Its been dreadful campaign so far. I wouldve expected a  home nation , a sporting nation, a nation that has had over 7 yrs to prepare for the home Olympics to have won atleat 3 - 4 gold medals at this stage of the games. We are a very supportive nation and we even celebrate the non medal winners as if they are heroes and have made the nation proud.

I personaly think the olympics is far from clean . I personaly think there are many atheletes from many nations doping. Already several atheletes are being caught on a daily basis and reports of them being published on bbc website. Look at the Chinese 16-year-old who swam faster than Ryan Lochte, how can this be??? a small female swimmers swims faster than one of the fastest male swimmers in the world. There is no logic to this.

They say they are testing more atheltes than ever in these games, i hope they stand by that , and test every single athelete, particulary the medal winners. Some may think im too paranoid , and looknig for an excuse to explain the GB poor results. Possibly. But i just reckone their are alot of cheaters in these games, that are using latest drugs & methods that are difficult to detect.

I hope they test every single athlete after every single race (name & shame them), particularly in the physical events which PED have the most dramatic effect on.

We aren't doing well, I'll agree. I don't know if we're doing poorly though. Some of it is expectations and that's because we're the home nation and secondly because we did so well in Beijing. It's unfair to judge so far though with few medals given out but only at the end of the games. For example look at Canada in Vancouver. One gold and they got the proverbial avalanche after that.

certain individuals have failed at the crucial moments (Tom Daley/Pete Waterfield, Tina Cook, David Florence) and several others simply were never good enough anyway

I think the preparation across the board has been compromised. Many have been doing more and more media appearances and taking part in the promotion of the events themselves which can't be good for peak performance. The track cycling will give us a good clue. They were perfectly prepared in Beijing and dominated. This time the likes of Hoy and Pendleton have been doing TV shows, commercials and public appearances to promote the games. Their results will indicate a lot.

Also, don't forget there was a significant cut in funding following the election in 2010.

Doesn't help with the BBC hyping up any slight hope as being a medal chance.

They should use the markets to set realistic expectations but I guess saying so and so only has a 5-10% chance of a medal doesn't make for good TV Grin

If you list the odds we list at that sort if losing run happens all the time at horse racing, and we know it just chance. In any case, what's been so terrible? An excellent silver in cycling we didn't expect, silver in equestrian is consistent with the staring odds. Cavendish didn't perform below par, just turned out a breakaway worked out. It happens. Adlington was never a realistic gold prospect and she didn't under perform. Our gymnasts are performing well above what was expected, as are our rowers and boxers. I really don't feel were cracking under the pressure, and thinking 3-4 golds already is astoundingly optimistic I think!
Report pumpkinslayertoo July 31, 2012 8:00 PM BST
And I don't think Daley for example failed at crucial moments. People don't understand diving. The last 3 dives are everything. And the reason they started at 20-1+ became evident. They were backed down to 3-1 which was insane, and just shows what happens when people bet on something they have never bet on before and don't understand.

Daley phucked one dive completely (reverse 3.5 somersault) that they have nailed repeatedly in competitions including recently, no one was expecting a gold medal, not even Daley if they had nailed everything

however that one dive made the difference between a silver and 4th place. They only scored 71 points and would have scored 90+ for a good dive...

whatever reason you want to propose, they simply did not deliver the required level of performance at the key moment

neither did David Florence

and Tina Cook needed a clear round to get an individual medal in the 3 Day Event and phucked it

several people have failed to deliver when it matters, even Ben Ainslie is in seriously trouble

Just watching some GB swimmers pummelling their lifetime bests - you can't really ask for more.  Adlington's bronze came in a faster time than her Beijing gold, Ainslie is being beaten by a Dane who apparently wasn't even on the radar, Florence & Daley/Waterfield made one absolute howler each.  I was amazed when we finished 4th in the medal table at Beijing and would have been quite surprised if we had repeated that.

There are also positives away from gold-medal fever, such as the Men's gymnastics bronze in a sport that was quite honestly dead in this country just 10 years ago.

