In a statement to Parliament on Monday, the home secretary said 137,500 people had attended more than 200 protests across the UK over the weekend.

She said 135 people had been arrested in total, while 35 police officers had been injured since protests began.

She was challenged by a Labour MP Florence Eshalomi, who asked her whether she recognised the "structural inequality, discrimination and racism" in the UK and called on her to act.

But Ms Patel said she would "not take lectures" from others about racism, and gave examples of the racist abuse she had personally received, including facing racial slurs in the playground and on the streets, and being advised to use her husband's surname in order to advance her career.

Avon and Somerset Police told the BBC 17 people had been identified in connection with the toppling of Colston's statue. No arrests have yet been made.

Chief Constable Andy Marsh defended the decision taken by commanders on the ground not to intervene when the statue was torn down and dumped in the harbour.

He said arresting suspects could have had "very serious ramifications" for the city of Bristol, including injuries to protesters, police and bystanders.

* Correction 0.2%. Apologies at the maths there.

Seems a very low percentage given the media coverage.

Could be a non-issue in a week or two when the media moves on.

And about 0.2% of that 0.2 % were engaged  and intent on violence.

Nevertheless I was against these protests occurring in the midst of a pandemic, if we start to see a spike in cases/deaths in a couple of weeks they will part own.

Doubt you will see a spike, we have probably had 500k visitors to our Coastal town in the last month, no sign of an uptick locally.

Would have been a lower percentage had 60,000 not been slaughtered

It seems to be a non-issue to most of the population.

Piers Morgan this morning suggesting Trump so kneel live on TV.

Surely that would be out of touch with the majority?

How many anti-lockdown protests did you attend or organise?

and how many #BronzeLivesMatters (credit: PorcupineOrPineapple) have you attended?

If the answer is "zero" to both or either, can we conclude that both are total non-topics for you?

Oh, I wasn't aware of that. Never seen him mention it. I'm sorry, it was out of place.

Point remains though that attendance of protests does not directly translate to public opinion. How many people attended anti-EU independence protests before the referendum rolled around? Did they come even close to 100k across the UK on specific dates? Yet, as we all know, it was the majority opinion.

Was it out of touch with reality/the majority for lockdown opponents to demand the end of the lockdown even though those protests never gained much ground?

You are right of course.

A million went to pro-EU rallies and Brexit was won easily in 3 elections.

I suspect the same is true here. The shouting minority egged on by the media go protesting when most people are not particularly interested and when it is out of the news cycle will not be bothered.

Do you think the majority is particularly fussed about some stupid old statues btw.?
By:
edy
When: 09 Jun 20 14:41
Or is it just a shouting minority on either side? One for them to be removed, the other starting thread after thread about them being kept, while the vast majority is like "guys...there's horse racing on!"?
By:
edy
When: 09 Jun 20 14:51
Pretty sure it's similar with Black Lives Matter. Of course the activists are a minority. Of course, the opponents who go onto streets or start thread on internet forums are also a tiny minority. The vast majority couldn't really care less either way. If police brutality stops - fine. If they carry on as always - fine. They might generally be on the side of BLM, they might generally lean more towards thinking it's all a bit silly.

Just about any political activism is always fought out by a "shouting minority" regarding both proponents and opponents of specific actions because the majority will be mostly indifferent enough to not be overly active on an issue. You didn't get millions marching for gay rights. Doesn't mean the majority wasn't in favour, or at least not against, the government continuously giving homosexual people more freedom to be equal.

I suspect the majority respects law and order and does not want mob rule.

It's not a marxist far left plan I tell you.

The cultural revolution was a set of activities carried out in Soviet Russia and the Soviet Union, aimed at a radical restructuring of the cultural and ideological life of society.

It seems you invented it alongside brasslivesmatter

It seems nobody was injured by the removal of the statue

Good to see debate moving forward
