Yeah, Darren, I got the feeling on here that the BBC is not universally adored in the UK. Though I also assume that fringers are probably heavily overrepresented on this forum and the general public, while they might not like the TV license and watch the BBC all that much, are not nearly as critical, and often abusive, towards the BBC as this forum could make one believe.

It's not so much the content or the politics side of things with the BBC, it really is mostly the tv tax, as each year goes by it stands out more and more because of where we are in technological progression, it's just very dated, if TV was starting today, you'd never introduce such a thing, which is why it's hanging on, think it will receive far less criticism the day it goes it's own way. Maybe not on here thought lol.

Thanks, Darren! My perspective is partly formed from a similar situation in Germany. With Das Erste (plus its regional subnetworks) and the ZDF we have to major BBC-like entities that are also financed through a monthly payment tv license thing (€17.50 per month per household). People aren't really keen on that either, especially if they feel that they watch those channels comparatively little. I feel like in the end, even if they might bemoan the costs, they often still appreciate the existence of the channels, or at least don't mind it all too much.
The heavy criticism and abuse, the kind you regularly see on here, mostly really comes from the fringes in Germany. Predominantly the weirdo conspiracy loving victimhood loon fringe of the right-wing. |
