On the drift since I backed him, due to a fall in Poland. Broke a rib but still expecting to race!

Looks like he's used the Tour de Wallone to test his strength and fitness. I'm on and I can desert Peter Sagan either. Hats off to Team GB (mostly Sky) if they can dominate enough to set it up for Cavendish but not at about evens. |
By:
Complete novice here but is this a Team Event (like the Tour De France) or is it every man for himself.
If there is no team medals at stake, why try to set the race up for one guy, even if he is in your (national) team? |
By:
It works the same as a stage of the Tour in that the team (GB) will try and work the race to give their best hope (Cavendish) a shot at winning. Of course it may not pan out like that as Cav may not get up box hill 9 times and they may adjust plans on the fly + there is a very good chance of a break away at some stage which could complicate things.
By:
Is there a Team competition within the race too, like in, say, cross country running?
Seems soul-destroying for team members who aren't their top boy to have to go through all this without a chance for a medal. 'Scuse the ignorance. |

i am on boonen as well... big price and worth e/w flutter
By:
a few years back we had to import an italian to ride for us and couldnt fill our quota of team places
whats the gb team millar, froome, wiggins and cav ? any more millar may be sent to cover breakaways which could make him a decent outside bet |

tom boonen riding up box hill loop as we speak!

I have Boonen covered at 25s, but worthy of consideration is big Thor. My understanding is that he also skipped the Tour to concentrate on this race and it's exactly the kind of race that he does well at, as he is able to both climb and sprint adeptly. His price is a decent darts score, presumably because he is in the same 'team' as EBH, but I can't help but wonder why he has aimed his season at this race, if he is only there as a domestique. Worth a punt at the prices and even if he hits the front 400m out as part of EBHs leadout, only to disappear, you will be able to trade out for a freebie.

I like Fabian Cancellara a lot for this race. Course will suit his style. Will attack and will be very hard to pull back
By:
There's 50k to go after Box Hill, cant see it being anything other than a bunch sprint.
By:
Had a few quid on Boonen e/w.
By:
Boonen at 28.0 & Sagan at 9.0 my bets.
Feels like a Ronde style last 50km finish..and if Boonen hadn't cracked a Polski rib I would be a lot more confident. Cav obviously the man to beat..and the Aussies & Germans will join up with the "Superheroes of Team GB" to make it a 15 man effort to close the breaks down...but everyone else has to try and use MSR tactics or they might as well not bother. Some rain might make it really interesting... Did my conkers laying Bettini 8 years ago in Athens...so should know better than to play an unknown event on an unknown course.... |
By:
Should be a brilliant race but have big doubts about Cav. getting this one even with German and Aussie help.

Frankly don't know enough to post an opinion on who will win. However, the odds on Cavendish to be in the top three are a farce. Since at least 1972 there's only been one time the road race has approached any sort of bunch sprint. That was 2008 where the first two were Sami Sanchez and Cancellara who are hardly traditional sprinters.

By:
Andre Greipel for me.
By:
Sagan for me, very strong and can adjust to most race situations - can go it alone if need be.
By:
Gilbert may be a better bet for the Belguims?
By:
@ DHB
it all depends on the course layout, this one is on the easy (flat) side, so compare it with recent WCs on similar courses (in recent also with limited numbers of riders for each team) |

This race boils down to the form of Wiggins and Froome. If they are running on fumes (as perhaps they should be by now) then GB won't have the firepower to keep it all together and a late attack will succeed. Would love to see Vino get a medal in those circumstances.
Cavendish will be on top form. Expect to see him do better than expected on the climbs. Goss next best if it comes to a sprint as he comes into his own over extreme distances |
