Slaves were physically mutilated by branding, "like sheep or cattle" by their British colonial slave owners.
This ignominious "mark of property," which served to debase enslaved people and split them off from the humanity of the master class.
It marked slaves as the living property of another, and conferred upon them an ineradicable identity with their owner.
All that were passed as fit for sale were branded by the British colonial slave merchants with a hot iron in some part of their body, with the buyer's mark.

Branding was relatively benign in comparison to how Blacks were dealt with by Arab slavers. Many more Black slaves transported to Muslim lands than the Americas yet no Black communities exist in those lands today.

Branding as opposed to castration/death?

I think most reasonable people would probably express an aversion to both, however if really pushed I think you'll find most would find the former slightly less objectionable.

Your grooming gang comparison is clearly abject jibberish.
