I read some of the things that pubs (and other businesses) are doing to open up. Spending a lot of money installing things like booths, perspex screens and the like. I'm sure they know what they're doing or maybe it's desperation but it seems bonkers.

A few pubs near me have "opened up". Take away beer only but they are near village greens/parks etc.
The toilets are not open so is causing problems with local residents not very happy . |

I know one local landlord who is worried that by the time he has made the changes necessary to open a large percentage of his drinkers wont want to be there and given that there will be a percentage who will still be hiding at home is doubtful its worth opening at all.

Was getting towards £6 a pint in many a London pub, central London pubs already over that price. It isn't just Covid killing off pubs, supermarkets selling the same (or similar) product for about £1. |

fiver a pint in my local; & the customers would pay 10. That is purely because of the type of pub it is; & how rare

Yep agree Coach, strange times, have relatives who own a pub so hope things pick up soon.
Only a small percentage of pubs can make money offering a take away service. Nee not offer a "special " drink people love but can't get elsewhere, or with latest easing being next to a park, beech, common (where drinking is allowed). I personally think £5 a pint is too expensive but still pay it, or at least did until lockdown. I didn't pay €10 for a beer in Paris last year - €20 for bottle of wine seemed better value. |

people used to laugh at Sweden charging 5,6 quid a pint and their hourly wage stood it, minimum wage joibs here and a godiva a pint, madness

"takeaway" pub in York was on bbc news last night apparently,my pal knows owner well and they opened last weekend but got shut down but are now open again,apparently you have to seal the drink before selling,toilets obvious problem but bushes nearby in this case.
Had to laugh,forgot where I read it but a guy commented that he didn't particularly fancy going to a restaurant when the waiter looks as though he's about to operate on you. |

A pub near me has been selling drinks for weeks (fri-sun), all unopened and you are not allowed to drink it in sight of the pub and are supposed to take it home. The police tried to shut him but what he was doing is legal.
He also sell trendy cold drinks, milk shakes,slush drinks & cocktails. |

thanks for answers , i am reassured, been outside drinking in garden with mrs m, had to come in as bit cold now. tunes on, believe or not, its china crisis- no more blue horizons ,fool fool fool

agree with docs 17.02 post.once the young drinkers start large gatherings and social disorder starts the pubs will be relaxed to corral them in.i for one am not going into a pub with screens,gloves,goggles and masks etc.

some of the real ale micro pubs i know wont be able to open with restrictions as wouldnt make it pay, if they did open theyre thinking of invite only to the regulars who used to go, these pubs are like 50 max pubs with restrictions that will be 10, none of them got beer gardens

Most expensive I have seen is in the Manchester Piccadilly tap. Some of the beers are around the 10% ABV mark though! |
