Quite incredible interview with Stephen Sackur on HARDtalk on the World Service earlier - repeated @ 0806hrs this morning and it'll be on the box somewhere.

As the global effort to control Covid-19 continues so arguments about culpability for the spread of the pandemic intensify. At the centre of the story is China, where the outbreak began. Did the Chinese government’s impulse to cover up the truth cost the world dear? Or did China respond with admirable determination? I think Sackur was wrong to bring in the market nonsense, more an animal rights thing. The bat involved in the disease lives a thousand miles away and was nowhere near that market, the disease was leaked from the lab.
Having said that, the Ambassador illustrates everything dodgy about China.

You just made that up, you have no facts to support it.
Sackur has no facts to support his claim that it was the market. Did you notice that the only time the Ambassador cosied up to him in 20 minutes was when the market was blamed? Probably not.

I'm interested in your keenness to defend the Chinese state.
Thought it was rather a pointless interview, the Chinese Ambassador was never going to come on and say, "Yes it was all our fault, we accidentally let it out of our research centre in Wuhan, how much money do you want in compensation." Presume he likes living!

Whatever it was China's intention to hush-up coronavirus asap eg silencing whistleblowers, terrorising and rounding-up any suspected Covid-19 sufferers with their gestapo snatch squad and denying the outside world entrance into China esp Wuhan when requested would not auger well in their defence come an enquiry.
China did not restrict or disallow their citizens to travel abroad either knowing how contagious and deadly the virus were.
