They may have lost their teeth, their brains and the use of their limbs but they can cling on to their job like chewing gum on a picnic blanket.

Hearing all sorts of stories of coffin-dodgers deferring the state pension (for a reward)  and waiting for the gold-rush of a redundancy package as their organisation tries to get rid of the liability they represent.

Nobody should "have" to employ someone over pensionable age.

Not much point in deferring your state pension as it takes about 15 years to obtain any real benefit ... you'll either be in your 80s by which time you might be gaga or have already kicked the bucket

Thorough , reliable , trustworthy but very reluctant to embrace change.

Suck up resources in "training" - who really wants to train up a 70 year old on a new IT system ?

Anything that benefits seniors is fine in my book. The way we treat the elderly in this country is a disgrace.

Ageism is real, and far more prevalent than sexism and most other isms you care to mention.

Incompatible with a universal state pension.

Keep on working if you're able, draw the pension if you're not.

Don't do both, you greedy old coffin-dodger.

There is a lot skills that only old men know how to do especially in engineering watched a programme on YouTube about Japanese small factories and how they underpin high tech industries one of these old boys about 15 years ago invented the painless needle for injections something widely considered at the time to be impossible

In reality, only a minority of coffin-dodgers are going to acknowledge personal decline and volunteer to give up their jobs. Then, do you remember how hard it was to get rid of someone at your work who just wouldn't go? That's how hard it is going to be to get rid of these gits.

Now, six months ago in the land of full-employment, that wasn't a huge problem; it is now.

I'm sure older folk bring invaluable skills to the workplace, in many cases. I'm not advocating everyone has to retire at retirement age; I'm saying, if employer and employee want to persevere, let it be on a mutual basis where either side can terminate at will.

Well said platini.

If they are capable of doing the work concerned, then I don`t see what the problem is.

A friend of mine worked for the same company since he left school and never missed a shift. He was made redundant at 60 due to cut backs. He was lost without his work and died within 3 months.

Some people have to work some people want to work. The former is a problem, the latter is not.

Old people have a lot to offer particularly to stupid young men. There has been a breakdown of family structures during my lifetime. We used to talk about children from " broken homes ". Now 23% of children come from single parent families whatever that means. I am not sure if that means they live with one parent or only have one parent.

Back in the day we started drinking in pubs from 13/14. We were shown how to behave in pubs by older men not the police. Sadly there is not much interaction between young an old any more. The youngsters are worse off for it.

One of the most important pieces of information I ever received was from an old fella who told me  if you are in the army in the Far East keep your johnnies in a tin because if you don't the ants will eat them and all that will be left of them is the ring at the end! Sadly although a great piece of advice I have never been in a position to use it fully!
