We aren't doing well, I'll agree. I don't know if we're doing poorly though. Some of it is expectations and that's because we're the home nation and secondly because we did so well in Beijing. It's unfair to judge so far though with few medals given out but only at the end of the games. For example look at Canada in Vancouver. One gold and they got the proverbial avalanche after that.

I dont think we are doing particularly poorly at all. Only had 3 medals after 3 days in Beijing.
|
|
By:
the next 4 days should be extremely strong. could be getting on for double figures by saturday night
|

By:
certain individuals have failed at the crucial moments (Tom Daley/Pete Waterfield, Tina Cook, David Florence) and several others simply were never good enough anyway
I think the preparation across the board has been compromised. Many have been doing more and more media appearances and taking part in the promotion of the events themselves which can't be good for peak performance. The track cycling will give us a good clue. They were perfectly prepared in Beijing and dominated. This time the likes of Hoy and Pendleton have been doing TV shows, commercials and public appearances to promote the games. Their results will indicate a lot. Also, don't forget there was a significant cut in funding following the election in 2010. |

Should be double figures in gold by Sunday

that's what i meant

why are we getting excited over sliver and bronze medals no one remembers losers. come on gb go for gold.

Doesn't help with the BBC hyping up any slight hope as being a medal chance.
They should use the markets to set realistic expectations but I guess saying so and so only has a 5-10% chance of a medal doesn't make for good TV ![]() |

the way its going it will cost us 1 billion a gold medal

If you list the odds we list at that sort if losing run happens all the time at horse racing, and we know it just chance. In any case, what's been so terrible? An excellent silver in cycling we didn't expect, silver in equestrian is consistent with the staring odds. Cavendish didn't perform below par, just turned out a breakaway worked out. It happens. Adlington was never a realistic gold prospect and she didn't under perform. Our gymnasts are performing well above what was expected, as are our rowers and boxers. I really don't feel were cracking under the pressure, and thinking 3-4 golds already is astoundingly optimistic I think!
|
|
By:
And I don't think Daley for example failed at crucial moments. People don't understand diving. The last 3 dives are everything. And the reason they started at 20-1+ became evident. They were backed down to 3-1 which was insane, and just shows what happens when people bet on something they have never bet on before and don't understand.
|
|
By:
have we got a chance to win a gold in athletics.?
|
|
By:
cavendish was the only big gold chance from the first 4 days
farah is favourite for the 5000 and 10000 and ennis for the heptathlon. 4 or 5 live outside chances too. |
|
By:
Daley phucked one dive completely (reverse 3.5 somersault) that they have nailed repeatedly in competitions including recently, no one was expecting a gold medal, not even Daley if they had nailed everything
however that one dive made the difference between a silver and 4th place. They only scored 71 points and would have scored 90+ for a good dive... whatever reason you want to propose, they simply did not deliver the required level of performance at the key moment neither did David Florence and Tina Cook needed a clear round to get an individual medal in the 3 Day Event and phucked it several people have failed to deliver when it matters, even Ben Ainslie is in seriously trouble |

ok thanks just looked at odds GB to get 20 gold medals 1.4 looks like a good lay. seems like it will be difficult to get it.
|

Where can you lay GB to get 20 gold medals at 1.4?
|

sorry its 19 or under at 1.4 on here.

Just watching some GB swimmers pummelling their lifetime bests - you can't really ask for more. Adlington's bronze came in a faster time than her Beijing gold, Ainslie is being beaten by a Dane who apparently wasn't even on the radar, Florence & Daley/Waterfield made one absolute howler each. I was amazed when we finished 4th in the medal table at Beijing and would have been quite surprised if we had repeated that.
There are also positives away from gold-medal fever, such as the Men's gymnastics bronze in a sport that was quite honestly dead in this country just 10 years ago. |

By:
but every other host nation has had their best ever Olympics when they were host
it will be a major phuck up if we don't smash all previous records on home soil |
|
By:
it will be seen an absolute disaster if we don't finish 4th in the table and i expect the BOA are probably hoping for 3rd

it will be a major phuck up if we don't smash all previous records on home soil
I'm not sure about that. GB is not a strong Olympic nation. We have had single-figure gold medal tallies throughout the last century culminating in a feeble one gold (Redgrave & Pinsent) at Atlanta 1996. It's only since the turn of the century that this score has climbed - 11 in 2000, 9 in 2004 and then a huge jump to 19 in Beijing. Our 'quantum leap' has already occurred last time and to expect another repeat, home advantage or not, looks pretty unrealistic to me. |
|
By:
there about 200 more gb athletes competing this time compared to beijing
we must, and the BOA expects, to get many more than the 48 medals we got in Beijing - 65 is the target I believe |
|
By:
By coincidence I've just come across the UK Sport medal target. Here it is:
London 2012 medal target range: Cycling: Beijing (14 medals). London target range: 6-10. Sailing: Beijing (6). London target range: 3-5. Rowing: Beijing (6). London target: 6. Swimming: Beijing (6). London target range: 5-7. Athletics - Beijing (4). London target range: 5-8. Canoe/Kayak: Beijing (3). London target range: 3-4. Boxing: Beijing (3). London target range: 3-5. Equestrian: Beijing (2). London target range: 3-4. Modern Pentathlon: Beijing (1). London target range: 1-2. Gymnastics: Beijing (1). London target range: 1-2. Taekwondo: Beijing (1). London target range: 1-3. Triathlon: Beijing (0). London target range: 1-2. Hockey: Beijing (0). London target range: 1-2. Diving: Beijing (0). London target range: 1-3. |

Ireland look good for two gold. \o/
Annalise Murphy in sailing opens with four wins from four races. Katie Taylor in boxing is favourite. |
|
By:
48 was to manage expectations and not put too much pressure on themselves but privately the top brass expect a lot more
|
|
By:
There is no logic to this.
The Olympics imho are a ridiculous farce. If anyone opens their eyes they will see it is soaked in drugs and cheating. Swimming records now up to 30 seconds faster than records being set By East Germans in the 80s. Olympics after Olympics, records are beaten (Easily) Sadly Humans dont evolve that fast.... ![]() |

former investment bank goldman sucks used one of their famous "models" to come up with this estimation of Gold Medal distribution
US 37 China 33 UK 30 http://www.scribd.com/fullscreen/100979593?access_key=key-170hnj5cf3mbup6yhmui UK hasn't been top 3 in anything for 100 years now (world was on a gold standard back then), so where does all that come from ? 8 gold sounds good to me. that way you could tie the Chinese Diving team !! |

Infostrada estimated that GB would win 64 medals
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/18787235 His company predicts 64 medals and 19 golds for GB, "enough for fourth place". Infostrada has a long history of making fairly accurate predictions http://www.infostradasports.com/download/brochures/virtualmedaltable.pdf Be in no doubt, once London was awarded the games in 2005, Beijing 2008 was a staging post along the way to a massive medal haul in 2012 and if they only get 48 medals it will be failure |
