a, they have shares in them
b,theyve all got big countryside gardens
c. they go there for sunday dinner

in the big scheme of things don't think many people are going to bed  wetting themselves about garden centres been open or closed

out for a walk around 12ish i counted 3 kebab shops open.the indians on the corner had a sign up saying they were open at 6pm. all within a 100 yards of each other.however smack in the middle of them was greggs and its closed.
Report 1st time poster April 29, 2020 1:50 PM BST
earlier on the thread the complaint is aldi for example can sell plants/flowers etc, their supposed to be open for essential shopping only which doesn't include plants,so your fighting your own argument, garden centres will only want to open if they can sell their full range, then other shops which sell stuff that garden centres are now selling, will say why cant we open the garden centre down the road is selling furniture, fish, tools, electrical goods etc,etc
B n M, THE RANGE ETC have about 5% of their stock in food so have been open but are  selling jacuzzi,s,barbucue,s anything and everything, they don't just sell the food goods
Report N-east Correspondent April 29, 2020 1:51 PM BST
lidl, aldi etc having been selling plants whilst obviously remaining open for ''essential'' shopping since day one of this
they're total sh!t but that's besides the point...
Report blackbarn April 29, 2020 1:54 PM BST
1st time poster doesn't understand!   The reason they make "pence" on plants is because the production cost is high relative to retail price. A huge percentage of the plant products garden centres sell are perishable/have a short shelf life. Therefore not being able to sell nursery stock means that the entire purchase price is written off not the pennies profit.   Actually on thinking about it Clacton has you about right.
Report 1st time poster April 29, 2020 1:58 PM BST
so you think garden centre,s want to pay staff, electric, overheads etc to sell only plants
Report Whisperingdeath April 29, 2020 1:58 PM BST
I think many privately owned garden centres may go bust or lose a helluva a lot of money for no reason. It would help to keep the lockdown solid if people could stay at home and do some gardening instead of going to the pub to meet their mates because they are bored out of their tiny.

So sad these people may be losing their businesses because we have a Government unable to think for themselves and are hiding behind scientists.
Report clacton April 29, 2020 2:00 PM BST
I have worked in the plant industry. To throw millions of plants away after months of growing them is devastating.
For the nursery owners its even worse. Their living is going down the drain as well.
1st time poster has no idea what that would be like.

Report N-east Correspondent April 29, 2020 2:02 PM BST

and its up to each centre whether they open or not, maybe not essential but neither is the centre aisle of aldi selling wood burners for example
Report 1st time poster April 29, 2020 2:02 PM BST

But loads of people at home probably itching to do some garden work so why not?
Report Dotchinite April 29, 2020 2:10 PM BST
Garden centres need to open quickly due to the limited time their plants will last and the time of year. DONT YOU UNDERSTAND THAT.

Tory MPS are just looking after the interests of hard working business people who might lose everything. Isnt that what people would expect of their MP or should they just be looking after people like you who want to hide in their wardrobe for the next 5 years.

laspy pa. You should know its not as simple as that. How about the UN Report saying economic damage could leave 130 million people facing starvation?
How many people in this country will die if the economy collapses? At some point you have to take into account the economy. I dont see how anyone can dispute that.

How about the report suggesting HALF the workers in the entire world face immediate risk of losing their livelyhood?
Report lapsy pa April 29, 2020 4:25 PM BST
I know exactly what you are saying Dotchinite,i agree with you in theory, sad fact the economy has collapsed in the short/mid term at least, no one/few aren't going to be scarred by social distancing etc, that is going to continue, the economy as was, is gone imo.

Just on the German thing, won't it be a shame if lockdown measures are reinforced? Good chance they tried a tad too early.
Report Dotchinite April 29, 2020 4:29 PM BST
lapsy. yes it does look like they have moved a bit too quick.  The real problem comes when we get to the point where a lockdown cannot be continued regardless of cases. Hopefully everyone can find a way to ease restrictions without r going above 1 before that point is reached.

lapsy. Its damaged not ruined. Ruined will be when there isnt enough money to pay Nurses wages. I dont think you quite get what the implications could be. You certainly cant say morally you cant let this rip through if the alternative will be more deaths.

There is a point where the only option is to let it run its course as the alternative would be worse. Do you disagree with that?
Report 1st time poster April 29, 2020 4:48 PM BST
you can let it runs its course if a spike comes the more will stay in and stay in for longer, they no they can avoid it by taking precautions, you cant force them out to take part in the economy, even if you starve the workers back ,we,re a service economy you cant force people to use the services
Report lapsy pa April 29, 2020 4:49 PM BST
Ruined was a bit strong,it is limping along with vat,tax etc,it is getting something though well down.

I think now it is important to keep farms, food producers, medicine going, forget financials, travel, insurance and other non essentials for now,let them go bust, they will resurrect in time.

I still would be slow to let it run its course, i prefer getting and keeping the rate down and work from there,i think that timeline is very achievable and that might be just weeks.
Report Dotchinite April 29, 2020 4:52 PM BST
You dont seem to consider the human suffering letting all these business go bust would cause and the shortfall in revenues needed to pay pensions, welfare and NHS.

If as you say the timeline was weeks then yes your option is fine. Im merely pointing out there is a point where shutting down will no longer be viable.
Report lapsy pa April 29, 2020 5:00 PM BST
Your alternative won't work, people will get it,the NHS will be overrun,no one will go out as 1sttime says when they see pictures in the media.

I'm not sure how you are proposing to get the economy back, in what way can it?
It is a pandemic, you catch it off people, mask everyone up and a strict 2 metres?
That would work to some extent but still won't be a pre covid economy by a long way.
