I only like to bet on the top 3 in these types of event. Backed Gomez at 2.3, layed J Brownlee at 1.29, A Brownlee at 1.14. Hoping to green the bets at at some stage later in the race, so I can support the Brits.

Well I cant admit to knowing anything about this event, but my thinking was that if you get a breakaway group then either they go on to win (as with Men's road race) or they get caught and end up well down the field. So any individual has to make a hard choice whether to stay with the pack or join the lead group. Since we have the luxury of 2 top racers then better to hedge our bets and cover both eventualities.

You say that but Jonny had nothing to race for at the end as he knew he only had 3rd, but without the time penalty he'd have had a right good go for silver

Brilliant, looked a bit tired after the cycling but never let up in the running. Big gaps right down the field. What a man. Jonnie might have got silver if he'd taken the penalty end of lap 2 before he lost ground to Gomez. Never mind, great race and two medals.

the bloob - without the penalty the race for silver would have been a cracker
15 seconds stopping and you have to slow down and get going again, plus not running against anyone... impossible to say but irrelevant as he got the penalty and picked up bronze
bronze/silver... no big difference!

Pounf 07 Aug 12 13:26 They cant object to him grabbing a flag before the finish can they ?
Exactly what i thought at the time, i was like no don't do that, there's probably some busy official (most likely French) who won't like that.

I wonder how he would fare if he trained specifically for the 5,000m and 10,000m. Mo Farah won the 10,000m in a time which was about 1min 30sec quicker than what Brownlee just ran but he of course didn't have to swim 1.5km and ride a bike for 40km beforehand.
