That sir, is one of the best quotes i've seen on this forum and just about sums up what the general consensus is on English people.

I've watched sports in many countries and everywhere is the same, a bias towards that particular country. I found Australia and the US to be so biased you would not think there were any other nations competing. That said, the BBC coverage has been extensive, something for everyone.

I'm amazed the swimming comms have a job - constant giggling between each other and very little insight given.

On the flip side Boardman's massive amount of detailed knowledge really comes through and enhances the coverage.

I thought Mo was incredible but Rupp's performance deserved more from the Beeb.

MJ touched on it but the others in the studio weren't interested and just called him Mo's training partner about 10 times. For Rupp to beat the Africans was astounding.

He's one of only 3 non Africans to have broken 27 minutes. Chris Solinsky (USA) and Mo being the other 2.

As for Lewis and 'boy oh boy' Jackson, it's not really their fault for being so bland. Broadcasters are obsessed with employing big names to summarise and few can do it well.

Swimming commentators were awful,Brendan Foster has always been awful.
The problem we have with the Olympics is we dont have enough proper commentators so we end up using ex competitors who dont know how to commentate,so basically they end up cheering on the brits and not doing what they should be doing.They are better when their is no brit in a race,but when their is one....bloody awful!
My son lives in the USA and he says that the Yanks are even worse than us!! So it aint just us.

the cycling comm was so bad during the mens road race, he must have said a hundred times how well team gb were controlling the race, think he noticed with a mile to go that they werent going to get a medal

well they controlled those behind them,trouble was they did not control those ahead of them!

Yes Hugh Porter should have been put out to pasture years ago but to be fair to him, the Omnium, while great to watch, can be difficult to work out quickly standings amongst cyclists.

Also live in Ireland would expect commentary to be home town,why not?Agree that coverage is extensive.All round very good job by the BBC.

The road race comm was so bad because they had no stats of which riders were where and what times they were doing (i don't know if other countries had the same) so they were guessing a fair bit - prob not the beebs fault. I've been watching the bbc channels from 550 (on virgin 450 on sky) with the sound down and music on for most of it but most people don't even seem aware these are available!

Watched the film of the commentators filmed from behind during the 10000 metres final, didn't notice any jingoism there! Can't quite get my head around why Michael Johnson gets quite so excited for us though! Jingoism aside i think the coverage has been marvellous, proud to be British this morning, great stuff imo.

I think BBC coverage has offered lots of choice, esp. if you have sky or internet access to all of the up to 24 channels, which has allowed sight of channels that we don't normally see other than for 20 seconds.  BBC1 has some good features and interviews if the interviewer is competent and understanding - the piece with the women rowers this morning was an example of this.  The slushy bits with soppy music do nothing for me though - there is more than enough emotion in the sport itself.  The BBC also persists with so-called iconic commentators for far too long, Hugh Porter and Brendan Foster being a couple of examples in the same way that they persist with Alliss in the golf.  On the other hand, Barry Davies, who is also knocking on a bit, continues to be excellent on the hockey.  It is difficult for me to compare coverage with other countries because of commentaries generally being in languages I don't understand, but I was in the US for parts of the 1996 and 2008 Olympics and it was massively more jingoistic than the BBC, and there are adverts all of the time. There was also literally no coverage of anything where Americans were not involved.  I remember seeing a diving final where I think the Yank was 2nd or 3rd and they cut away to an advert after his dive when the Chinese diver in gold medal position was about to take his final dive - this may sound normal to some people but as a sports fan I found this offensive.  I was also in Seoul for the 2002 World Cup where the Koreans took down the big screens in the city centre after the 3rd place play-off and BEFORE the final.  The screens had been there throughout the tournament but they decided that once the home team was out, there was no interest - all in all I'll take the BBC every time.

I've found the BBC internet coverage is far too concentrated on the live streaming coverage. It's actually pretty difficult to find out what's already happened in the slightly lower profile events.

I don't quite understand why the BBC needs to hire so many foreigners at great expense to tell us how wonderful we are.

That Big Ben medal counter looks like a church roof fund and sticking the faces on those giant medals is a waste of time, more worthy of Jeux sans Frontiers than the Olympics.
