I don't think this is a French problem, rather a care home one. There is one in Dublin with over 100 cases. I just think they are not the type of people who can do social distancing etc and the staff have less PPE than nurses. The UK still has to do the same as France and add in its figures from these too.

Spain as well.
Remember this from last week.... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-52014023 Coronavirus: Spanish army finds care home residents 'dead and abandoned' Spanish soldiers helping to fight the coronavirus pandemic have found elderly patients in retirement homes abandoned and, in some cases, dead in their beds, the defence ministry has said. Spanish prosecutors said an investigation had been launched. The military has been brought in to help disinfect care homes in Spain, one of Europe's worst hit countries. Meanwhile, an ice rink in Madrid is to be used as a temporary mortuary for Covid-19 victims, officials said. The virus is spreading very fast in Spain - the second worst-hit European country after Italy. On Tuesday, the health ministry announced that the number of deaths had risen by 514 in the past 24 hours - a daily record. A total of 2,696 people have now died and there are 39,637 confirmed cases. |

A CORONAVIRUS outbreak at a care home has left 13 people dead in just seven days.
Sources said the bug “swept through” 90-bed Burlington Court in Glasgow - despite bosses banning all visits to the care home. An insider said: “It’s just so sad. How do you deal with something like this? The staff are doing their best to cope.” The care home looks after OAPs and people with epilepsy, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s Disease. All the fatalities are being linked to Covid-19, although it is understood not all of the victims had been tested. Four Seasons Health Care, which runs the home, said two staff members were also being treated. It said: “With deep sadness we can confirm that 13 residents have passed away over the past seven days. “The focus is the ongoing care and protection of all our residents and our colleagues.” The Care Inspectorate said: “Our thoughts are with the loved ones of those affected.” |

In the UK average stay in a care home is between 2 and 3 years. By definition these are people unable to look after themselves, can't be without human to human contact, approaching the end of their time, most over 70 and likely to have underlying conditions. Most likely won't understand social distancing or won't care at this point in their life (my Nan passed away in a care home and while she was there other residents were frequently popping in to her room).

It is a sad fact that hospitals and care homes are probably the most likely places on earth to catch this virus. I'm not blaming anyone but I am just hoping that I don't get sick from some other disease that requires going to a hospital. I think I would opt to take my chances at home.

The residents, all with underlying health conditions, lived at Burlington Court Care Home.
Two of the care home's staff members are being treated in separate hospitals after testing positive for COVID-19. |

i can see quite a few carers abandoning these homes ...most of the carers are badly paid, poorly looked after and it won't be a terrible blow to them to lose their jobs either

Another 1,053 deaths in france today, escalating figures everywhere.
|
|
By:
France reported a further 7,788 cases today and a further 1,053 deaths.
That's three successive days that they've added more than a thousand to their fatality total. There were reports out of Spain of care homes being abandoned. |

Don't let it happen in the UK,act now.
There are 40 clusters in care homes in Ireland atm. All staff are to have their temp taken twice daily. Movement of staff minimised. PPE and oxygen to be provided to homes. Prevention and control teams being set up to liase with homes. Financial support to be provided. Fair point re carers being underpaid etc they have a duty to say they cannot cope at this time too though and won't be thought bad of. |

Let the "not so naughty" out of the jails as well, different meaning to "time" during this, surely happening though. They didn't get a death sentence.

they are waiting for you to go in with a serious 'condition' then finish you off with a co19

Thanks Moisok,a kind comment earlier today, in every workplace currently running a simple handheld tempature test before entering should be made compulsory imo, get the rate down and work from there.

