Last night I watched the various BBC news bulletins and programmes. WTF is wrong with them?

I gave up counting use of the words 'Massive' or 'Huge' or 'Alarming' after about five minutes. These were mostly in conjunction with the reporting of the jump in number of deaths from CV19. They seem oblivious to the panic and worry they cause and even more oblivious to how anyone with an elementary knowledge of maths could see what the daily death rate this week would roughly be from the rate of last week and the week before's infections.

It has now become standard for most news channels, especially the BBC, to report the number of deaths and to ignore the number of new infections. Sad though the deaths are, they will be in direct relation to the number of infections already reported.

Hence, the number of new infections is the most critical figure because that tells us the spread of the infection and its rate of progress. It will also eventually tell us its rate of slowing down.

But, of course, the BBC are not interested in common sense and proper reporting. They are enjoying the drama and the panic they are instilling in people.

It is crucial to remember that the death rate will always lag behind the infection rate. And so, once the rate of infection begins to fall the death rate will be at its height. But, by then, the BBC will be completely consumed by the death rate.

I have come to dislike the BBC over the past few years and now I hate them. They are negative, do not care about balance unless it is instilling 'balance' on behalf of a tiny, minority group - in which case they lean so far towards said group it is laughable.

absolutely ludicrous report on sky last night saying would be 20000 deaths by mid april if the rate keeps doubling every 3 days. not a chance in hell once you start getting deaths in the high 100s. scandalous scaremongering

After this far into it anyone who doesn't understand what exponential means (assuming they didn't before) is too stupid to be a journalist but the media seems full of them. Every day is likely to be higher than than the next, we knew all this. And any death rate will "lag" infection rate. We knew this.

I see that egotistical ex-BBC d1ck Robert Peston (held my man responsible for Northern Rock going bust with his outrages scaremongering coverage) who tried to put the fear of god into us all 13 years ago is now in full on "me-me-me-me-it's my chance to shine" mode again in this new crisis. What you describe above isn't new. The BBC trying to big up stories in a reckless manner is not a new thing.

"I have come to dislike the BBC over the past few years and now I hate them. They are negative, do not care about balance unless it is instilling 'balance' on behalf of a tiny, minority group - in which case they lean so far towards said group it is laughable. ""

Look at the way they, in their outright war against Brexit, jumped hysterically on every scare story about THAT in the last 4 years. They don't give a **** about responsible coverage.

I don't watch the BBC anymore, I had enough, they've went too far for too long. I too loathe them. Aerial unplugged, license cancelled. They can go **** themself and hopefully get cut down to 10th of the size (and salaries). I see the BBC who openly despise half the country have renewed their "30 minutes hate" left wing propaganda "The Mash Report", such one sided Woke anti Brexit hate mongering sh1te it would make Goebbels blush. I'm guessing Comrade Boyle will get his slot for more of the same, as will "Mock anyone not Remainer and Left wing" and "Do I hate half the country for you" etc. I've made the right choice.

He took leaked information about the fact Northern Rock were having dealings with the Bank of England and shouted "panic" loudly in ludicrous scaremongering broadcasts causing a huge bank run the very next morning. He 100% caused the bank run, this is a fact. He totally preempted the BoE from any plan they had to shore NR up that would have stopped such a bank run, that could have been presented later in a calm manner after it was done.

He also, and I remember this clear as day as I was sitting there almost shouting at the TV at the smug c**t through the financial crisis, seemed totally disinterested in reassuring people in NR (or elsewhere) that their savings (up to £20k or whatever so the vast majority of customers) were covered by a cast iron government guarantee so there was no need to panic as they couldn't lose it.

Instead the ar*e was enjoying his little moment in the sun whipping people into a frenzy.  I thought independently at the time he was being a dick and many others thought the same thing. Google it.

From what I've heard of his antics in this crisis he's trying to turn it into the Robert Peston moment mk 2.

"their savings (up to £20k or whatever so the vast majority of customers) were covered by a cast iron government guarantee so there was no need to panic as they couldn't lose it."

A responsible journalist would have said in a calm voice maybe a couple times in the broadcast "I repeat, your savings are covered by a solid legal government guarantee up to £XX,XXX so need to panic". My recollection is he never mentioned this once as I remembering even now being so angry at him at the time for not doing so.

