The prime minister’s spokesman said that the NHS Nightingale hospital in London - the 4,000-bed emergency hospital set up within days in the ExCel centre, would be put “on standby”. He said that it was not expected to admit any new patients in the coming days, and he said as a result it would be put on standby, ready to receive patients if needed. He said there were five Nightingale hospitals open in total in England, and another two being prepared. The spokesman would not confirm that the ones outside London would also be put on hold too. But he said that the fact that the Nightingale hospitals were largely not be used did not mean that opening them was a mistake.

The London NHS Nightingale hospital will be placed “on standby” with no new coronavirus admissions expected in the coming days, Downing Street has said.
The prime minister’s official spokesman said the decision was due to limited demand for its services, adding: “It’s not likely that in the coming days we will need to be admitting patients to the London Nightingale while coronavirus in the capital remains under control.
“That’s obviously a very positive thing and we remain grateful to everybody in London for following the government’s advice in helping to protect the NHS.
“What the Nightingale will be is effectively placed on standby so it would be ready to receive patients should that be required, but we are not anticipating that will be the case.”
Giving an update on the Nightingale programme in England, the spokesman said: “Manchester has taken some patients already; Birmingham, Harrogate and Bristol are ready to take patients if needed. The other two are Sunderland and Exeter and they are due to open shortly.”
The fact that the Nightingale hospitals had not been “used in a significant way” was “something that is positive and we are grateful to the public for its role in that”, he said.
“People followed the advice to stay at home, that’s slowed the rate of infection and meant that the NHS wasn’t overwhelmed.”
The hospitals were “absolutely not” a waste of money, the spokesman said.

In my local hospital nurses are still being encouraged to take their holiday due to overstaffing. Nurses who’ve done 20 years get 8 weeks.

I thought the plan would be to keep them for Covid patients so regular hospitals could be Covid free.
I was wondering about that on here a few weeks back. No doubt I've missed it but I'm sure, by now, the question must have been asked by one of the incisive journos and answered to full satisfaction
Not just keeping staff/patients separated to reduce spread but maybe even allowing the regular hospitals to do more of their scheduled ops / visits which are no doubt important for the health of those involved ?

Good that they weren't used. There was a time when we were not sure. I doubt they would have had enough ICU nurses to run them but they were built even if thankfully not needed.
The fact of the matter is the Government does not know what it is doing. I have said it from before the start to now and they still do not know what they are doing. They have left the old folk to die in nursing homes in the knowledge at the start they were kept off the statistics if they did not die in hospital. That is truly deplorable and should be a scandal. Hopefully it will come out in the Public Inquiry.
We still do not know what will happen if we have a second wave so it is prudent to keep the beds on stand by. Because we haven't widely tested the population we do not know what will happen when we start the return to work. With a bit of luck we may see that in Europe many people have had the virus and not known and plenty will have immunity and many of the vulnerable have already been infected.
It is a mess and I have absolutely no confidence in those in charge and would rather take my own chances and make my own decisions on how to protect myself. There is a clear view that the science is being amended to suit Government needs and that is wrong.

Re Care/Nursing Home deaths, do we know the extra mortality rates yet?

They seem to have planned it ages ago.
Harrogate has a conference centre and has such has room to host a nightingale and the infrastructure is easily planned in a town that has a history of hosting events with inflows from the area and outside.
I think they did a good job planning and constructing these nightingales
Pity they didn't use them to treat the 10s of thousands left to die in care homes.

If you google - Valerie Martin French care homes you will probably have had the only right solution to care homes (in hindsight).
I agree the Nightingales should have been built,no one knew,they would have been lambasted if people were dying in the street,they weren't tbf leaving that happen.
Harsh to say they "spaffed" money with them,ok maybe they should stop now, they are "spaffing" in other areas,a lot of that is employees fault taking advantage, they should be ashamed of themselves(employees)

All these confirmed cases are going up between the 0.2% and 0.3% range, London has 0.2% confirmed cases, Midlands has 0.24% confirmed cases etc
