Almost as many as Spain.

Are these people who died of Covid-19, a coronavirus or had a coronavirus or actually Covid-19 when they died due to something else?

Need some clarification on what exactly the numbers are.
Report tobermory April 1, 2020 2:45 PM BST
You you will never get that clarification.

Perhaps be able to deduce it when the total number of deaths in 2020 is known
Report tobermory April 1, 2020 2:46 PM BST
"Today’s increase reflects a combination of a true increase in numbers, along with additional cases reported from the previous reporting period."

Which dopey minister will pull the short straw and have to lie through their teeth to try and explain this figure tonight? Plain
Report sageform April 1, 2020 2:48 PM BST
They were due to do some catch up this week as some health authorities take much longer to report than others and people dying at home have not been included. It is still a very serious figure. I would be willing to have a small wager that mortality in the elderly population next winter will be at an all time low.

UK coronavirus death rate shoots up by another 50% as 563 die in ONE DAY taking total to 2,392

How is that a 50 % increase it was 400 plus  yesterday ?

Has abbot got a job doing the figures for the sun ??

Figures bad enough without these rags punting them ..

This first wave isn't near peaking yet and the NI health minister is already warning us about the 2nd wave for f ucks sake.
Report A_T April 1, 2020 2:51 PM BST
so far 1000 deaths since last Friday (the last day of the week as far as ONS counts are concerned) - so with 4 days still to go this week this week should be significantly higher than the average for previous weeks at the same time of year.
Report Petraco April 1, 2020 2:52 PM BST
Given the salaries that civil servants are paid it seems unbelievable that when they have to produce one figure they manage to make it so difficult and open to interpretation as to make it worthless.

Drain the swamp!

They've taken the daily figures, 381 v 563, 48% higher.
Cumulative increase is 31%, 1,789 to 2,352.

@DHSCgovuk

UPDATE on coronavirus (#COVID19) testing in the UK:

As of 9am 1 April, a total of 152,979 people have been tested of which 29,474 tested positive.

As of 5pm on 31 March, of those hospitalised in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus, 2,352 have sadly died.

^

So only people in hospital counted.

But is unclear what 'tested positive for coronavirus' means.

The common cold is a coronavirus? I wish they would stop interchanging between the generic term 'coronavirus' with this specific strain called Covid-19.
Report A_T April 1, 2020 3:03 PM BST
total deaths might actually drop because the usual bugs won't spread as much
Report Angoose April 1, 2020 3:04 PM BST
IT, the first line of the message provides the clarification that you are calling for.
But you already knew that.
Report InsiderTrader April 1, 2020 3:12 PM BST
Angoose so we are 100% sure all these people that they say have tested positive for 'coronavirus' have the SARS-CoV-2 virus that lead to them actually having Covid-19?
Report sageform April 1, 2020 3:15 PM BST
As I understand it anyone who dies of an existing terminal illness, but also tests positive for covid 19, is counted in the stats. They want to keep frightening the public in order to keep the numbers indoors as high as possible. The main objective as they keep saying is to flatten the curve and keep new infections at a level that the NHS can cope with.
Report InsiderTrader April 1, 2020 3:16 PM BST
Just to be clear SARS-CoV-2 is the type of coronavirus this is and Covid-19 is the disease that SAR-CoV-2 can cause.
Report A_T April 1, 2020 3:23 PM BST
Just to be clear SARS-CoV-2 is the type of coronavirus this is and Covid-19 is the disease that SAR-CoV-2 can cause.

ONS records for 7 days ending march 20 has 103 "deaths involving COVID-19" in England and Wales - not sure how this compares for the total for UK given daily by press release
