Just been listening to the radio as I did my morning stroll
This is what a top doc said
Because a lot of patients decline rapidly they take a lot of people on oxygen to intensive care as a precaution, not just Boris.
You stay there on oxygen until your levels stabilise
If they don't stabilise on oxygen then you go on a large face mask called a CPAP
Then if that doesn't work and levels drop to the mid 80s re oxygen and no improvement that is when ventilation is required
Once a person is ventilated then recovery is 50/50
So the next 12/24 hours is vital!
IF you do stabilise on any of the above then your body has beat the virus and you will recover
You can't relapse after your body has gone through this process
The reason they are sent to ICU is because that original process can happen very quickly and they need to be prepared

Beginning in early February 2020, doctors in China have increasingly been using ECMO as an adjunct support for patients presenting with acute viral pneumonia associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19); when, even after ventilation, the blood oxygenation levels remain too low to sustain the patient.[6]

The initial reports indicate that it is assisting in restoring patients' blood oxygen saturation and reducing fatalities among the approximately 3% of severe cases where it has been utilized.

As an analogy, the doctor said it's like trying to inflate a damaged tyre. At this stage it increases chances of heart attack and other organ failure.  It's extremely scary how fast a person can deteriorate once it hits the lungs.

Boris is in one of the top hospitals though

Hi jucel, that was the chap, Dr Al, he did break it down well. But that's good news for Boris if the hospital has got the top equipment. Sounds like we need more of them.

And your're absolutely right Whisper, I should have said no-one wants to get it, not just people with underlying issues. The healthy and vulnerable need to be protected alike. I have a light asthma condition and lungs that are not great for my age (and always suffer with my chest for weeks to months on end with just about any infection) so I certainly fear catching it.

What worries me is, once it's declared 'gone', it won't be gone for good, will it? We know how stains of cold/flu viruses can come back round the following years. People who have isolated this year may still be vulnerable in later years. Let's hope they do find a vaccine. And that the WHO and world governments have a serious talk with China about their wet markets, plus Africa re bush meat practices.

From my last link :

The lab-escape theory had been circulating on social media and various blogs for weeks, but gained considerable visibility in a New York Post article in late February. In it, Steven Mosher, a social scientist and the president of the Population Research Institute in Front Royal, Virginia, summarizes why he believes SARS-CoV-2 may have been accidentally spread by China’s National Biosafety Laboratory at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, where researchers have studied bat coronaviruses.

In the article, Mosher describes several lines of reasoning, namely, that the lab is less than 10 miles away from the seafood market where a cluster of COVID-19 cases was first discovered, and that after the 2003 SARS outbreak, the SARS-CoV virus escaped from virology labs multiple times in China. He also describes how Chinese virologist and bioweapons expert Major General Chen Wei went to the Wuhan Institute of Virology with military scientists in January to study the new virus, which Mosher sees as a form of damage control.

Well said Whisper, we certainly will worry about each more from now, the elderly especially as you say. Funny about the hangovers. Have to say, I'd rather have a hangover than a virus any day, lol. I don't even like a cold. I've heard it said that it may have been here in December, and I did have very bad dose of something back then, took months for my chest to recover. But based on what we've seen, I don't think what I had was Covid; I would have been in far worse a state than I was, given the normal inefficiency of my lungs.

Can't comment on the lab escape theory Leopard, or any other man-made theories, but I bet one thing for sure: Mr Shrimpton is probably blaming it on the 'DVD' as usual. lol.

Have you been taught any breathing exercises fink?

I remember I went on a dive holiday 20 odd years ago and gave up smoking 6 months before because I was told I would use the oxygen up quickly if I smoked and my dining would be brief. It is quite amazing breathing under water with scuba, getting a feel how to use oxygen efficiently.

Playing sport you are regularly gasping for air but learning when to get great lung fulls when play stops is an art. I know the pesky Chinese are not popular on the forums right now but they have studied and practised the art of breathing. They also have devised a method of breathing designed to improve your immune system. You breathe in for so many counts, hold for so many counts then exhale for so many counts.

They have even developed a breathing system incorporating internal organ massage. Very impressive I am constantly surprised Western Medicine has not caught up or caught on. I was surprised they closed the parks in London. People need fresh air.

Boris Johnson does not have pneumonia, Downing Street has said. Until now ministers and No 10 have refused to give a clear answer to this question. But asked if the PM has been diagnosed with pneumonia, the spokesman said: “That is not the case, no.”

The spokesman said that Johnson was “stable” overnight and “remains in good spirits”. In a statement about his condition in intensive care, the prime minister’s spokesman said:

The prime minister has been stable overnight and remains in good spirits. He is receiving standard oxygen treatment and breathing without any other assistance. He has not required mechanical ventilation or non-invasive respiratory support.

Downing Street has signalled that it does not want to take up Donald Trump’s offer of experimental coronavirus drugs for Boris Johnson. Asked about this, the spokesman said:

We are confident that the prime minister is receiving the best possible care from the health service. Any treatment he receives is a matter for his doctors.

Rishi Sunak, the chancellor, would take over if Dominic Raab, the foreign secretary who is deputising for the PM, got ill, the spokesman said.

Raab does not have the authority to “hire and fire” people in government while he was deputising for the PM, the spokesman said.

Hey Whisper, thanks for that, that's great, I will definitely have a look at that. I've just come out of the songs quiz thread, so I'm gonna have a break & something to eat, but I'll definitely watch all of the vid later. You know, I thought about breathing exercises years ago, but was always pessimistic about it (and I'd read in journals like the New Scientist that once the damage was done it was done). Also never seemed to have the time or motivation. One of the reasons I stopped running was because I could never get enough air in to my lungs, especially if I went too fast (gasping), needing to stop and use my inhaler all the time. But this gives me new confidence, so thanks a million Whisper, this is great. Anything that can help is worth trying. And agree re the Chinese.
