At its peak the British Empire controlled 27% of the world, they achieved this by using its wealth, its armies and its navy to defeat rival European countries and to conquer local peoples to establish its empire. They also carried out many atrocitities like introducing concentration camps, Armristar massacre, Indian famine Mau Mau rising to name but a few, so are you ashamed to be British because of what happened in the past, or is history something that we learn from and should not be so judgemental about?

As a German I also know a thing or two about being from a country whose history isn't all Goethe and roses. In Germany it's not about being ashamed for being German or any nonsense like that. It's simply about having a sober view on the past. We don't scuff our feet, endlessly bemoaning how ashamed we are for our mere existence.
From what I've seen in the British media, and also this forum, I don't see it any different in the UK. To me it looks like simply about having a balanced view on history. Of course there are probably some people here and there who want you to be ashamed, but by and large it mostly seem to be social media grifters from the alt-right who push the narrative that the good patriotic Brit must stand up against the media and liberal nasty elite wanting to put you into an eternal state of shame when the liberals really don't. |

And this shame thing from the alt-right about Britishness/Germanness extends to other things. They spread a similar total nonsense narrative to their crowd about the liberals/leftists/whatever wanting you to be ashamed of being white. Or being a male. Or worst of all - a white male. The alt-righters implant a victimhood mentality regarding those things that then makes people put up stickers that say "It's ok to be white". Well, of course it's ok to be white. Of course it's ok to be male. Of course it's ok to be British, and to be a proud Brit. Ain't nobody of note telling you it isn't. It's just a really stupid narrative created by the alt-righters that the liberals want British white males to walk down the street in eternal shame, scuffing their feet, being heartbroken about their birth sin of having been born a white male Brit. |

Funny how the Bengal famine was caused by overpopulation, a devastating cyclone, and the Japanese invading Burma and in addition to slaughtering and torturing 10000s of locals, cutting off the rice supply to a Bengal that relied on imports, driving refugees out in to Bengal to add to the misery, and other factors such as inter Indian State protectionism, all at a time of the worlds worst war right on Bengals doorstep making it the front line of a war zone.
But I suppose it must be the nasty white Brits to blame, as usual, it always is. The japanese didn't have rape camps and genocidal weapon labs, they were inventing Mario Bros.. |
