Huge crowds gathered in Hyde Park this afternoon despite ongoing social distancing rules as many campaigners wore face coverings and held signs with messages such as 'Please, I can't breathe', 'BLM' and 'Colour ≠ Crime'.
The rally comes as global demonstrations gather pace following the death of 46-year-old black man Mr Floyd who died after white police officer Derek Chauvin put his knee on his neck for nine minutes in Minneapolis on May 25.
Today, Star Wars star Boyega told the crowd: 'Black lives have always mattered. We have always been important. We have always meant something. We have always succeeded regardless. And now is the time. I ain't waiting.'
Police were generally keeping in the background of the protest while their helicopters circled above. Banners included 'Enough is Enough', 'Remember Smiley Culture', 'Remember Cherry Groce', and 'UK is not innocent'.
One protester wore a Colin Kaepernick shirt after the black American footballer who started the knee protest in the US. Thousands of demonstrators at times went down on one knee chanting 'George Floyd, George Floyd.'
It comes after UK chief constables joined forces to say they were 'appalled and horrified' by the death and called for 'justice and accountability', while warning those attending protests to do so while maintaining a safe distance.
Separately, anti-racism campaign group Stand Up to Racism is urging Britons to 'take the knee' on their doorsteps at 6pm tonight for a protest against discrimination which is also backing the Black Lives Matter movement.

Has anyone figured exactly out what their tangible demands are as yet? Never mind whether they can be met. Or why 'protesting' last Wednesday and yesterday already doesn't satisfy their 'need' to protest (not withstanding the fact they are technically illegal at this point).
Just people essentially wanting to make themselves feel good about themselves but in effect mindless idiots who clearly don't care too much about human life.

We can't be blind to the specific dynamics of this. They are not peaceful in the normal sense. Yes quite a few are along for the ride and social media profile. Some want to legitimately show solidarity with the protests in the US (from their perspective). Many of them are angry people, raised to believe white people are the enemy and spoiling for a fight. I don't envy the decision makers. If the protests were actually banned and actively prevented as you suggest, not only would there be a lot of violence to police that anyway, the mainstream media narrative would be that this is just the oppressed black voices being silenced again by the (white) people in power. Let's be clear, the antagonists here won't rest until they get the fight with the authorities they want.
It would easier to call that argument a sieve.
Injera is pro kettling so must be in favour of the unrest that always comes from that instigation

Police horses are clearly not a suitable method of crowd control at this type of protest if they get spooked by the rolling of a bike, it is dangerous for all involved

What's your alternative suggestion. Tear gas? Rubber bullets? Water cannon? Tanks? Considering the soft approach was taken advantage of by the thugs.

Plod back off, kneel down and allow covid breaches, vandalism and violence. I think it’s fair to want the police to enforce covid regulations, protect memorials and restore law and order. Bear in mind the thugs have no discernible demands.

There was huge anger from the right wing internet people with regards to the French police during these protests who now agree with militarised police, go figure Crazy

i am getting tired of reading about right and left.your cant say this or that if your one or the other it seems. surely its about right and wrong whatever your political views. personally i dont know what these british protests are about.nobody will make me feel guilty for being white and nobody will call me priviledged to my face.me and my parents have worked for over 40years each for every penny and every single thing we have ever had.my family do that now as well.so forgive me for being angry at these scenes lately

I have to agree with this sentiment and I am normally a Labour voter.
I do think this is an attempt by the Liberal Left to try and get some traction. They have not been able to through the normal democratic means, a general election, and for most of the Left, the whole Brexit thing has been a bit of a killer. They really thought all those large marches in London would win it back for them, disregarding the thoughts of the silent majority. Their only weapon is this identity politics. The privilege white argument being only its latest instalment.
Of course, the looters do them no favours, so the strategy is to downplay all that, as it doesn’t fit the narrative. Throw in the already split tensions across US society, helped in no small way by Trump, a terrible killing of someone being arrested, and you have your latest cause celebre.
They can’t see the irony of attacking a man who defeated fascists.

Not really sure what's "fake" about it. It shows a group of police officers running from a violent mob. Whether that was becuase they felt it was so out of control they had to withdraw and bring in the riot police doesn't change that.
