i'm guessing it's because it needs to be dark or very close to dark. visual effects not much good in the daylight. pretty sure it's normally earlier than this

If it was a soccer game you were interested in,bet you would stay up to watch it.
Pretty special having the Olympics in your back yard, guessing your Uk,a once in lifetime experience unless your a yank.Just enjoy it. |

Think it must be because they do need the darkness for it to work. Loads of children will be watching, it's a Friday night, schools are on holidays. Have you ever thought of adapting your daily routine?
By:
If it was sporting competition, of course I would stay up and watch but I am just pointing out that most of the population are normally asleep at that time of night so why have they put it on so late?. Will there be any transport running for the spectators to get home afterwards-I doubt it. Many events start at 9 tomorrow so none of the athletes competing in those will be there unless they are willing to stay up until 2am.

Transport is available for spectators afterwards. The 'show' part of the ceremony is 9-10.30. That's fine for kids on a friday night. After that it's just the teams parading which won't be particularly exciting imo. A few athletes who are competing tomorrow morning will miss it but it's a tiny percentage. As has been pointed on here they needed to wait until it's dark.
By:
people competing over the first weekend of the games never march at the opening ceremony. it involves hours of standing around waiting and then getting to bed in the early hours
By:
So are you saying that the athletes won't even be in the stadium to see it! Even more pointless than I thought. The only people who love it are the politicians, bureaucrats and sponsors who have never competed in their life but want to be in the spotlight. The sport is irrelevant to those people. It is certainly not a small percentage of athletes that won't be there. Many of the contenders for the flag carrier were ruled out because their sporting schedule meant they won't be there.
By:
only around 50% of the british team will march - all the athletics team are in portugal, a lot of the swimmers and rowers for example will be competing over the weekend and they certainly won't be there. i guess all the major countries will have similar % attending.
tbh the organisers are not unhappy about this. in the modern world with everyone having smartphones and the obsession of having to take photos of everything these parades have got longer and longer. we'd be here all night if all 10000+ attended. |
