See my Rowing Preview
I think anyone who gives it the big one on here about 'cannot lose...will give up if this doesn't oblige....free money' etc is an ego-tripping imbecile - just look at thes 'Horseracingexpert' gadjie for a prime example. However, The New Zealand Men's Pair in the rowing are rightly the hottest favourites in the rowing events. They have dominated this event for the last 4 years. They were challenged by the GB pair of Read and Triggs-Hodge last year and they beat them every time they raced - sometimes by not very much, but the Kiwi's still won. So much so, the GB pair have now relocated back to being half the GB Men's Four. So basically, NZ have already seen off their closest rivals for gold before a blade is even sunk in the water. |

I really fancy Blake to win men's 100m gold. Can't see Bolt beating him

Javier Culson at evens looks a corker of a bet to me.
Mens 400m hurdles. |

What about Ken Bekele in the 10000 metres? Surely 5-1 for gold represents excellent value providing he's fit. Which looks the case having run the third fastest time in the world recently to win in Birmingham. Thoughts anyone?
By:
Bekele's cracking value. He's struggled with injury the last few years but he's the greatest 10000m runner the world's ever seen and has never lost when he's finished the race. The Farah effect is getting slightly blown out of proportion. He is rightly favourite for both the 5 and 10k but it's by no means a foregone conclusion. Gebremeskal easily beat Farah over 3000m despite losing a shoe in the first 50m of the race and this year became the 5th fastest 5k runner of ALL time by running 12:46. Galen Rupp is also a cracking bet for a medal in the 10k. He's Mo Farah's training partner and has been getting better and better. It'll be a surprise if he medals but his odds will be juicy.
The biggest cert is David Rudisha. A serene athlete with no one even close to him for the last two years. The other athletes are running for silver. |
By:
Rudisha is 1/8! I havent seen a lot of him but he must be a machine!
By:
Machine is a good description. He's a phenomenon. The only way he gets beat is if he loses a leg before the final.

Stevodevo where is Bekele 5/1 for 10k, as short as 7/4 3s general, if he is fit he wins.
By:
Stevo1, he's 5.1 on betfair for 10k gold medal currently.
Granpachook, I think yours is a pretty good analysis. I too think Mo is a bit over-hyped. Having said that, he's a great runner, just yet to see him run a last lap like Bekele does. I'm a big Bekele fan and if he's fully fit he will be hard to beat. As for David Rudisha... agreed, he's a freak and should surely win. Cheers, interesting to hear your thoughts on Galen Rupp too btw. |
By:
What about H2h gold medal betting? GB to beat Russia paying around 2.65, China to beat USA at around 2.35
By:
Mo is a fantastic runner and rightly favourite for both events as I said. But I think the media are expecting him to just be able to turn up and win both events. Not a chance. He may well win both and it would be great if he does but to dismiss the likes of Bekele and Gebremeskal as also-rans is ludicrous. That's without evening mentioning the likes of Lagat who, if ready, probably has the best kick of anyone in the 5k. Incidentally, Rupp outkicked Lagat in the USA 5k trials so for his price to be as high as it is is madness. Get on Rupp for the 10k and you'll be able to trade out in-running very easily when the market wakes up and he's still in contention with 1200m to go. Just because he's not East African people think he has no chance but you don't run 26:48 for 10k without being an incredible runner.

Cheers Devo had some 5.1 then went 5.2 back to 4.9 now good luck with your selections.

A Brownlee was 5/4.... now 4/7.. triathlon - NAP I was told to back his brother, dont know the reason though. |
By:
The better brother (assume that was Alastair) was injured and I think not expected to compete. He was 3/1 with corals on their New Year Specials to win gold which I thought was the best New Year Special around. I remember thinking later that was a narrow escape.

I wouldnt take 1/2 on Adlington myself. Yes she's fave but that's hardly enticing odds and she's hardly the most consistent swimmer around. Some women's performances are affected by the time of the month and I believe she falls into this category.
By:
Addlington will bwin by seconds

By:
A Brownlee was injured... came back, still not 100% and won by over a minute.... should be fully fit now

aye assumed he must have shown himself to be back in great form again hence his price, just explaining why someone might have been tipped up to back his brother.

these are the best I've placed that am most confident about (all to win gold)
Mens Wrestling Freestyle 96kg A. Gadisov 3/1 Mens Wrestling Freestyle 74kg J. Burroughs Evens Mens Wrestling Freestyle 55kg R. Velikov 4/1 Rowing Womens Lightweight Double Sculls New Zealand 6/1 Canoeing Mens K2 200m Russia 13/2 Judo Mens +100kg Teddy Riner 8/15 Judo Womens +78kg Wen Tong 6/4 Most Golds Match Bet Italy vs Japan Japan 11/10 Medal Table Match Bet South Korea vs Japan Japan 11/10 Have to say that I think the two match bets on Japan are absolutely incredible value - apart from the very outdated Infostrada analysis (which WH and JC respectively have clearly used to price the market) everyone else has Japan well ahead of Korea and Italy |

The fave in the Mens 55Kg freestyle isnt even quoted

you can tell they are all just blindly copying each other. The correct Russian is Otarsultanov, not Lebedev and not Semenov
By:
yep, that's right, he beat Lebedev in the final of the Russian qualifying but Velikov is to my mind more consistant and represents very good value at 4/1

Why are people saying Kenenisa Bekele (Ethiopia) will beat Mohamed Farah (Great Britain) ????
![]() ![]() |
By:
Is Mo Farah better in the 5k or the 10k ?
By:
I'd say mebbe a tiny bit better at 5k, but the quality of opposition is definitely stronger in the 5k than the 10k
By:
ah found Otarsultanov...Hills and bwin put him in the betting for the 55kg Greco Rooamn wrestling instead

Blake at 2.9 has to be a great bet. Blake is peaking at the right time. Ran 9.75 in the trials and will go faster in the final, there is no way Bolt can match that with all the bad vibes surrounding him.
By:
how is Javier Culson odds against in the 400m. yes he has to prove he can win on the big stage but no one has got near him yet

Pamela Jelimo, Womens 800m
Looks back to somewhere near her best, shouldn't be odds against. Gebremeskel, Mens 5000m Hugely impressive in that amazing race in Paris. He ran 7 secs faster there than Mo has EVER run and should be a strong favourite. Mo makes a market. |

Anyone else not betting but just watching. Apart from the cycling, and I will bet on the road race, these are all sports I know little about, although watch enough Athletics but never had any inclination to bet on it.
The only angle I will find is both here, and with the mostly British bookies, some of Team GB will be over bet considerably. Now, I think I'll open a thread on potential short priced lays. I don't know any but there seems to be enough of you around here with opinions. |
