I think people need to get over China now. If they claimed 50k had died you still won't believe them. Or will you? There's no prize for figuring out China is bad.

Spain is accelerating faster than Italy

The almost doubling of new daily cases on 23 March is particularly scary, todays number will likely be higher again.

Yep, Spain at 385 deaths today already is frightening.

And yet Portugal has around 2,000 cases and 23 deaths.

Was listening to the World service last night when I heard the care home story ,Soldiers turned up to Find the Dead and Dying ,Probably after relatives unable to get in touch Raised the Alarm , Those running the place long gone , Very disturbing

It will be easy to find out who should have been there.  Wouldn't want to be in their shoes.

So the death rate dropped by a 1/3 between the 23-Mar/24-Mar ? and are these figures over and above the usual daily death rate in Spain?

These figures are only for COVID-19, people haven't stopped dying from other causes.

The dutch progression is beginning to look bad. Of course, Amsterdam is a major transit airport.

If they are not over and above the normal daily death rate where's the relevance ? if on average 600,000 die in Spain yearly and that
figure remains the same this year where's the extra deaths from the virus?

If 350 people die from cor19 but 350 less people die from the other flu related illnesses the daily death rate remains the same, one form of deaths is replacing another, which is why it's importent to know if it's driving the death rate above its average.

Tell you what, you go and visit the families of those who have died after contracting COVID-19 and tell them that they should not be counted in the statistics as they'd likely have died anyway.

The time to be concerned about death rates from other causes is either when the COVID-19 outbreak is under control or when a spike is evidenced in one or several other causes.

Spain is currently updating their figures twice per day, an early update and a late update.
They have provided the early update which is included in the data below.

You can see a spike in the number of the recorded cases over the last two completed days with today shaping up to also be above 6,000.
There has also been an acceleration in the daily death toll.

Interesting to hear details of the Prince Charles case, it is thought that he was infected as early as 12 March but was only tested on 23 March, a ten day gap between catching the virus and showing symptoms deemed as necessary to be tested.

The cumulative total uses the scale on the right which is logarithmic.

Spain at 443 reported deaths already today.

Aye, they were at around that with the early update yesterday, jumped to 680 with the later update.
That is their highest single day figure to date.

You have to ask why, amongst other things, athletico madrid were allowed to play Liverpool and flights are still going back and forward to the UK?

Surely we cant be far away from passenger flights being shutdown on a global basis.

The nesting birds were being wiped out by rats which had been brought in by Norwegian whalers that had set up on the island many years ago. A programme was set up to eliminate them and it looks as they they have done it. Effectively every single one of the rodents had to be eliminated because if any survived, it just starts all over again.

We in the UK need to isolate ourselves and we can't do it if we are still allowing flights/ferries coming in daily.

many airlines are ending flights (the middle eastern ones for example), the window for anyone abroad to get to their home country is closing fast.
