Boris Johnson: "We're guided by the science and our experts..."

Let's hope our experts are right and all those in other countries are wrong.

Chris Whitty: "We don't want to implement drastic measures too early... people lose enthusiasm and don't adhere to these practices when we hit the peak..."

Ok, even if he's correct, surely by taking drastic measures now, you reduce the number of infections at the peak?
Report Angoose March 12, 2020 5:33 PM GMT
Not necessarily and the reality is we will never REALLY know what the best course to have taken actual looks like.
The only way that you can determine that is to run full scale experiments which can’t realistically be done.

Boris has everything under control.

"However, new measures are going to be in place.

They include:

Staying at home for seven days if you have, however mild, a new continuous cough or higher temperature

Advise all those over-70s not to go on cruises

Advise against international school trips."
Report Angoose March 12, 2020 5:36 PM GMT
And keep a stiff upper lip.
Report jollyswagman March 12, 2020 5:38 PM GMT
one of the experts mentioned the behavioural aspect - it appears they are trying to use nudge theory on the country.

4 weeks behind italy is better than others were saying which is good.

peak 10-14 weeks away??? Sad

Well, in that case, as I said, let's hope our experts are better than those in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Austria, Australia, Israel, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain...

Don’t forget that not all countries are at the same stage.
Italy has only recently introduced a lockdown, it wasn’t in place 4 weeks ago.

Just been told that we are around 4 weeks behind Italy.

Report i_agree_with_nick March 12, 2020 5:51 PM GMT
Angoose - I realise that but I'm hearing eminent people saying that now is the time to implement tough measures.  In fact, they're saying such measures should have been put in place two weeks ago.
Report i_agree_with_nick March 12, 2020 5:54 PM GMT

During Boris Johnson's address, one of the advisors did confirm this but stressed that this was not in terms of any restrictions or measures that may be implemented.

Aren't the WHO sayng it is time for draconian measures?

Chris Whittys quote seems nonsense that people will lose their enthuasiasm, he up to now seemed genuine enough.
Report i_agree_with_nick March 12, 2020 6:05 PM GMT
Imho, up until very recently, few people were taking this seriously:

"It's just the flu."
"It'll disappear."
"What's all the fuss about"

And some didn't (maybe still don't) think it even existed.
Report i_agree_with_nick March 12, 2020 6:06 PM GMT
Even the new advice that has come out today, is just that: advice.

There are no restrictions whatsoever!
Report jollyswagman March 12, 2020 6:07 PM GMT
what do you mean up to very recently? on here most of them are still comparing it to the flu Plain

Sir Patrick Vallance, the Chief Scientific adviser, has said that we want to delay the spread so the NHS can cope and that it is desirable that some people do get infected so we can develop immunity.

Boris Johnson: "worst public health crisis in a generation... people will lose loved ones before their time..."

UK government's response: wash your hands, don't go on a cruise if you're over 70.
