If only there was some way we could make stripping shelves a good thing?

They should make the BACKS of shelves like those bits of cardboard with peanuts stuck on them in pubs, have an interesting backdrop?

Basically: Stick topless women on the back of supermarkets stacking units. Let's turn this nightmare into a pleasurable experience!

(Next thing to be sold out would be macintosh coats).

Gawd I'd love to see the reaction of the Twitter Woke Brigade if you tried that LaughLaughLaughLaugh.

Those tw@ts you are talking about JC have now donated all the sanitizers out of the goodness of their hearts, erm I mean they were being investigated for price gouging and had a miraculous change of heart. They are the dictionary definition of scum of the earth.

People will try to profit from this

You can be sure the corporations will so why don't people expect it of the little pr*ck on the street?

The best thing people could do to quell the panic is to stop posting picture after picture of empty shelves on social media!

I ain't worried one bit, this whole thing is quite frankly funny and annoying, funny from an overblown overreaction from the public, the government and their handlers are proper trolling everyone with this

Absolute madness. My argument is how are they going to hide this? I mean 4,000 deaths in Italy but how far are they going to go with it before people start questioning it? even the actual health care people will be questioning it soon

UK is just bribing everyone with handouts LaughLaugh here have some extra dole money, here have your wages and sit home

Well, I usually go out of town on Saturdays to Asda's for my weekly shop but:

Do I take the bus and risk getting coronered ?

Will there be anything on the shelves when I get there?

I don't know.

Maybe I should just go  to my local Aldi and hope for bread, hot cross buns and milk.Cry

One week since Cheltenham

West Brom striker Charlie Austin has urged people not to take coronavirus lightly after testing positive. The English 30-year-old suspects he contracted it at the Cheltenham Festival.

I'd take the car to avoid being in close proximity with other shoppers on the streets (it's almost inevitable in supermarkets) but still try and keep 1m distance at the checkout. I'll also try good local delicatessens for bread and upmarket supermarkets like Waitrose and M&S for other stuff; avoid Asda, Morrison and the discounters as you're bound to encounter panic-buyers (empty shelves a probability but less of it). Also, the queues will be significantly shorter.

try farmshops if got any in area or garden centres- might pay little bit more but far less queues.

Apparently the absolute opposite is true in these parts re queues at these places.

We are told everything is okay in terms of food supply if everyone behaves themselves. Well they are going to so it is pointless even saying it as long as things are allowed to continue as they are.

So you have empty shelves and the shopping experience reduced to a nightmare.

If you then try to explore home shopping as I have done you find exactly the same situation. Supermarkets completely overrun and unable to cope. Most online supermarkets not even taking on new customers and those that do having no available time slots for at least three weeks.

The whole food situation is an utter shambles.

Good luck Dr Crippen. Get better soon.

Tackling panic buying and persistent empty shelves restocking could alleviate the predicament, but no guarantee and will take time. However, a strict shopping policy introduce at shops will put an end to it - kill it at source; employ more security guards to patrol the aisles and expel panic buyers or rogue shoppers, if necessary.

Possible solution:

Define essentials.

Stack ‘essentials’ separately and off limits.

Allow people to buy non essentials.

Then have staff hand out rationed  essentials from behind barriers.

What could be the next unexpected shortage...

For instance, what could fuel a fuel shortage....did you see what I did there?

People, who hardly go anywhere, doing brim fills.....
People trailing around to find more bread, and milk, and bacon to stash in their freezers....

When: 21 Mar 20 14:03
Injera, that is a very good suggestion but they don't yet have enough staff to restock the shelves never mind police them. I only went to a local shop in a very small town at 07.00 for newspapers (I buy for a few neighbours as well) and a steak pie to keep a 7 day supply of fresh food for my wife and I. Only 2 other customers and all shelves as normal. In view of the horror stories on here I am not divulging where I live for the duration. My experience so far is that if you get there early food shops are deserted. I am usually up by 6 so no hardship in that regard.

You’re blessed sage. Tesco’s opens here at 6 and it’s quickly rammed. Queued for an hour at the till the other day.

Farm shops and other local stores are useful, but still busy.

How long will cash machines continue in use? Infected fingers could prove fatal. And who will be willing to refill them?

Sage, in the SE, people are queuing before the doors open.

Sainsbury's are shortening their opening hours to 8am to 8pm so staff have more time to fill the shelves.

theres to many fooooking loons getting a platform to spout absolute shoite unchallenged, one on tv this morning proposing nhs workers can use supermarkets at the same times as older people

got be a fooooooooking wind up

nhs workers working 12,15 hr shifts with the most infected corona patients than going shopping with the most vulnerable in society,

some people just need to keep their fooooooking mouths shut

Amazing. Where are people getting the money and where are they putting what they buy? I have heard of another farm shop very close tome where by 11.00 today people were carting off 2 or 3 20kg bags of potatoes. Unless they are buying for several families, they can't possibly eat all of those before they shoot or go soft even if they have them for 3 meals a day. Maybe they are going to plant them all and start digging some in September when everything is back to normal!
By:
Injera
When: 21 Mar 20 14:14
Yes I guess the one positive is that people have the money to fill their trolleys.

Until their credit card is maxed out. Cash only might help to ration food.
