1.  What are you, a book critic all of a sudden?

2.  I don't think you should have added the bicarbonate of soda.

Report hfink May 29, 2020 5:51 PM BST
I agree Baphornet, great film, one of the all-time best. My father also loves that one. I'm also tickled by the fact that it has an anagram of:

Wild Thief - stars Cagney
Report Baphornet May 29, 2020 5:52 PM BST
HGS: i cannot tell you how good it is

nice one finky; i shall remember that
Report HGS May 29, 2020 5:53 PM BST
Am I imagining this? Do bits of it get played in the Home Alone films or is that another film altogether? 'Keep the change you filthy animal!' Laugh
Report Baphornet May 29, 2020 5:55 PM BST
i watched it 1st with my dear mummy; it affected me greatly as i was one likkle twot at the time
Report i_agree_with_nick May 29, 2020 5:55 PM BST
Pat O'Brien was the priest, iirc.
Report hfink May 29, 2020 5:56 PM BST
^ I used it in a film anagram quiz on here a few weeks back.
I've obviously not watched it for quite a while, else would have remembered the quote (well, had a better chance of it anyway! Never trust my krap memory these days! Grin) I must watch it again, surely must be available for rent on Prime.
Report Baphornet May 29, 2020 5:56 PM BST

Report hfink May 29, 2020 6:00 PM BST
Also not seen Home Alone, but seem to remember someone else discussing that HGS, possibly on here. Not sure what the outcome was though...
Report HGS May 29, 2020 6:00 PM BST
Not on neftlix or prime or sky library.
Report hfink May 29, 2020 6:02 PM BST
Ah, cheers Baphor. I'll take a look around on the weekend anyway, see what's available...
Report HGS May 29, 2020 6:03 PM BST
Just googled. The film in Home Alone is Angels With Filthy Souls, and Angles With Filthier Souls in Home Alone 2, so, no. Both not real.
Report hfink May 29, 2020 6:03 PM BST
^ Ah! That answers that then! Cheers HGS. Strange, you'd think that film would at least be available for rent...these streaming companies need to sort themselves out!
Report HGS May 29, 2020 6:03 PM BST
Talking Pictures might be our best bet one day.
Report hfink May 29, 2020 6:04 PM BST
Ha, maybe copyright costs prevented them using it, so they made something up with a close name! Happy
Report hfink May 29, 2020 6:08 PM BST
This one might be too difficult and totally unfair (as it might be the only time someone's quoted it! Grin)

But it amused me when I heard it and it stuck in the mind (for a change!)  Another oldie (1940's) :

"Go milk a duck!"

Thought you may have some recognition of it Baphor, as you're excellent on the classics. But will reveal for everyone else, as it's perhaps a wee bit obscure, and not exactly a quote that appears in quizzes a lot! Happy

That's good news, one for the weekend then...(I'll double-check if that quote still appears at the end of the film WinkGrin)

Laugh i read a book about Burt Lancaster tother day, & he recalled a time he hid Kirk Douglas's lifts just before they hit a big one to one. "Douglas was really pîssed" Burt recalledLaugh
Report hfink May 29, 2020 6:31 PM BST
Laugh  So Kirky was probably a lot shorter than he looked on screen as well then, lol.

Do you read a lot of cinema books Baphor? I used to read a fair few, until the gambling bug took over Sad
Report Baphornet May 29, 2020 6:36 PM BST
oh god yes! Infuriates my good ladyGrin Lots of rumours about Burt apparently; although i suspect that was more todo with him being anightmare to work with, & a deep love of art & MichelangeloWink
Report hfink May 29, 2020 6:48 PM BST
Lol. Yes, I do recall hearing some 'strange' stories about Burt, and some of his preferences, and his behaviour at parties. I probably heard that on a documentary somewhere. The biog channel on Sky used to be very good, and then they strangely got rid of it.
I think he's great in some roles though. I especially liked The Swimmer, which by all accounts he had to partly finance himself in order to get it finished (all those details are no doubt in the book that you read, of course). And various production problems inc. change of director half-way through. But I still think it came out great; I really like it, despite it not being perfect (whatever 'perfection' may be!)
Report Baphornet May 29, 2020 6:55 PM BST
aye he apparently was not a great swimmer; which would of course have led to a few delays for resuscitation & massaging of limbs
Report hfink May 29, 2020 7:08 PM BST
Ah, that's a surprising and interesting piece of info. I just assumed he was good at everything, what with his gymnastic ability and apparent general fitness. Well there go, the movies can you make you believe anything!  Happy

Report hfink May 30, 2020 5:37 PM BST
Funny thing, that film came up only a couple of weeks ago, when discussing films to watch during the lockdown with a work colleague...and still, my power of recall is terrible...notorious for it in work!
Report Baphornet May 30, 2020 5:42 PM BST
another film quote above
Report hfink May 30, 2020 5:45 PM BST
Was indeed. A number of years since I've seen it now, so no doubt another reason the quote took a while to connect, esp with my rubbish memory, lol. And by one of my favourite directors too. Bought a book on him some years back, lent it to somebody and not seen it since! Have some DVDs like that too, you lend them out and some people just never return them Sad

Report hfink May 30, 2020 6:24 PM BST
Ah, right. Nice one Baphor, not one I've seen. But aware of Stevens of course. My parents were big fans of 'Giant', so that was always a 'sit down and watch' event whenever that was on tv!

Report hfink May 30, 2020 6:33 PM BST
Ah yes, cheers Baphor. That was a very good film, really enjoyed that one, a very effective thriller. Good early role Burt.
Report Baphornet May 30, 2020 6:38 PM BST
Burt was 32 0or33? when he made his screen debut; i think the film above with his 5th or 6th. Very fortunate to have such great films to start off in
Report hfink May 30, 2020 6:44 PM BST
Wow, that's quite old for a screen debut, I suppose. I guess everyone looked younger in black & white! Also remember seeing him The Killers, so yes definitely started his career in some very good films.
Report Baphornet May 30, 2020 6:46 PM BST
well that was his 1st film, finky well done
Report Baphornet May 30, 2020 6:48 PM BST
he was oldish to start because (as you know) he was involved in circus activity for a long time; & then along came WW2
Report hfink May 30, 2020 6:52 PM BST
A good one to start off with!  Of his later ones, have always had a liking for The Gypsy Moths. But I like most of Frankenheimer's stuff, and have probably watched The French Connection II more than the first FC. But big fan of both.
Report Baphornet May 30, 2020 6:53 PM BST
The Manchurian Candidate probably my fav
Report Baphornet May 30, 2020 6:54 PM BST
although 'The Birdman' with Burt another
Report hfink May 30, 2020 6:59 PM BST
Those two good shouts too. The latter also a big favourite of my father's.

Yes, of course that would explain (his late-ish start in movies). But always looked for his age I guess, as borne out by The Swimmer, when he was starting to get on a wee bit!
Report hfink May 30, 2020 7:02 PM BST
