It's the same as text messaging.

Pluses: You can send pictures and videos for free; and it has end-to-end encryption, the same as you get when texting between two iPhones. With WhatsApp you get that encryption even if one party has an Android phone and the other an iPhone. That's the reason I downloaded it: my cousin in Ukraine has an Android phone and I have an iPhone; by using WhatsApp we'd be able to communicate in the event of an emergency without the dwarf in the Kremlin intercepting us.

Negatives: it's owned by Facebook, which is supposed to be a bad thing, but I'm not sure how, as I'm not on Facebook.
