A man who lost his wife to coronavirus after being told she ‘was not a priority’ has spoke of the pain of self-isolating inside the house where she died and the struggle to afford a funeral. Fabian Williams, a refuse collector, said he can’t pay the £5,000+ bill to bury his ‘wonderful’ partner Kayla.
The mother-of-three died on Saturday 21 March, a day after paramedics were called to her home in Peckham. Despite being ‘breathless, vomiting and having pains in her stomach’ she was not taken to hospital – a mistake Fabian believes cost Kayla, 36, her life. Her death came one week after her 10-year-old daughter arrived in the country from Jamaica, but she has not been able to say goodbye to her mother properly. Not only does Fabian, 50, have to self-isolate due to his diabetes, delaying funeral arrangements, but is he also at a loss as to how to get the funds together to pay for the send off she deserves.