I suppose Peston thought he had a "scoop" and didn't care about acting professionally, it was his moment to shine.
Echoed later by the BBCs outrageous disgusting handling of Cliff Richard, when they got a leaked "scoop", essentially blackmailed the police, then went OTT * 1,000,000 with their "scoop", tried to destroy him, and ended up in court for it. (While of course giving virtually no coverage of r@pe gangs in areas of England, for "Woke BBC" type reasons, but I digress)

The BBC made a massive issue of the 13yo who died from Covid this morning. Another bit of propaganda to keep everyone cowering in front of the TV. It is probably the right tactic but it is a bit transparent by now. Meanwhile life in Rural Somerset is fine. A Swallow on my telephone line this morning, Blackcaps singing in the garden. Only the lack of Racing on TV has made much change to my life.

I agree 100% with you about Peston JC, at the time I heard he was leaked info from a connection in the Treasury confidentially but rushed to make his name,a total shyster and I hate the sight of him on TV since then. Why the govt indulge questions from people hell bent on tripping up those striving to inform the public I will never understand.

It's not just what the OP points out - that would be ghoulish and bad enough in the current circumstances.

Has anyone...ANYONE on any of the major news channelled quaetioned why we have crashed the economy and seen the biggest clampdown on civil liberties, in the space of a fortnight and the effect this will have on society? On the possible number of deaths this may cause (since they are so keen to wildly speculate about the number of deaths due to Covid 19 - when they actually mean the number of deaths of people WITH Covid 19)? On why the 'cure' may be worse than the 'disease'?

See the SNP has suspended trial by jury and the freedom of information act in Scotland.

A Nationalist party dismantling democracy and the legal system because it's for the greater good..... now where have we heard that before?

What next? Will they annex Northumbria cos there's a load of Scots living there.

As for the suspension of the Freedom of Information Act?

Damn! just when we were going to be treated to the uber-giggle of who knew what and when in the Alex Salmond debacle.

Good, I am glad I am not the only one then!

I speak from a little experience here in as much, way back in 1976 as a very raw 16 year old I spent almost a year as 'trainee reporter' (or cub reporter) on a good old fashioned east-end of London local rag. I was made redundant soon after passing the probation period and having signed my indentures.

Sadly for me, a big US publisher bought the paper and turned it into a free-sheet. 60% of the staff were laid off within months, starting with me. The size of the publisher meant they did not give a toss about my legal rights under my indentures and I had no financial means to fight them - there was none of the no win, no fee stuff back then!

Anyhow, that year has always stayed with me. Although much of it was spent as a general dogsbody making tea, filing, going to the bakers for rolls etc etc, I really saw just how much importance back then was given to balanced, fact-checking, reporting.

Today, it looks exactly the opposite to me. Whip everything up into a frenzy, miss out anything that downplays the story (even if it is what sensible people want to hear), make stuff up if gaps exist (or if there is no news) and generally behave like a**eholes.

To end, I am now convinced Laura Kunnsberg (or whatever he name is) from the BBC was employed because she is such a sneering old c*w. If she ever had to interview me, I'd have to resist lamping her one within two minutes of the interview beginning!

The BBC news departments are actually run, and worked upon, by children now who just don't have enough world experience to fulfill what a journalist SHOULD be doing.

Rant over...until the next bulletin.

Hanx...

Bang on about the cure becoming worse than the problem.

It is surprising how many of us think this.

Trashing the world economies, starting with the UK, will mean far less spending on health services in the future - and that must lead to more deaths in the long run.

A media-induced panic up has meant sensible, rational and long-term thinking over this terrible virus has been abandoned.

Holding this view DOES NOT mean I take the deaths lightly. Each one is terrible for the individual and their loved ones. BUT governments need to govern for the medium- to long-term and for society as a whole, present and future.

Yet a complete fear of being lampooned on social media has made them knee-jerk reactionaries to everything.

I keep saying it but IF this virus does not go the way the modelling suggests, then we might see an abandonment of current policy back to 'herd immunity'. It might be too late by then, though, because letting the virus do its worst AFTER trashing the economies will be the worst of both worlds.

I do hope I am proved wrong.

This nonsense  has been going on for a long time.
Every Brexit bulletin was about the sky falling in and oxygen running out.
Every weather forecast is of biblical floods , apocalyptic storms.

Since they stopped doing proper informative news bulletins , this rolling news is as tedious as watching paint dry.

Ultimately there is only so much economic damage we can inflict by a shutdown. Thats just reality. The question is at what level does the cost become too much.
