Should he be thrown out like the badminton players were? Started the 800 m race, but clearly didn't try his best, so he could save his energy for the 1500 m final.

he didn't even want to start but was forced to or he would have had to forfeit his place in the 1500m final

why the feck not let him just drop out and not have to go through athlete registration , warm up/down, travel and all the rest

jobsworth kunnts

ennis was entered for the 100m hurdles today but she was allowed to withdraw

1406:
ATHLETICS - Algerian runner thrown out
Drama in the athletics heats this morning where Algerian 1500m medal contender Taoufik Makhloufi has been thrown out of the Olympics for not trying in his 800 heat.

Makhloufi, who won his 1500m semi-final in style, had been forced to run in the two lap race after his team failed to withdraw him from it by Sunday's deadline.

The 24-year-old lined up at the start of heat five but was already well behind the field at the start of the back straight before stopping running completely another 100m into the race and wandering back across the infield past the pole vault area.

"The referee considered that he had not provided a bona fide effort and decided to exclude him from participation in all further events in the competition," read an IAAF statement.

Isn't the obvious problem here the scheduling ? Whose idea was it to start the 800m competition before the 1500m finished ?
Report caramba August 6, 2012 2:45 PM BST
Cry

laid him after the 800 hoping for a dq, then redded out when I assumed that wouldn't happen. only small money, but slightly annoying that I didn't go with my initial instincts.

still a possibility that he protests and gets to run 1500 after all?

as far as the decision goes at least it's consistent with the badminton ruling, but they're both joke decisions imo.
Report posy August 6, 2012 2:47 PM BST
just layed him to place at 6.4 and 8.8.....hope he doesn't get reinstated

Apparently the Algerian Fed failed to withdraw him by the scheduled time, who's faults that.
Report NonShy.. August 6, 2012 2:57 PM BST
why didn't he just false start??????
Report caramba August 6, 2012 2:58 PM BST
From skysports article: "An IAAF spokeswoman said he could only be reinstated for Tuesday's 1,500m final if he gets a medical certificate from a local doctor."
Report NonShy.. August 6, 2012 3:08 PM BST
that won't be too hard... "i felt sick and had a headache ... thought i was going to pass out"

Report caramba August 6, 2012 3:52 PM BST

He joined today and it's his first ever post
Report caramba August 6, 2012 3:55 PM BST
if he wins, he should dedicate the victory to all his doctors.
Report Poppydog. August 6, 2012 3:57 PM BST
.... and chemists?
Report GoBallistic August 6, 2012 3:59 PM BST
In the cycling 250 kilometre road race the French selected Bourgain a track sprinter more used to doing 250 metres as one of their four man team (track riders need to do more than one event). He barely got out of London city centre before climbing off. As far as I know he hasn't been DQed from the keirin ... so what's the difference ?
Report soccerpro August 6, 2012 4:00 PM BST

I think he will make a bona fide effort at faking an injury and get a doctor's certificate for it.
Report KIMBLE August 6, 2012 4:20 PM BST
they basically told him 'get a doc cert and we'll let u back in',

works out for everyone

(apart from the guy that laid him to place at 9 of course)
Report tobermory August 6, 2012 4:29 PM BST
Yes GB the scheduling is bizarre. Not as if it is not possible to have the events spaced out, as this is how it used to be done in the 80s.

The 800M was one of the 1st events completed in track & field , think the heats on Day 2 and the final Day 4 .They would then get 2 full days off IIRC before the 1500 heats ,with the Final on the last day of the games.

That seemed to work perfectly well.
Report CLYDEBANK29 August 6, 2012 6:20 PM BST
Funnily enough he was carried off the track after the 1500m semi final.  I'm guessing that and the strapping was all part of the ploy.

Probably the same in all Olympics but there have been easy chances to make a few quid just by knowing the rules.A few I have seen this time round.

The rower holding up his seat ,re-run if it's in the first 100m.
Bloke fell off his bike in the points race yesterday ,he has 5 laps to get back in the race .He went on to win gold in the Omnium.
I watched the canoe slalem single the other day.The athletics commentator was on and when the fav missed a gate on his first run (50 sec penalty) the commentator said " the whole country will be in mourning " .Turned out it was the best run  out of two which counted and he qualified fastest in his 2nd run.You would hope the commentators would know the rules.

I'm sure there have been plenty more.

Biogirl - you are very welcome. I have a lovely green book and am winning 300 on Mahkloufi who I think will finish ahead of Kiprop. Not 100% sure that either will win though - the Kiwi looks ok.