Latest figures from France.
Deaths in hospital: 7,091 (+607) Deaths in nursing care homes: 3,237 (+820) Total deaths: 10,328 [ This image is no longer available. ] |

Those figures might be skewed. What if a care resident was moved to hospital and died there. I'd be shocked if care homes didn't account for at least 60%
Varadkar, Harris and Holohan have made some c*ck up of the Nursing home situation in Ireland. On March 10th, Holohan and Harris criticised homes for closing off visitations and stated they were over reacting. It was 50 homes (multiplied 5 fold in a week) 2 days ago with clusters.....now its 99 ffs Varadkar and Harris are absolute f**king 5cum Media are filth raising no questions on it. Mumbling how good we are flattening the curve even though there has been no increase in the rate of testing, hence why the daily rate of increase is dropping |

137 cases now in nursing homes in ireland
absolute 5hitshow |

So if one of your kids were working at a nursing home where the virus was raging would you be encouraging them to go in tomorrow? nothing is easy at the moment.
|
|
By:
You won't Potlis, hopefully has changed in that the staff have least adequate ppe now, they were struggling not that long ago.
It is a very sad situation and i'm not sure anyone has answers. Racingqueen just on the 4th of April i said there were 40 clusters in care homes in Ireland, that is now 150% up in the amount of homes, a huge rise, i know that is backdated from possibly up to say around 3 weeks ago. They seem to be getting tested which is imperative, are the UK testing their care home patients? Learn from Irelands mistake. How has it spread to so many homes? People going into them and not showing any symptons? Staff going to multiple homes? I have no idea but it is important to get an answer quick. |

Care homes for Old People are particularly vulnerable. The elderly are the most vulnerable to this virus.
They live on top of each other usually in the same building. When the virus gets into this environment, it just runs wild |
|
By:
Sure I have read of care homes in one country where staff abandoned residents and emergency services just found bodies on the floor. The concept of a plague can strike fear into anyone, would any of us welcome having to pick up someone from the floor knowing it could be deadly infectious ?

By:
That was evil Treetop those old people were just left to die
Plus younger people are not quite at the same risk of infection as the old unforgivable ![]() |

Just to confirm thats 137 separate nursing homes.
Testing is a farce in Ireland. Media hacks proclaiming the curve is being flattened which is simply untrue. The easiest way to flatten the curve is to do no testing and thats what Ireland are doing. Testing remains on average 1500 tests per day (so no wonder the daily % increase is dropping. Its simple maths, yet no hack seems to have rumbled it). Deaths and ICU occupancy continues upwards) and its clear the DOH and HSE are fudging figures by only releasing the amount of tests done on a weekly basis. Harris was proclaiming the aim was 15k tests in mid March. He's obviously too busy responding to letters from 6yo kids telling him what a great job he's doing and letting the nation know the Easter Bunny is still coming to actually do his job. Nursing homes and care settings were the core red light area in the health service where high death rates could be seen. The Irish government saw what happened in Italy and Spain and washed their hands of the Nursing homes. Harris and Holohans advice against closing visitation on March 10th was criminal |

Thanks RQ,
Basically for a simple comparison with UK i multiply Irelands numbers by 14,that is an unfair comparison as the population is obviously more dense in UK. On that,a similar amount of cases to UK though death rate would be 250ish, that is very weak as both have small levels of testing. On checking back it seems non essential visitation in care homes was applied on the 6th March, that is open to correction,i am not arguing against more being done more stringently earlier at all. I smiled re the Easter Bunny,it is hard for children not to be out playing particulary in the good weather, i think LV overall did ok,particulary in making sure everyone has enough to survive. I don't think a goverment in the world won't play it differently if they couldn't do it again, from what i heard there was an air of complacency last weekend, seems that is gone though with talk of a lockdown for up to a year. |
|
By:
Ah,i am with you now Racingqueen,it seems there was a ban on visiting on either 4th or 6th of March and that ban was lifted on the 10th,yes, a big mistake.

70 infections in Cavan Hospital.
I am fully convinced now Hospitals and care homes are causing the spread and doing nothing to stop it. It is disgraceful medical staff are being allowed to continue working without appropriate PPE equipment and proper procedure |
|
By:
Now "promising" to test everyone in a care home situation, unreal.
|

Tests for "everyone who needs one".
Not quite the same as testing everyone and we know that asymptomatic carriers can pass the virus to others. [ This image is no longer available. ] |
