Boris Johnson is under fresh pressure to sack Dominic Cummings as a new poll shows that more than two-thirds of voters – including more than half of Tories – want him thrown out of Downing Street for breaching lockdown rules.

The survey by Opinium for the Observer shows a massive 81% think Cummings broke the rules. It also finds that support for the Conservatives is collapsing, with the party now just four points ahead of Labour, having had a commanding lead of 26 points just two months ago.

In the past week alone, the Tory lead has fallen by eight points, the largest weekly drop Opinium has recorded since 2017.

After several days in which the news has been dominated by the row over Cummings’ trip from London to Durham with his wife and child, and his refusal to apologise, public anger is laid bare by the poll. Some 68% think Cummings should resign. If he does not, 66% believe he should be sacked by Johnson.

As he stood by his adviser, Johnson said he would ultimately leave the public to make up their minds. The poll, and a petition calling for Cummings to be dismissed that has attracted over a million signatures, show where the balance of opinion lies.

War at the Mail? Daily Mail anti-Cummings all last week. Mail on Sunday pro-Cummings; well, not so much defending Cummings as attacking his critics.

Not really sure why the government is so keen to hang on to Cummings. Look at what a cods we've made of Covid-19. We are near the top of most of the league tables and not in a good way. I don't know which parts Cummings is responsible for but it is hard to conclude he is doing much good.

Add to that he is not even a Tory. They should do what Blair did with Mandelson. Sack him then bring him back a few months later when all the fuss has died down. Labour did it twice with Mandelson.

Boris -- if you are reading this, don't sack him before Monday. I've backed Cummings still to be there tomorrow.

. Tory lead down over Lab from 26 pts in late March to 4pts now. Down 8pts in week. 2/3s don't believe Cummings. 81% say he broke rules. 52% of Tories say should quit. 68% of public say he should go, 66% that PM should fire C if not.

That was always the government plan.

Labour failed to mobilise a unified response from the opposition. I don't think Starmer is comfortable working cross party. He got tetchy with the SNP on several occasions during the Brexit debate. All in all a badly missed opportunity to apply concerted pressure.

That said to be fair there was a very awkward moment at yesterday's press conference where Van Tam seemed to suggest that he didn't back the government's response.

Also the press will jump on any new information.

There are plenty of elections to bet on in the UK before the next general election, plenty of markets currently available.

Meanwhile, former teacher Robin Lees, who called police about Mr Cummings taking a trip from his parents’ Durham home to Barnard Castle, last night admitted to making a long-distance trip himself.

He drove from his home in Barnard Castle earlier this month to pick up his student daughter who had been self-isolating at her boyfriend’s home in Berkshire. She was seen at the family home last week, but Mr Lees insists he complied with the relevant rules at the time.

Not sure what the Mails agenda is since they were taken over by Geordie Greig.
