Not sure if he is under too much pressure, but the last few days he is just looking a right plum and out of his depth.

Like telling a journalist they were wrong about the 25,000 tests by mid April he promised. Did he not think anyone would look back and just check it.

Some idiot questioner on the select committee (I assume it was a labour variety of chump) was angrily asking if Hancock could guarantee every single person would get any ppe, from any setting, at any time they needed it without fail. These people are a disgrace.

Why aren't NHS workers taking the tests when they are being invited to, a much more important and pertinent question. The answer is an uncomfortable one for some of our much vaunted heroes.

NHS bosses are preparing to ask doctors and nurses to work without full-length gowns when treating Covid-19 patients as hospitals across England are set to run out of supplies within hours.

The guidance will be a reversal of Public Health England (PHE) guidelines stipulating that full-length waterproof surgical gowns, designed to stop coronavirus droplets getting into someone’s mouth or nose, should be worn for all high-risk hospital procedures.

In a significant U-turn, NHS England is set to advise frontline staff to wear a flimsy plastic apron when gowns have run out, in a move that doctors and nurses fear may lead to more of them contracting the virus and ultimately put lives at risk.

NHS England is finalising the guidance, which Prof Keith Willett – who is leading its response to the coronavirus pandemic – will send to all 217 trusts on Friday or Saturday.

It will set out options for what frontline staff should do when they cannot access gowns. They will include hospitals which still have gowns lending each other batches of them, wearing coveralls – one-piece items of personal protective equipment (PPE) which cover the whole body – and using plastic aprons as alternatives.

Hancock was specifically asked about gowns this morning, he chose to mislead the select committee.

So you will have seen him say specifically that gowns are a particular pressure point. So why are you deliberately misrepresenting it?

He also said they were expecting a 85K delivery today.
By:

When: 17 Apr 20 17:14
Yes he did, and wouldn't that have been the perfect opportunity for him to say that a memo was going to be issued to change the guidance on their use?

Yes, it would have been.
But he didn't.

The memo has now been released.

Cider, I can fully appreciate the difficulties that they are experiencing, I have no doubt that many people are working very long hours to resolve these difficult problems.

Therefore, if he had taken the opportunity to state that they are likely to have to backtrack on their guidance regarding the use of gowns, then I am sure that the members of the committee would have understood.

But he didn't, he chose not to tell them and I find it very unlikely that the discussion wasn't already underway to change the guidance.

Do you think that the discussion to change the guidance only commenced after the meeting ended ?

you seriously think he's going to announce an important change in ppe guidance on a skype chat? ffs Cry It's not the minister's remit anyway.

I'm no expert in health ppe but these gowns are not for a care home setting I don't believe.

I spoke to my father today who told me of a neighbours wife who visited a hospital earlier this week.

She wore a mask that she had purchased off the internet.
At the hospital, a nurse asked her where she git the mask a sit was better than the one that she had.

Be open and honest.

You may not believe me when I say this, but I actually think Hancock has been doing a much better job of communicating since he came back after his bout COVID-19. Then he goes and does this.

And of course I expect him to be open and honest with the select committee, that's what it is for.
It is called scrutiny.

As Health Secretary, Matt Hancock is in charge of all areas of health policy with a particular focus on overall financial control and oversight of all NHS delivery and performance.

The Secretary of State will also lead on all aspects of mental health, championing patient safety and driving forward the Prime Minister’s agenda.

You don't believe they are for a care home setting, why not? if patients in the care home have covid surely you don't expect them to wear a rubbish bag?  there has to be similar guidance.

As they are for use when people are receiving treatment in a hospital, ie ICU.

'Deplaster', I'd almost the same thought, but a tad more civil eg what a plonker? Who's in charge of Health and Social Care? Could he have ordered PPE in late January/early Feb, and not when there was a scramble eg end of Feb/early March? His response when questioned by the former Health Secretary Mr Hunt now the Chair of the Commons health select committee on testing, etc, was unsure, not concise, a rather vague for any tv audience.

The bloke is totally out of his depth leading the Health Department.

Semantics. He was asked some very specific questions on a very narrow topic and chose to withhold highly significant information from a select committee.

You don't seem to understand angoose. The change of advice this evening would not have been down to him. He would have known they were running low, which he confirmed. But not what the medical advice to the medics would have been.
