The sheer notion of a 'target' of medals is patently illogical. The 'target' could be a notional 30 medals, 100 medals or a thousand. It's based on the assumed improvement in GB's performances without taking into account the improvement or otherwise of other countries. Complete nonsense.

Sure what am I on about........Chinese athletes are improving 7 seconds over the course of a month ![]() They must have REALLY good science those Chinese |

For example Mo Farah lives in an oxygen tent to continually replicate training at altitude. How is the average Joe supposed to compete with that? He can't. Is that cheating?

targets are not illogical at all and I can tell you have never competed at any sport at a decent level. The management have looked at all the sports and the athletes they have and made estimates of what it will take to win medals in those events. These targets are not pie in the sky either because there have been World, European and other championships in the Olympic cycle plus experience in previous Olympics to go by It would be illogical not to set targets and in fact goal setting is one of the key attributes of successful people in many walks of life The illogical approach would be the 'suck it and see' approach you seem to favout |

^ agree with all of that but struggle with downgrading the target a few days into the event - tantamount to a premature admission of failure.
Personally think it's too early to make a judgment - swim team (which is more a collective of individuals than a true team anyway) has been diappointing to date but that could completely turn around in one race tomorrow night. It's clear that being at home is n't necessarily always an advantage - world no.1 in canoe slalom would not be used to that level of attention - some of the hype is not helpful either, Zoe Smith got a ludicrous amount of air time yday/last night for finishing 12th in weightlifting. |
|
By:
It is way too early to be downgrading targets. Athletics hasn't started, track cycling hasn't started, rowing and boxing are still in the heats stages, sailing still in early stages, haven't had the triathlon, only a third of the equestrian to go. Plus as soon as we get some more sedate sports in like darts, snooker, bridge, golf in all the better.

Darts lol. Not a recognised sport.

The advantage of home soil is outweighed by the pressure to perform on home soil,

The downgrade in the target will be in response to a few missed chances even if they were marginal. At this stage the estimation may have been for 3, 4 or even 5 more medals than they currently have. For instance:
Daley & Waterfield: considered a near certainty for a podium I would have thought, and indeed one missed dive did cost them Individual 3-day event: reckon they would have been bankering on a medal here; Tina Cook had the medal and needed to simply clear the final round to get it - messed it up Swimming pool: various chances with Tancock, Spofforth, Miley and a few others - probably hopeful of more than a single bronze so far David Florence: Silver in Beijing, probably expecting to be on podium at least - did not make final Cycling road race: probably expecting 1 medal which they got but also chances for multiple medals Only surprise extra medal so far is the Team bronze in gymnastics So, I think they are probably 4 medals short of expectations (1 diving, 1 swimming, 1 equestrian, 1 canoe, 1 cycling) minus 1 gymnastics And that's the reason for the lower estimates |
|
By:
Daley + Waterfield were 3+ for a medal I think, none of those swimmers had a more than an outside shot at a medal and I didn't see the odds but I doubt Florence was shorter than 3 for a medal. So whilst there have been chances and you'd expect to have picked up a couple more were not that far behind
|
|
By:
when Daley was leading after 3 dives, out of 6, they would have been long odds on for a medal, pretty much only had to hit their last 3
But also, there has only been one 'surprise' performance bonus medal which is disappointing. In another universe there is Team GB where all the possibles got their medals and several surprise bonus medals came in too Ellen Gandy was a world silver medallist and she didn't even make her final, Tancock and Spofforth both missed bronzes by 0.4 seconds and finished 5th - half a second quicker adds 2 medals and both have swum those times in the past Tina Cook phucked up, Mary King too We are a good few shorter of what was achievable at this stage minimum 3, easily 5 if everything went well (womens 4 x 100m relay rested Halsall and failed to make the final - and they have swam the race faster than the bronze medals winners did) |

form in swimming seems to fluctuate wildly from one year to the next. just because someone won a medal at the world championships last year is little indication that the same will happen the following year. and of course you get teenagers suddenly appearing on the scene out of nowehere which doesn't really happen in many other sports.
|

I have to declare that I have watched wall to wall Olympics from the start, including all the catch ups, the satellite channels, all the round ups and pretty much been glued to it morning to night
still watching now in fact |

For phucks sake!!!!!!!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() they have phucking well known this was coming and they were supposed to turn up and produced the performances of their lives it's not phucking good enough to say "performances fluctuate" - you have to plan your life around those dates and turn up ready to do your best. Many have simply under performed |
|
By:
every olympic games i can remember we get told we have a load of live medals chances in the pool and time and time again they fail to materialise. just saying world championship performance is little indication of success when it comes to the olympics.
take out adlington who is clearly a phenomenal talent and what did we win in beijing ? just jackson's bronze in the same race iirc |
|
By:
Swimming in 2008 we won two gold (Becky Adlington), two silver (both open water) and two bronze (one in the pool Jo Jackson and one in the open water). So far, Becky Adlington has one bronze, and we got two of the leading times in the semi-final breaststroke today.
It amazes me people are trying to analyse our total performance already when so little has gone. |
|
By:
yep i think we had 2 gold and 2 others after 4 days in beijing. it would have been a minor miracle if we had won 2 golds in the first 4 days again
the next few days should tell us a lot with the rowing finals, cycling with wiggins and the track starting on thursday and ennis and farah on saturday. if we don't have a shedload of golds after that then people can start pointing fingers. the media haven't had much success to talk about so far so they've had to fill their air time/pages with drivel and rubbish |
|
By:
The media also wrote the story of Cav's great crowning before they got to the startline on Saturday. He lost and they started to panic from the off. At least the Mirror have gone with a great front page tomorrow. That said, if Wiggo loses, we'll be in more trouble from the papers.

"Tina Cook phucked up, Mary King too"
Ever considered their horses might have been knackered after the exertions of the previous rounds ? Zara Phillips phucked up (and she said as much) in the penultimate round which cost GB a Gold in the team comp. Tina Cook & Mary King didn't which is why Britain got Silver. Incidentally Zara went clear in the last round when it didn't really matter. What would have Tina & Mary paid for that round ? As always small margins make a huge difference. |

i'm not from GB, in fact.. I hate GB but it's obvious to me you guys will win a few medals today/tomorrow whatever time it is
you got a few big chances in the rowing & swimming |

as well as the cycling

There were f*ck ups galore in the jumping sections of the equestrian. It wasn't just a GB problem. Great viewing and suspense right down to the final seconds.

Really enjoyed the eventing, I was glued to the showjumping yesterday, very exciting stuff.
It's unfortunate that horses don't give a sh*t about winning medals, otherwise they might try that little bit harder I thought our horses and riders did brilliantly to win us a Silver. I was thrilled with that result. |
|
By:
its not how many you have won over the 1st 4 days, its how many you have won at the end, that will decide, if this has been a very good/good/average/poor olympics for GB. The crowds help, buts its how you perform at your event that wins the medals.
