Sometimes it can seem like the cheaters at Olympic level sports are a step ahead of the drug testers. But at the London Olympics, it sure looks like the testers have stepped up their game.
Four more doping athletes were caught Saturday after drug tests turned up positive.
First came the early announcement of two athletes getting kicked out. Russian cyclist Victoria Baranova, 22, a bronze medalist in the sprint at the European championships, was expelled after testosterone was found in her system during a July 24 test. Now, she's riding her bike out of London, so to speak.
Also, Colombian 400-meter runner Diego Palomeque has been provisionally suspended for a July 26 positive test for testosterone. Basically what that means is he's not officially gone until his backup "B" sample tests positive as well.
Then at mid-day, word came down that two more athletes were getting the heave-ho. Belarus hammer thrower Ivan Tsikhan and Morocco middle-distance runner Amine Laalou both were suspended for doping offenses. Tsikhan failed a retest of his 2004 sample at the Athens Games, when he won a silver medal. So he'll likely lose that, too.
So now we're up to six athletes getting sent home for drugs. Earlier, Uzbekistan gymnast Luiza Galiulina and Albanian weightlifter Hysen Pulaku were expelled for failing pre-Games tests.
"We have shown that we take swift action, that cheats are caught and ejected from these Games," IOC spokesman Mark Adams
