Lets hope so,think plenty will be happy to visit as soon as they open,i guess it depends on the restrictions in place whether its worthwhile opening.

We will be pishing our hard-earned away soon enough.

Fear not
Report Baphornet May 31, 2020 4:24 PM BST
pubs with gardens will be first; the pubs i like haven't got any. So on a personal note, some of my favs will go under
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- May 31, 2020 4:28 PM BST
They are talking about opening bookies

I don't see why pubs should be far behind.

Might be a 12noon to 9pm to begin with and an hour
Closed at some point, or something like that.

They need to open, and the government and licencees
need to sort a plan pdq
Report Baphornet May 31, 2020 4:31 PM BST
a bit diff Donny; bookies get 4 frutiy players & 2 codgers reading the Racing Post from back to front. Pubs will go berserkaroono
Report Dotchinite May 31, 2020 4:32 PM BST
Until they stop all this social distancing **** pubs will be rubbish even if they do manage to reopen. At present I cant see any bothering even if they get the go ahead for the 4th July. Just not feasible for most.
Report 1st time poster May 31, 2020 4:34 PM BST
depends if your prepared to pay any price rises brought in to pay for less cutomers
Report Angoose May 31, 2020 4:34 PM BST
If all goes well during the next month, individual behaviours will have changed such that individuals will be comfortable to venture indoors in to bars.
Big if though.
Report morpteh mackem May 31, 2020 4:35 PM BST
read article today about how pubs could look, about distancing, table service, booking times to go to the pub, having a maitre'd etc , i was nearly in tears Cry . surely it cant come to this.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- May 31, 2020 4:35 PM BST
A bit diff but potential is same

You might even get more in a bookies over a day, touching same things

Whereas you can go into a pub and more or less distance, if limits
are placed.

My local could open without problem so long as quiz poker and bingo were scrapped.
Report Ibrahima Sonko May 31, 2020 4:36 PM BST
Social distancing will be fine, just operate at 25% capacity to begin with and table service only and limited hours cos the drunks will ruin it for everyone.
Report 1st time poster May 31, 2020 4:39 PM BST
most wernt turing a profit at 100% capacity, like I say are you prepared to pay more
Report Baphornet May 31, 2020 4:40 PM BST
ffs table serviceLaugh as i said i go in pubs with no gardens. Bookies don't get social gatherings, & that will not change, those days were well gone before this disruption. Pubs are a completely diff matter, even if ye have to shout at each other a bit more
Report morpteh mackem May 31, 2020 4:44 PM BST
dont mind paying more at all, ( within reason ) if it helps get more money into system , keeps people in jobs etc, all for it.
could limit people at bar etc but daresay without stating obvious, not all pubs are same. whats good for a sma boozer in rural northumberland, isn't necessarily applicable to a pub in newcastle city centre, or a flash gastropub in southernenglandsville.

One of bookies I visit always has over 12 folk in during the day.

Some pubs do not.

I know it's not scientific,

Pub owners need a plan and to get it out there.

I'd like to see a local order where they could use car park space as a beer garden
Or green spaces in front of pub.

Pubs have been going under for a long time now, and plenty were no doubt struggling before the virus.

Many, especially countryside pubs, have already had to diversify into offering accommodation and/orexpanding into pub restaurants often making more with their food offerings and now that side of the business is out of action too.

If they were struggling to make ends meet before and are going to come back having to spend money on safety and SD measures with limited capacity/opening hours it doesn't bode well for them.

It is hard to judge whether the public will be itching to get back to normal and flock to them (which may cause problems) and then drift away or whether many people will be reluctant to return.

People who have had more time to spend cooking, learning to cook new things and cooking from scratch at home may be less inclined to spend money on eating out.

Lots of bars are now owned by pub chains; even some in out of town places & countryside areas ... Will the owners spend dosh on making them safe for future customers .. whilst i'm sure they would like to sell some the demand won't be here so they are going to need to absorb short term losses in the hope of long term returns
Wonder how Wetherspoons will get on ... some do have beer gardens but others within an urban evironment will certainly struggle to cope ... they usually get the regular trade with the deadheads who frequent them but they aren't likely to adhere to social distancing on a voluntary basis

I think over the coming months public opinion is going to change sharply once they realise all the things they enjoy are going to be ruined just to protect a small section of society. This has all been a bit of a novelty to a lot at present getting their wages paid and just sitting at home but when a lot lose their jobs and we still arent allowed to do the things we have always enjoyed the Government is going to have no choice but to back down.
Its total madness what we have done to this country but its not too late to change course. First step reduce this stupid 2m rule that had no scientific logic and is in excess of most other countries. That at least gives pubs a chance.

I read some of the things that pubs (and other businesses) are doing to open up.  Spending a lot of money installing things like booths, perspex screens and the like.  I'm sure they know what they're doing or maybe it's desperation but it seems bonkers.

Don't want booths and screens we have homes

We want places to meet up in safety.

A few pubs near me have "opened up". Take away beer only but they are near village greens/parks etc.
The toilets are not open so is causing problems with local residents not very happy .

I know one local landlord who is worried that by the time he has made the changes necessary to open a large percentage of his drinkers wont want to be there and given that there will be a percentage who will still be hiding at home is doubtful its worth opening at all.

Report Coachbuster May 31, 2020 6:29 PM BST
you can get 2 litres of ale for less at the local supermarket
Report Mexico May 31, 2020 6:32 PM BST
Coach,

Was getting towards £6 a pint in many a London pub, central London pubs already over that price.
It isn't just Covid killing off pubs, supermarkets selling the same (or similar) product for about £1.
Report Baphornet May 31, 2020 6:36 PM BST
fiver a pint in my local; & the customers would pay 10. That is purely because of the type of pub it is; & how rare
Report Coachbuster May 31, 2020 6:38 PM BST
i don't get the logic mexico ...plus they were pouring away beer  b'cos it was out of date  but perfectly drinkable
Report Mexico May 31, 2020 7:00 PM BST
Yep agree Coach, strange times, have relatives who own a pub so hope things pick up soon.

Only a small percentage of pubs can make money offering a take away service. Nee not offer a "special " drink people love but can't get elsewhere, or with latest easing being next to a park, beech, common (where drinking is allowed).

I personally think £5 a pint is too expensive but still pay it, or at least did until lockdown. I didn't pay €10 for a beer in Paris last year - €20 for bottle of wine seemed better value.

"takeaway" pub in York was on bbc news last night apparently,my pal knows owner well and they opened last weekend but got shut down but are now open again, apparently you have to seal the drink before selling, toilets obvious problem but bushes nearby in this case.
Had to laugh, forgot where I read it but a guy commented that he didn't particularly fancy going to a restaurant when the waiter looks as though he's about to operate on you.

Most expensive I have seen is in the Manchester Piccadilly tap.  Some of the beers are around the 10% ABV mark though!
