With P&O, currently I rate the chances as follows;
1/10 it doesnt go (cancelled by P&O or otherwise)
6/1 it goes but we cant get off
500/1 goes ahead as planned
Currently been offered £400 extra spending money not to cancel or if we do cancel 50/50 refund and future cruise credit.
I will sit tight to the end and if it goes I'll be on it.

I'd do the same as you.

What do you get if they cancel the trip?

Usual Med stops, Italy (no chance of bring let off there) Spain, France and Gibralter. Have done them before so no big deal if I dont get off. If P&O cancel then its a full refund or whatever they want to offer in future cruise credit, I will be taking the refund if that happens. Quite happy to just sail round the med with no stops providing they up the ante on the perks (free drinks for a starter).

You'll be alright anyway with that green blood of yours.

what happens if you cant dock and cant get supplies ? will cannibalism come into play ?
Report Mr Spock March 14, 2020 5:48 PM GMT
After todays events I've resigned myself that the 'logical' outcome will be I wont be going, so I'll just wait for the P&O email and request a refund.

All the cruise ships will probably be commandeered by the Govt by then to ferry all the dead and infirmed to Australia with.

Catch it now so you are cured and immune by then and can enjoy it in safety? Wink

FYI Travel insurers are now putting in "we'll have **** all to do with covering anything caused by Coronavirus in any way" clauses, including retrospectively to existing policies.

Hmm. So you are saying that if cruises/holidays are cancelled due to virus, travel insurance companies won't pay out on existing policies?

Many of Britain’s biggest insurers are pulling down the shutters to new travel insurance customers, with Aviva, Direct Line and Churchill the latest to stop selling policies as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

Responding to the moves, the consumer body Which? said the government, insurers and the travel sector needed to “urgently” work together to tackle the challenge because “the industry depends on people having the confidence to travel knowing they will be covered”.

On Wednesday 11 March, LV became the first big insurer to stop selling travel insurance to new customers. Then on 13 March, Direct Line and Churchill said they had taken a decision to temporarily suspend the sale of travel insurance to new customers “so we can focus on our existing customers”. Laugh

A couple of hours later, Britain’s biggest insurer, Aviva, said it had “made the difficult decision to withdraw our single-trip and annual multi-trip travel insurance to new customers”. It added: “We envisage that this decision … will be a temporary action. We will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

Direct Line and Churchill said they had experienced “a huge increase in demand” for travel insurance, and that their priority was to protect and service their existing customers. “We have not taken this decision lightly and we carefully considered many different options prior to reaching this decision.”

The changes are on top of restrictions being added to policies by these and other insurers.

The moves by several of the UK’s biggest insurers underline unprecedented turmoil in the industry caused by the spiralling cost of dealing with travel problems caused by the outbreak.

"Hmm. So you are saying that if cruises/holidays are cancelled due to virus, travel insurance companies won't pay out on existing policies? "

Depends when booked. The WHO rolled out Private Frazer for it's announcement that "we're all doomed!!!" 11th March. So for example insure and go will not cover anything booked after that date if it's affected by coronavirus.

OP's post is 8th March so he should be OK.

In other words you are now saying that travel insurance companies will pay out on existing policies?

If booked before that date in that case, but it'll vary depending on insurer.

I think once you've had "fair warning" things are bolloxed (and unless you live under a rock you have), they have a getout.

I don't get it. You are claiming that some insurers will pay out but others won't on existing policies?

Was due to fly to vegas on the 22nd, we asked last week what would be the cost to change the holiday to Oct, no problem said the travel agent I'll find out the cost, BA wanted £350 each to defer the flights to Oct, the agent actually said  wait till a couple of days before they may ban flights from here & save me the trouble which has now happened, I would hope a refund is forthcoming but nothing would surprise me.

My insurance was taken out last year (December) and is an annual policy so that side is ok, if I'm fit to travel and P&O cancel the cruise I am sure they are liable to pay me the cost back.

I've never been to Vegas.  What does one do? Casinos and relax in the hotel?  Trip to the Grand Canyon?
Report pumphol. March 14, 2020 8:30 PM GMT
Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Death Valley,  variety of shows, some decent eateries, a bit of gambling, some great hotels to look around, funnily enough I don't play that much when I'm there but for many that's the main reason to go, Ilike this time of year its around 70 degrees during the day though chilly at night.

One of my friends did the full wedding thing in Vegas. In the limousine on the way to the chapel there was a sign suggesting the tip to the driver was $130. At the chapel a guy took their photos on a 35mm camera, charged them $200 and handed them the spool to develop themselves. The pictures were crap so they went back the next day and got them taken again by someone else!

The key point about insurance is I think uk govt or WHO travel advisories - "essential travel only".  At the moment I think I've lost £500 for a canaries apartment.  Our flight's been cancelled but atm there isn't a warning about the canaries.  I can try to get something from jet2, but I would be surprised if they weren't bust within weeks.

Just had an email from Cunard saying they are cancelling all sailings until 11th April and QM2/Queen Victoria returning to Southampton.
