This shows that the no of Covid tests being carried out in this part of London (and others looking at reporting) have been scaled back because of demand for reagents. So cutting back on tests just after it was increased to hit target?

It's amazing how the mathematical minds of gamblers understand the true meaning of statistics and charts better than any numpty turning up to present them at a daily government briefing.
At least we know how bad it's likely to get, the rest of the public being dumbed down with transport use charts and such are in for a bit of a shock soon me thinks.
Report eyeball May 6, 2020 6:52 PM BST
Ok Angoose. I will educate you

Testing , track and trace is the correct way to go when a virus enters the country . You find the people who are infected , isolate them and stop them from infecting others . I would suggest that at least 15-20 % of the population have already been infected . Random testing in New York state , a population of c. 20 million have shown similar levels .
South Korea and Taiwan introduced this immediately and it shows in their figures . There was little chance of infection as the carriers were isolated , curtailing the spread .
We did not shut down early , did not track and trace and allowed the virus to spread . Now , anywhere between four and six months later , our government decide to put it in place . If 15 million people or more have been or are infected and we are looking to stop lock down then there will be more infections .
Let's say you have been in contact with someone and you are told to isolate . There will be people all over the country stopping work and isolating as well as those in the same household . It will be madness .

So what will it achieve ? It will show people who have or might have had the virus . It will not save the target groups from DYING .

What do you think it will achieve and what will they do with the data to save lives ?
Report peckerdunne May 6, 2020 7:28 PM BST
that is the difficulty and shows the Government are still behind the nine ball with no clear strategy

they dont have the people to track and trace, they cant test throughput quick enough

they are trialing an app which wont work and appear totally clueless

the formula i believe for testing to work is 100 times daily, the daily death rate..

but the window is only 3 days according to the experts, catch it, 2 days later you are a spreader,3 days to keep a lid on track and trace, if you aint testing throughput in 48 hrs you are moving backwards i am led to believe
Report N-east Correspondent May 6, 2020 7:48 PM BST
Testing is not 100% accurate in any case, people have been told negative only to be positive a day later.
NHS staff / patients still not being tested unless showing main symptoms so potentially all could be asymptomatic carriers in a hospital / care home environment or anywhere else for that matter - the horse has well and truly bolted and we're like the racecourse people running about flapping our arms to stop it.

Bugger, typed out a response then lost my internet connection. Will retype.
Report Angoose May 6, 2020 9:24 PM BST
Ok, your earlier post gave a reasonable description of TTI, so no need for me to repeat it.

However, what I think this exchange has revealed is that we have been squabbling over misinterpreted understanding of each others posts.
This is what can happen on an internet forum.

So, would I be correct to state that you have been raising an objection to a TTI strategy being deployed in the UK at this present moment in time ?
Report eyeball May 6, 2020 9:36 PM BST
You still haven't answered my question ?Confused
Report Angoose May 6, 2020 9:39 PM BST
If you want me to provide a description of the general principles of a TTI strategy, I will, but as I have described, I suspect that is not what we have been at odds over.
Report eyeball May 6, 2020 10:01 PM BST
I'm not pressing you in particular . I just can't grasp why TTI strategy is effective after 4-6 months of infection ?

The governments paper on Influenza Preparedness Pandemic Strategy 2011 table 1 declares that : Detection , diagnosis and reporting of early cases

through testing and contract testing was a key healthcare delivery at the initial stage .

I know the virus is not influenza but the government have tried to use the strategies that they have published during this pandemic . I am pretty

certain they have made grave errors both in timing and preparation .

You will find the document here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/responding-to-a-uk-flu-pandemic

Just download the pdf . Did they read it ?
Report Angoose May 6, 2020 10:16 PM BST
I've already seen that document, though have not read it in anything like detail.

However, you have provided more evidence of the point that I was trying to make which is that you are questioning why a TTT strategy (don't know where I got the TTI from) would be rolled out at this stage of the UK epidemic.

To suggest that the relevant people in the UK medical and scientific community are not intimately familiar with the contents of this document is somewhat odd, though I suspect that you are being somewhat sarcastic.

It appears that we are in agreement that the best course of action has not been followed to date.

For clarity, when I was stating that testing is important earlier, let me briefly describe some examples of what I was referring to.

Today, there were a reported 6,111 new cases in the UK.
We only know that because the individuals displayed symptoms, presented for testing and received a positive result.

I would deem those tests to be very important to the individuals concerned, as well as their close family and others they have been in recent close contact with.

Do you agree with me on that narrow point ?
Report eyeball May 6, 2020 10:31 PM BST
I don't know
Report Angoose May 6, 2020 10:39 PM BST
I suspect that those who received the results probably think that it was very important to have been tested.
Anyway, knocking it on the head for the night, go and watch some tele.
