The problem with appointing some random African to run an international agency is you just know it will end in disaster.
What sort of joke organisation would
a) appoint Robert Mugabe as a goodwill ambassador
b) deny Taiwan's existence as a separate country
c) praise China and specifically Xi for response to outbreak.

They are a discredited and almost certainly totally corrupt organisation and every right minded country should follow Trump's lead and cut their funding.

Commencing with a comment that attacks someone's place of birth is insufficient for an intelligent debate.
Therefore, please right down a description of their purpose and then explain where they are failing to meet that purpose.

He is not just random African.

He has history of denying outbreaks of Cholera.

China's response to the outbreak is worthy of praise. I am talking about the measures they took to get on top of it early, not their lying about it or covering it up. The WHO as far as I am aware have never commented on China's transparency or lack of it, it's not their job to do that and it would be foolish when they rely on China for info about the virus.

The denial of Taiwan's existence is down to China's power at UN level. The WHO is an arm of the UN. Not a new thing, the US has been using its power to get countries to back its proposals for decades, with economic threats for failure to comply.

The WHO chief is dodgy as fook and has been in bed with China for a long time. He has a long-standing relationship with them from his days as an Ethiopian politician and China investing billions there. I'm sure the Chinese have plenty of dirt on him and that's enough to get him to dance to their tune. Way of the political world, unfortunately.

Angoose your politics might be different from mine ,but I've often agreed with the gist of your posts however you're being holier than thou to support a representative from a tinpot African country heading an international agency. Perhaps in a hundred years or so Africa will have dealt with its smothering corruption and have lost its third world status however until that time comes it's ridiculous to appoint such a person to head what should be a worthwhile agency. You know as well as me that most of Africa is a cesspool riddled with corruption ;why else is there so much poverty after so many billions have been pumped in.We all know it has been diverted into Swiss bank  accounts.

Having lived and worked in several countries in Africa, I have more first hand knowledge of the culture of corruption that is prevalent within areas of African society than most in the UK.

And it is no exaggeration to state that I have placed my life in danger by attempting to break elements of the circle of corruption that existed within the organizations where I was deployed by my employer.

But what I also experienced, was an overwhelming majority of decent, hard working people who simply wanted a more equitable and just society for them and their children. And I have experienced this in every country I have ever visited.

So, if in stating my views, I come across as "holier than thou", I make no apologies for that.

I certainly do not view myself as "holier than thou", I believe that I am highly practical and pragmatic.
I also strive for high standards for myself, my family, and in wider society.

Of course, anonymous internet forums are far from being the ideal medium in which to gain a true sense of individual contributors.
You can't see the poster, you can't read their body language, you can't easily follow up and clarify points that may have generated unintended understandings.

In fact, attempts to follow up and clarify often simply results in a reinforcement of a distorted interpretation of the views of others.
Precisely the opposite of what was intended.

Such is the nature of the medium.

An excellent post Angoose and I entirely agree that the absence of body language ,intonation , facial expression and other 'soft' clues can easily create a distorted picture when relying solely on words on a page . My beef isn't with the millions of hard working decent people you refer to ,it is with those at the top of the pyramid in positions of power that I have a problem with. Until the countries of the dark continent attain Governments with levels of corruption on a par with those of Western Europe in particular it's a joke to appoint their toothless representatives to head international agencies as they can't possibly exercise the necessary clout .

posy, thanks for taking the time to come back and pass comment, it is very much appreciated.
And all done in a civil manner, many forum contributors would do well to also adopt such a policy.

I have a lot of sympathy for the average citizen in a country such as Nigeria.

They are truly victims of widescale corruption, and I had many long discussions with some of them who were not happy that I ensured that the company deducted the full rate of income tax from their salaries.

They pointed out that it would not be spent on things that it really ought to, and that government officials would divert substantial sums for their own personal benefit.

Whilst having sympathy for that argument, it did not justify the company to deliberately break the laws of the land.

The only "advice" that I could offer them was that it was largely up to Nigerians to sort out the problems of Nigeria.
Not of much practical help, I know, but you don't fight corruption by becoming corrupt yourself.

Anyway, my time in such countries is in the past.
Sadly, I suspect that the situation hasn't improved too much, but you have to maintain the believe that things can be changed for the better.