I'm not sure about that.  GB is not a strong Olympic nation.  We have had single-figure gold medal tallies throughout the last century culminating in a feeble one gold (Redgrave & Pinsent) at Atlanta 1996.  It's only since the turn of the century that this score has climbed - 11 in 2000, 9 in 2004 and then a huge jump to 19 in Beijing.  Our 'quantum leap' has already occurred last time and to expect another repeat, home advantage or not, looks pretty unrealistic to me.

targets are not illogical at all and I can tell you have never competed at any sport at a decent level. The management have looked at all the sports and the athletes they have and made estimates of what it will take to win medals in those events. These targets are not pie in the sky either because there have been World, European and other championships in the Olympic cycle plus experience in previous Olympics to go by

It would be illogical not to set targets and in fact goal setting is one of the key attributes of successful people in many walks of life

The illogical approach would be the 'suck it and see' approach you seem to favout

^ agree with all of that but struggle with downgrading the target a few days into the event - tantamount to a premature admission of failure.

Personally think it's too early to make a judgment - swim team (which is more a collective of individuals than a true team anyway) has been diappointing to date but that could completely turn around in one race tomorrow night.

It's clear that being at home is n't necessarily always an advantage - world no.1 in canoe slalom would not be used to that level of attention - some of the hype is not helpful either, Zoe Smith got a ludicrous amount of air time yday/last night for finishing 12th in weightlifting.
Report Darlo Bantam July 31, 2012 11:43 PM BST
It is way too early to be downgrading targets. Athletics hasn't started, track cycling hasn't started, rowing and boxing are still in the heats stages, sailing still in early stages, haven't had the triathlon, only a third of the equestrian to go. Plus as soon as we get some more sedate sports in like darts, snooker, bridge, golf in all the better.

The advantage of home soil is outweighed by the pressure to perform on home soil,
Report judorick August 1, 2012 12:19 AM BST
The downgrade in the target will be in response to a few missed chances even if they were marginal. At this stage the estimation may have been for 3, 4 or even 5 more medals than they currently have. For instance:

Daley & Waterfield: considered a near certainty for a podium I would have thought, and indeed one missed dive did cost them

Individual 3-day event: reckon they would have been bankering on a medal here; Tina Cook had the medal and needed to simply clear the final round to get it - messed it up

Swimming pool: various chances with Tancock, Spofforth, Miley and a few others - probably hopeful of more than a single bronze so far

David Florence: Silver in Beijing, probably expecting to be on podium at least - did not make final

Cycling road race: probably expecting 1 medal which they got but also chances for multiple medals

Only surprise extra medal so far is the Team bronze in gymnastics

So, I think they are probably 4 medals short of expectations (1 diving, 1 swimming, 1 equestrian, 1 canoe, 1 cycling) minus 1 gymnastics

And that's the reason for the lower estimates
Report DonNo1 August 1, 2012 12:28 AM BST
Daley + Waterfield were 3+ for a medal I think, none of those swimmers had a more than an outside shot at a medal and I didn't see the odds but I doubt Florence was shorter than 3 for a medal.  So whilst there have been chances and you'd expect to have picked up a couple more were not that far behind
Report judorick August 1, 2012 12:40 AM BST
when Daley was leading after 3 dives, out of 6, they would have been long odds on for a medal, pretty much only had to hit their last 3

But also, there has only been one 'surprise' performance bonus medal which is disappointing. In another universe there is Team GB where all the possibles got their medals and several surprise bonus medals came in too

Ellen Gandy was a world silver medallist and she didn't even make her final, Tancock and Spofforth both missed bronzes by 0.4 seconds and finished 5th - half a second quicker adds 2 medals and both have swum those times in the past

Tina Cook phucked up, Mary King too

We are a good few shorter of what was achievable at this stage minimum 3, easily 5 if everything went well (womens 4 x 100m relay rested Halsall and failed to make the final - and they have swam the race faster than the bronze medals winners did)
