The media love to build up individuals and then run the story like a soap opera. It works, it sells.

I’d like him to declare the NHS a financial black hole and instead give the money to hospices.
Report lybertyne May 8, 2020 8:03 PM BST
The reason he raised so much money is because the media took up his story and heavily publicised it.  An ex-soldier near me did something similar but only raised £15k...because hardly anyone knew about it.
Report cooperman May 9, 2020 8:16 AM BST
Fair credit, the guy got off his @rse and did something to help out. The media has quite rightly publicised his efforts but I have a feeling that he'll handle them like he handled the walk.

A distraction.

While the masses think about old Tom they will not be concentrating on the fraud taking place right in front of their eyes. As emphasised in broad daylight by the antics of Professor Ferguson. If that fails to show you that it is a sham nothing will.

Meanwhile, give us another lap Tom please Cry

it was sickening the way the bbc jumped on his coat tail and virtually hijacked him for viewers.take nothing away from him though i reckon he would of still done it publicity or not.the man is a super example to us all

Yes, BBC Breakfast have a recent history of adopting these veterans. It does them no harm and they know nobody is going to criticise. Outside of the programme you wonder if they give two hoots.

How many poor old veterans are out there and not able to live in luxurious accommodation like Colonel Tom? How about a few stories on them?

Captain Moore has done a sterling job in raising funds for the NHS similarly, others. However, I think it's done to its maximum, and the media need to move on.

Another is the "Voices" (monologue) advert by Nationwide. I find them irritating and tedious now.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- May 9, 2020 2:36 PM BST
Bbc publicised him days before their own fundraiser

So he likely took cash from punters that would have inflated bbc figures.

All for good causes, sometimes we need a kick up the arse to get our chequebook or cards out.

Captain Tom certainly kicked a few arses, mine included,

He really is a shining example of britishness

Genuine question - how do you actually give money to the NHS?  What are the practicalities?
I mean, the NHS isn't a charity, and doesn't have a central "pot".  It's funding is allocated via dozens of individual trusts and stakeholders.

Do you just phone up HMRC and ask for an account to transfer it to?  And if so, how do you know that it will all go to the NHS and not be just thrown in the central government treasury pot like all other taxes.  Seriously, I don't think it's actually physically possible to give money to the NHS unless you paid it directly into the account of an individual hospital's bank.

If you wanted to give, say, £1000 to the NHS. How would you do it, and what confidence would you have that the NHS would receive every penny?
I don't think it's an unreasonable question.

There are many charities set up by hospitals etc.

A good one based in Newcastle is Bright Red

This started life as bone marrow 2000 and operates out of ward 33 of freeman hospital in Newcastle.

It helps folk with blood cancers and provides funds for research.

The guy who helped set it up was in charge of my mams care so I am
biased about donating to this charity but its a fine example of one of the charities that you ask about.

You could probably find others attached to any local hospital,

I do worry about my donations being eaten by
admin costs so I refuse to donate to chuggers

I also donate to food back at football matches I attend
and I can give food which obviously finds its way to
those in need without some being removed for admin.

It would be nice if next year the New Year’s Honours list is comprised entirely of people who did not buy their Honours.

There are plenty of men and women all over the country like Captain Sir Thomas Moore, so many of them unsung heroes.
Report Crisp77 May 20, 2020 10:03 AM BST
The press will turn on him once he starts dating Katie Price.
Report differentdrum May 20, 2020 10:16 AM BST
Presumably, Dan Walker will be doing the honours? Perhaps Breakfast TV could build a studio in his back garden?

To think a few weeks ago he was just someone hoping to make 100.
