I will be this week, must be high chance of it being infected all the stackers, packers trays etc etc what about fruit and veg no one ever mentions it..
Report leif March 28, 2020 4:30 PM GMT
I suppose this must be an advantage of buying frozen, or freezing fresh meat etc. Kill the bugger stone dead.

4 cans of Branston beans sat in the freezer might look odd, but saves on the effort of washing the blighters.
Report thegiggilo March 28, 2020 4:35 PM GMT
Branston bean lolly pop is that what it's come to..
Report Sica Dan March 28, 2020 4:38 PM GMT
Fruit such as oranges etc  can be washed same as with your hands.

Immediately place all of your purchases in to the microwave upon unpacking.
Place it on to its highest setting, set for twenty five minutes, and all will be well.
Report Akak March 28, 2020 4:43 PM GMT
Angoose, there are some on here who will do that.Wink

Bloke on 5 live an hour ago said freezing doesn't kill the virus.
Report Darlo Bantam March 28, 2020 4:47 PM GMT
That's because it was born in a freezer in a Wuhan lab! Wink
Report Jack Hacksaw March 28, 2020 4:48 PM GMT
If stuff can't be removed from packaging of immediately washed, we have got a 'quarantine' area for new food or drink brought into the house.

Leave for 3+ days...

I forgot the final step.

Unplug the microwave, carry it and its contents outside, place the lot in to the nearest available skip.

I think it's important to wash your hands immediately after a visit to the supermarket before unpacking, then again after unpacking. The former to rid-of the virus asap similarly, the latter. Also, I believe the virus have short shelf life. It also minimises the risk of infection if one touches one's face or nose.

I heard the carrier bags may need to be dispose of too, but stand to be corrected.

Wash salad fruit , Anything being boiled or roasted wash hand after handling , same when putting stuff away ..
Report impossible123 March 28, 2020 5:59 PM GMT
I must have washed my hands a good 20x plus a day, and I'm hibernating. I only shop once a week.

The advice is wash your hands after touching any surface and after prepping food, I guess.
Report wolf3011 March 28, 2020 6:15 PM GMT
if you are washing your hands 20 times a day in your own house, you sound like you have mental health issues tbh
Report Darlo Bantam March 28, 2020 6:19 PM GMT
Yes, but this scenario and all the scare stories and all the advice is going to put health anxiety and generalised anxiety through the roof.

I think the virus can remain longer in the fridge or freezer.

We bring things left outside the door in carrying gloves and quarantine new items for 3 days.

I had to break this rule a couple of days ago as I was desperate for a beer that had just arrived about 8 hours before.

Poured it wearing gloves.

Chucked the can.

Took gloves off.

Washed hands for 20 seconds.

I drink a lot of beer which is now ordered in boxes of ten, twelve or more. Cans or bottles not fussed.

My take is the companies making the beer have automated bottling/canning lines which aren't touched by humans. Not sure what happens at the packaging end but I guess that it's also done automatically. Once inside packaging it should be safe. If it's in cardboard which mine is if you leave it for a day or two, not in the fridge, it should be safe.
Report Charlie March 28, 2020 8:13 PM GMT
Also not sure how long the process of bottling to retailing is so may not be an immediate problem but may be something to consider in the future. Generally though I consider it a safe product.

I now have a supply of 36 Heinekiens and 18 Fosters under my desk now.

My daughter ordered me a further 24 cans from Spain to be delivered in 3-5 days.

That should see me through the first few months. Beyond that I am not sure.

Unless you're in the at risk group, I find all this very strange. I went to Tescos today observing social distancing as best I could and will continue to go shopping. I was served by a teenage girl who must have been doing an 8 hour shift serving hundreds of people and look on here to find grown men too terrified to leave the house getting home deliveries. If you live with a vulnerable person/ or are vulnerable fair enough but if war broke out, I'm glad Im not in the trenches with grown men washing their hands 20 times a day at home sh1tting themselves in terror

wolf,

My wife is in a high risk group. Been isolated for 13 days. Could be a year or more to go. Who knows at this point.
Report wolf3011 March 29, 2020 12:39 AM GMT
I think we will all end up getting it eventually and if people have partners/family in the high risk group I understand caution but I live alone and have no intention of being holed up like a prisoner ordering food online. I hope I dont get it but if it happens so be it. I keep my distance as best I can from people but live in the middle of nowhere anyway with my closest shop 6 miles away

it's a reactionary thing  ...the important thing with hand washing is the timing  -- ie coming home after  you've been out  touching/picking stuff up outside .

if f/example you've been home 3 days running there is no need to wash your hands anymore than you would normally  - covid doesn't walk through the door with a spare key
Report Whisperingdeath March 29, 2020 8:57 AM BST
MY Aldi have put up plastic screens around the tills which if nothing else shows at least they have thought about it.

The thing about masks is they are highly visual giving the impression you have thought about your safety and other people.  Asks also stop you touching your mouth. Gloves are even more important but I have not seen any politicians or tv presenters wearing them.  Dry few people in supermarkets are wearing gloves.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves March 29, 2020 11:18 AM BST
I'd worry that I'd be constantly adjusting the mask if I wore one, hence touching my mouth or nose.

Going back to the handwashing 20 times a day thing, I'm reminded of my Ukrainian father, who somehow survived 4 years fighting on the Russian front. My (English) mother used to make fun of him for being a 'right old worry-guts'. Looking back, maybe his survival and him being a worry-guts were related. The last person I'd want next to me in a war is a a man without fear.

You should still keep up the handwashing if you live with someone else in case you have the virus but are asymptomatic.
