I remember over 30 years ago one of my workmates used to prepare the stuff by hand and then bake it in his oven, and fair play it tasted delicious too. In the end he was even taking sone orders from paying colleagues.

Then around 15 years ago I remember another one of my mates, sadly now deceased, spending half his day baking loaves in some sort of noisy bread-making machine. Flour and mess all over the place, and not exactly the sort of thing I imagine happening in Mary 'Bez' Berry's kitchen. Bottom line though was that his loaves tasted damned fine as well.

Given the lockdown, I think this is something I might finally have a go at.  Can anyone recommend one of these half-decent (preferably quiet) breadmaking machines that even a first time breadmaker should manage to use successfully?

Cheers if you can help. Hopefully in six months time I should be able to put Hovis out of business.

you dont knead (Pardon the pun) a machine Alun .
made some by hand this week loaf and bread cobs came out fine
just knead plenty of kneading  a good upper body excercise to boot.
put a pan of hot water in bottom of oven gives a good crisp crust.

used  left over dough following day as a Pizza base with leftovers in fridge
better than Dominoes that are about £17 a go.

Cheers Geoff. Sounds like you've got the game nailed down cold.

I'd still like to investigate the machine option before I'm up to my elbows in flour.

my top tip:

When you're  kneading the dough by hand, don't add any more flour to it. Put a decent drizzle of olive oil on the surface upon which you are kneading the aforementioned dough.

This guy is really good if you want to bake bread without the scientific approach adopted by some .of the more poncey bakers.

Here's a demonstration of using olive oil to knead dough.

Occasionally have the urge to buy a breadmaker but usually when I watch a demo on YT I change my mind, never seen a demo that looked successful.

I recall someone once telling me a tale of how they set the timer on their bread maker such that they woke up each morning to the smell of freshly baked bread. Lovely.

Apparently, the fire brigade were most grateful when they came round early one morning to extinguish the resultant kitchen fire Shocked

i wonder whether that woman from the 'Bake Off' show would be interested in our collective efforts?

I can't remember her name but I do recall she is held in great reverence on the Forum. There was even an infamous thread about her, erm, gusher....

Report eyeball May 3, 2020 4:59 PM BST
I put it in the boiler cupboard . It has never failed to rise . Use lukewarm water with a half or level teaspoon of sugar to feed your dried or

fresh yeast when mixing the dough .

you have to laugh , so do I . Mine is in a cupboard but close by should keep off the chill . If it doesn't rise and you are using fresh yeast , then it is dead . Have another go , the birds love a bakerLove

Ensure all your ingredients are at the same room temperature, whatever that temperature is at the time.

I use a plastic bowl to prove the dough covered with clingfilm.

I use Morrison's paket yeast sachets.

Don''t add any flour to the dough once you've started kneading or you'll end up with a 'brick'.
