With the cost of borrowing nothing, there is no desperation to take any rash action. However, the crisis does give Rishi and the government the 'cover' to make some truly radical changes to the structure of the economy. Allied with severing ties with the EU at the end of the year, there is a large opportunity to turn the UK into a growth economy. Starting with corp tax. They can also reform stuff that would otherwise have been politically difficult like pensions, self employment, NI and the tv tax.
Higher rate tax relief on pensions is one obvious overly generous concession. The whole thing could be simplified and reformed, I'd like to see a flat rate relief with no cap.
There will never be a bigger window of opportunity to fundamentally reform the structure of the economy in our lifetimes.
