I have a number of large supermarkets within walking distance and have been a regular visitor over the course of the last week.
The lack of items on the shelf is clearly accelerating and we are only at the beginning of this Sad

Sainsbury's yesterday had no milk, toilet roll, pasta, canned food, soap, biscuits, fresh fruit and veg. Also very low on freash meat, fish and ready meals.

Much better at M&S today.  No dried pasta or canned food. Very low on freash veg, fruit and milk but plenty of bread, ready meals, biscuits, fresh meat.

The fact the old and frail are standing in empty shops without food is heartbreaking. Old folks homes are struggling to get food, as lemming like morons fill their cupboards, it's making me increasingly VERY angry. It's not doing much for my faith in modern humanity any good, that's for sure.
And it's not just the UK from what I can see, it's across the world.

Given fresh food is disappearing instantly as well as long term food and it will go off, what's the betting the bins of said morons in a short period are going to be full of mouldy bread, rotten meat, black festering fruit etc, when people who could've eaten it .. couldn't?

I've not raged this much since one of the more annoying betfair 3pm crashes!!!! LaughDevilAngryAngryAngry

If you are told to self isolate for 2 weeks you need 2 weeks of food and toiletries.   If no one's going to restaurants and take aways, the demand for supermarket food increases.

It's easy to blame the public, but the supermarkets are more culpable.  They should have limited to a max of 2 items a fortnight ago.

I'd take the car to avoid being in close proximity with other shoppers on the streets (it's almost inevitable in supermarkets) but still try and keep 1m distance at the checkout. I'll also try good local delicatessens for bread and upmarket supermarkets like Waitrose and M&S for other stuff; avoid Asda, Morrison and the discounters as you're bound to encounter panic-buyers (empty shelves a probability but less of it). Also, the queues will be significantly shorter.

We are told everything is okay in terms of food supply if everyone behaves themselves. Well they are going to so it is pointless even saying it as long as things are allowed to continue as they are.

So you have empty shelves and the shopping experience reduced to a nightmare.

If you then try to explore home shopping as I have done you find exactly the same situation. Supermarkets completely overrun and unable to cope. Most online supermarkets not even taking on new customers and those that do having no available time slots for at least three weeks.

The whole food situation is an utter shambles.

Good luck Dr Crippen. Get better soon.

Tackling panic buying and persistent empty shelves restocking could alleviate the predicament, but no guarantee and will take time. However, a strict shopping policy introduce at shops will put an end to it - kill it at source; employ more security guards to patrol the aisles and expel panic buyers or rogue shoppers, if necessary.
Report Injera March 21, 2020 11:55 AM GMT
Possible solution:

Define essentials.

Stack ‘essentials’ separately and off limits.

Allow people to buy non essentials.

Then have staff hand out rationed  essentials from behind barriers.

I only went to a local shop in a very small town at 07.00 for newspapers (I buy for a few neighbours as well) and a steak pie to keep a 7 day supply of fresh food for my wife and I. Only 2 other customers and all shelves as normal. In view of the horror stories on here I am not divulging where I live for the duration. My experience so far is that if you get there early food shops are deserted. I am usually up by 6 so no hardship in that regard.

I have heard of another farm shop very close tome where by 11.00 today people were carting off 2 or 3 20kg bags of potatoes. Unless they are buying for several families, they can't possibly eat all of those before they shoot or go soft even if they have them for 3 meals a day. Maybe they are going to plant them all and start digging some in September when everything is back to normal!
