Why are certain countries like Italy, Spain and Iran being hit so hard by the virus, yet others seem to be virtually untouched?

Would it alleviate your perplexity if I told you that Milan in north Lombardy is home to Italy's largest Chinese population? Other large Chinese populations can be found in Korea, Japan, London, California, New York, Australia and yes, Iran. It is Iranian Chinese who are responsible for bringing the disease back to China and creating the second wave. See the Wall Street Journal article, 'Strategic Partnership with China Lies at the Heart of Iran's Coronavirus Outbreak.' March 11.

This doesn't make sense. 75% of Singapore's population in Chinese and I've heard nothing about Singapore being a hotspot.
I think I read yesterday Singapore's been reinfected and had two deaths.
I was going to say, what about India in the news just now. How are their numbers so low?

The first case of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic in India was reported on 30 January 2020, originating from China. As of 22 March 2020, the Indian Council of Medical Research and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has confirmed a total of 341 cases, 24 recoveries, 1 migration and 5 deaths in the country. The infection rate of COVID-19 in India is reported to be 1.7, which is remarkable lower than in the worst affected countries.[2]
The outbreak has been declared an epidemic in more than a dozen states and union territories, where provisions of the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897 have been invoked, and educational institutions and many commercial establishments have been shut down. India has also suspended all tourist visas, as a majority of the confirmed cases were linked to other countries.[3]

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore reported two coronavirus-related deaths on Saturday , marking the city-state’s first fatalities from the infection.
Singapore, widely praised for its fastidious onslaught against the virus, has confirmed 385 cases of the infection and had so far managed to avoid any fatalities since the outbreak began in the city-state in late January.

More than a billion people in India have been asked to observe a 14-hour long curfew to try to combat the coronavirus pandemic.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the curfew last week, telling citizens that it would be a test in order to assess the county's ability to fight the virus.
Mr Modi urged citizens to stay indoors from 07:00 (01:30 GMT) until 21:00 on Sunday.
India has so far recorded 315 cases.

FYI - I have been using this site to stay abreast of figures and it appears very accurate. The UK tends to be updated later in the day, with yesterday's figures updating circa 5pm... most countries are listed.
