What caused Coronavirus in the first place?

DNA is close to a virus found in bats, but perhaps not close enough for a direct jump so theory I read was it may have been two jumps via an intermediate unknown carrier? They are still looking, if there was a smoking gun we'd have heard about it.
You can be sure they are looking? When you think of a chinese meat market, you don't get a mental image like Tesco, and we can't control that.

If a smoking gun could be traced to the Chinese authorities we won't hear anything. The most likely answer is mutation which is the same cause as every other epidemic in humans, mammals and plants for millions of years. Swine flu, bird flu and all of the other diseases that jumped from one species to another are the same. I was a pig farmer for 30 years and we went to great lengths to isolate them from other pigs and potential vectors of disease such as birds, rodents and humans. Isolation of the animals and disinfecting everyone and every vehicle who came to the farm. The human population behave in a way which is ideal for spreading disease so the isolation policies should teach us to be more careful in future.

Considered most likely cause is bat to pangolin to humans, same as SARS 2003.

Conspiracy theories are:-

1) US army personnel spread it at the World Military games in Wuhan in October 2019, when the US team were staying very close to the seafood market where the initial outbreak is thought to have occurred and their performance at the games was disproportionately below average almost to the point that they had no real interest in competing - that's the theory on the Chinese internet, probably helped to be spread by the government.

2) The Chinese built a very hi-tech lab in Wuhan after SARS 2003 to study infectious diseases and some suspect they are secretly developing biological weapons like this there and that it accidentally leaked out and that's why they initially tried to cover it up and suppress talk about it.

3) Then there's the curious case of Charles Lieber a Chemistry and Biology Professor at Harvard who was found to have taken millions in funding from the Chinese govt without declaring it (a criminal offence for which he has been charged) and was paid €50k a month to help develop a lab at Wuhan University (primarily an engineering uni), travelling there regularly. His area of expertise is nanoengineering and not viruses but this virus contains nanoparticles and perhaps some expertise in that field would be required to develop it. 2 Chinese 'students' in the US on J1 visas were arrested in connection to this, one of them a Chinese Communist party member and the other a Lieutenant in the Chinese army, ie not merely students. One of them was stopped at Boston airport awaiting a flight to China with 21 vials of 'biological research' wrapped in a sock in his bag. He claims he was taking them to the Wuhan Uni lab to develop them and pass them off as his own research. None of this is apparently related to the coronavirus tho and very little has been written about it in the media but it is all true. The other one was found to be in regular contact with Chinese govt officials throughout her stay.

They haven't killed millions of their own though have they? If fact they have a remarkably low death count/rate for a country of 1.5bn (not 2bn as the expert on Joe Rogan stated) where the virus has been found in all regions of China, but of course that could rise for as long as there is no widely available vaccine.

I doubt if it was engineered it would have been willingly released without a vaccine having already been developed. So, from an animal or accidental leak from a lab are the most likely imo.
