The evidence is South Korea, Hong Kong & Singapore where mask wearing is almost universal.
There is case for Sadiq Khan being All Mouth, No Trousers......so I'm not defending him in general just on this specific point.

The mask I've been wearing came from the Home Bargains and is probably more a dust mask.....next time I venture out may use a scarf instead.

Why do we not know if the use of masks help during a Pandemic. We had a huge exercise in 2016. The prospect of a flu Pandemic starting in China has known to be a bigger risk than Nuclear War and Terrorism.
If I had to travel on the Tube I would wear a mask and I would be reassured if others did too and wore gloves. I would also like to see hand sanitizer at stations and platforms.

He was saying he is following government / National health advice.

I think it's the 'compulsory' word which gives me the shivers more than anything. It always does.

if face masks work and the goal is some sort of herd immunity the advice should surely not to be wearing them, no one will be building up any immunity

I would imagine that if face masks were widely available or easily obtainable for everyone, then the advice would have been to wear them at all times.
The fact that they weren't has led to the advice that they aren't that beneficial imo. I don't believe they aren't that beneficial, I don't see how they wouldn't be. It is about not advising something that you can't provide and not creating panic, not incurring the wrath of your population, not making yourself look out of your depth or hopelessly unprepared, rather than what is the best advice.

My Masks have a filtered Valve Won , Which allows air in and out , quite tight fitting as well

so all the vulnerable people on a longer lock dow,those younger and healthy who supposedly could shake it off,all wearing masks which will stop them getting it,

might be ok if you are healthy case, restricted breathing shouldn't affect you if worn for a short period

They looked like they were going to go balls out with AB testing , Kits at boots and on Amazon
then two days later it was not being done

They do not want the public to buy masks as it will highlight how useless the authorities have been in procurement.

The convolutions necessary for safe mask wearing are totally beyond most of us. And there's a real danger of a false sense of security amongst those people who feel it's themselves they are protecting. For every thoughtless person who pushes too close in the supermarket aisle, or coughs without properly covering their mouth, there are ten in danger of being infected with Paranoiavirus complacentimaximus who is swaddled in cloth, crosses the road if they see anybody coming and reprimands people who let their kids off the lead.
