The London NHS Nightingale hospital will be placed “on standby” with no new coronavirus admissions expected in the coming days, Downing Street has said. The prime minister’s official spokesman said the decision was due to limited demand for its services, adding: “It’s not likely that in the coming days we will need to be admitting patients to the London Nightingale while coronavirus in the capital remains under control. “That’s obviously a very positive thing and we remain grateful to everybody in London for following the government’s advice in helping to protect the NHS. “What the Nightingale will be is effectively placed on standby so it would be ready to receive patients should that be required, but we are not anticipating that will be the case.” Giving an update on the Nightingale programme in England, the spokesman said: “Manchester has taken some patients already; Birmingham, Harrogate and Bristol are ready to take patients if needed. The other two are Sunderland and Exeter and they are due to open shortly.” The fact that the Nightingale hospitals had not been “used in a significant way” was “something that is positive and we are grateful to the public for its role in that”, he said. “People followed the advice to stay at home, that’s slowed the rate of infection and meant that the NHS wasn’t overwhelmed.” The hospitals were “absolutely not” a waste of money, the spokesman said. |

In my local hospital nurses are still being encouraged to take their holiday due to overstaffing. Nurses who’ve done 20 years get 8 weeks.
Bank holidays pay double time PLUS a day off in lieu. First 8 hours of a bank holiday night shift pay triple time plus a day off. |

I thought the plan would be to keep them for Covid patients so regular hospitals could be Covid free.
Maybe there are so few cases after the intitial surge even that is not required. |

I thought the plan would be to keep them for Covid patients so regular hospitals could be Covid free. I was wondering about that on here a few weeks back. No doubt I've missed it but I'm sure, by now, the question must have been asked by one of the incisive journos and answered to full satisfaction Not just keeping staff/patients separated to reduce spread but maybe even allowing the regular hospitals to do more of their scheduled ops / visits which are no doubt important for the health of those involved ? |

The hospitals were “absolutely not” a waste of money, they should come in handy next year after everybody has been forced vaccinated and feeling ill.

Utterly despicable behaviour from the get go
"another 2 being prepared" when do we topple the government for being lying bas*ards? As make my hay alludes to, they are not going to shut, not all of them anyway, because once 5G goes live and gets ramped up, with the vaccine added in, they'll be needing them |

Good that they weren't used. There was a time when we were not sure. I doubt they would have had enough ICU nurses to run them but they were built even if thankfully not needed.
The fact of the matter is the Government does not know what it is doing. I have said it from before the start to now and they still do not know what they are doing. They have left the old folk to die in nursing homes in the knowledge at the start they were kept off the statistics if they did not die in hospital. That is truly deplorable and should be a scandal. Hopefully it will come out in the Public Inquiry. We still do not know what will happen if we have a second wave so it is prudent to keep the beds on stand by. Because we haven't widely tested the population we do not know what will happen when we start the return to work. With a bit of luck we may see that in Europe many people have had the virus and not known and plenty will have immunity and many of the vulnerable have already been infected. It is a mess and I have absolutely no confidence in those in charge and would rather take my own chances and make my own decisions on how to protect myself. There is a clear view that the science is being amended to suit Government needs and that is wrong. |

Re Care/Nursing Home deaths, do we know the extra mortality rates yet?
Up to 100k die in these homes each year. Sad but inevitable. |

Russia confirmed 10,581 new coronavirus infections Monday, bringing the country’s official number of cases to 145,268. Russia is now the seventh most-affected country in terms of infections, having surpassed China, Turkey and Iran last week. Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on Thursday confirmed that he has the coronavirus, making him the highest-ranking official in Russia to contract the virus. Seventy-six people died over the past 24 hours, bringing the total toll to 1,356. Russia is emerging as a new hotspot for the coronavirus as many countries in western Europe begin steps to ease lockdown measures after their rates of new infections and deaths dropped. Despite the sharp rise in cases, Russia's official fatality rate has remained low in comparison to countries including Italy, Spain and the United States. Officials credit quick moves to close the country's borders, as well as widespread testing and tracking of infections, but critics have cast doubts on the numbers. Authorities have extended a non-working quarantine period until May 11 but have also indicated they could then gradually lift confinement measures which vary from region to region. Moscow has emerged as the epicentre of the pandemic in Russia, with around half the total coronavirus cases. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has warned that "the threat is apparently on the rise" and urged residents to respect confinement rules and anti-virus measures over the May holidays. |

The Sunday Telegraph yesterday reported on the 1968 flu pandemic. Took out 80000 in the UK. No lockdowns. As it says "The Generation in power had a more sanguine attitude to diseases". I think the rot set in with the mass hysteria when Di was wiped out in the Paris tunnel.
