Why aren't the UK authorities clamping down to try and contain the virus?

The numbers of UK infected are incorrect.
The figures they give out are for people who have been tested and found positive, but if you phone 111 and report your symptoms they tell you to self-isolate. You will not be recorded as a confirmed case.

So the numbers of UK infected will be much higher than the ones they're giving out. Now why would they want to play down the seriousness of the extent, which will lead to people taking a casual attitude and not taking precautions?

People are not being screened at UK airports after they arrive. Some say they're not being met by officials and simply walk through as normal.
Yet look at the security when we try to board a plane.
Many were calling for strict checks from the very beginning of the outbreak.

How can an event like the Cheltenham festival be allowed to continue?
With the numbers present there has to be infected people walking about. This means that punters from all parts of the country will come together, and many will take it back home with them - to all parts of the country.

The above seems like madness, but the authorities are not mad.
So what are they?

complacency and incompetence rather than conspiracy in play here imo, all around the western world. some countries in the far east have taken a far more studious approach - singapore, hong kong and taiwan who are right in the firing line but have a far more aggressive approach. the view is these countries have deep scars from sars and dont want to get caught out so have acted accordingly.

south korea had a bad outbreak due to religious nutters and have undertaken massive amounts of testing. testing, isolation and contact tracing are what you should do apparently. even so after seeming to be in control they have just had a major cluster appear at a call centre so are still deep in the doo doo.

The SARS virus – which between 2002 and 2004 infected 8,098 people and killed 774 – had infact ‘escaped’ multiple times from a lab in Beijing prior to Wuhan’s lab opening, according to the Nature article. China installed the first of a planned five to seven biolabs designed for maximum safety in Wuhan in 2017, for the purpose of studying the most high-risk pathogens, like SARS.

The lab, housed at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, was built in 2015 and ready to open in 2017. It was the first ever lab in the country designed to meet biosafetey-level-4 (BSL-4) standards – the highest biohazard level, meaning that it would be qualified to handle the most dangerous pathogens. BSL-4 labs have to be equipped with airtight hazmat suits or special ‘cabinet’ work spaces that confine viruses and bacteria that can be transmitted through the air to sealed boxes that scientists reach into using attached high-grade gloves.

There are about 54 BSL-4 labs worldwide. China’s first, in Wuhan, received federal accreditation in January 2017.

Maybe the best way of beating it is building up an immunity to it, or at least trying to. Yes, the weak will not survive this, but if I'm reading correctly, most are getting no more than mild symptoms and if the body's natural defences can fight it then it could be one reason they are acting accordingly. To be fair I have no clue and just batting this out there.

Got this from ITV article dated 6/02/2020, if those figures are correct, I didn't notice any panic in previous years regarding a spreading virus. I reckon viruses like this have always spread they just haven't been identified and tracked this one...........................................

Although flu might not seem like a deadly illness, on average it kills around 17,000 people in England a year.

Public Health England told ITV News: "The number of flu cases and deaths due to flu-related complications varies each flu season.

"The average number of deaths in England for the last five seasons, 2014/15 to 2018/19, was 17,000 deaths annually.

"This ranged from 1,692 deaths last season, 2018/19, to 28,330 deaths in 2014/15."

Since October, more than 4,000 people with confirmed flu have been admitted to hospitals in England with at least 70 deaths.

Coronavirus: a propaganda master advises the President before he addresses the nation

Read all the way through to catch that chunk

by Jon Rappoport

March 11, 2020

What do most people say, if you raise questions about the reality of the “epidemic,” or even hint that the facts might be in doubt?

Two responses high on the list: “but people are dying”; and “the experts wouldn’t lie.”

So, in this episode of virus fakery and apocalypse on rye with mustard, I present a tale I like to call: THE PROPAGANDA MASTER COMES TO TOWN.

This character is a wisdom figure and a teacher. He’s an old pro. He makes sure the lies are being told well and often. He reminds his troops of their mission. Pardon his language, but he has a very low opinion of humanity.

Here he is now, getting out of his limo and walking into a five-star hotel.

Conference room. A security team has checked the space for bugs and other electronic snooping. The shades are drawn. A dozen propaganda ops specialists are sitting at the long table.

The maestro walks into the room, stands at one end of the table, and without formalities, begins talking:

—I only have a few minutes. I’m on my way to Rome to brief the Pope. So here it is. We put messages into the heads of the great unwashed masses, so they’ll pass those messages to others. Get it? THAT’S the real contagion factor. Never forget it. We’re Info Central for the rubes and yokels and idiots, including high IQ idiots who think their college degree means they’re educated in science.

—We work with death. People all over the world are dying all the time, every day. The public doesn’t want to think about that. Good. That’s good for us. Our job is to convince the yokels that the “new” dying which is happening now comes from a special virus. We do that by equating DEATH and CORONAVIRUS. Get it? Never forget it. “People are dying, it must be the virus.” That’s our ticket.

—Our medical brethren in this great con have already done a terrific job carving up death into various categories. But now they can make ordinary pneumonia into coronavirus pneumonia at the drop of a hat. They can make flu into corona. They can make a man falling down stairs a victim of the virus. A flying saucer crashes in a field? If that happened, a CDC official with a straight face could tell the yokels and idiots that the alien pilot of the craft was struck down by the virus and that’s why he lost control of the saucer.

—So we can’t let our medical friends down. We have to ramp up the intensity of the message. I want more predictions from Harvard and Yale big shots. You know, millions are going to die. Half the world’s population is going to be infected.

—Some of the idiots and loons we target are politicians. They “believe in science.” We want these pols to lock down cities. Cut off transportation. Make people feel the sting. The sting and the crisis and the quarantine equal THE VIRUS. We own the virus. It’s our psy-weapon. It’s an idea, a notion, a ghost, a terrorist, a monster, and only the medical experts can control it, if people follow all their orders. Keep pounding that message.

—Now, just between us, did they ever find a brand new virus in China to begin with? Who cares? Are the diagnostic tests for the virus inadequate and useless and worthless and deceiving? Of course. Is the “virus epidemic” a gold-plated fake? Sure. Are all sorts of people being diagnosed with corona who have no disease at all? You bet. Are people who are sick for all sorts of reasons being told they’re corona cases? Yeah. That’s our bread and butter. Some poor bastard gets off a plane and he has a slight fever from the bad air in the cabin and he’s whisked to a military base for quarantine. Play it up. “The virus can get you anytime, anywhere.” In a city, the ICU ward in a hospital is overflowing with sick people? Of course it is. People are sick all the time. But now, with the wave of a magic wand, they’re put in the ICU because they must be corona. Good. I want more pictures of that ICU. I want video on the news. More of it. Get busy. Don’t slack off. This is a circus. There are rules for a circus. The main rule is, people get bored quickly, so you need lots of acts and tricks and animals and side shows and candy to keep the audience occupied. An ICU here, an ICU there. A mother crying. Who cares why? It must be the virus. I don’t want to hear about all the other reasons people are sick. I just want to hear VIRUS.

—Never forget how easily you can fool the yokels. Yesterday, a guy living in an apartment house had the flu. No big deal. But today, same guy? Corona. Nothing changed except the news. All his neighbors in the building forget that yesterday this guy had ordinary flu. It’s a beautiful thing. Use it. I want to see more funerals on the news. Get busy. Show me more sporting events happening in empty stadiums.

—Our holy grail, our perfect ideal, which is unattainable, would be: every death in the world for the next six months or a year is called coronavirus. But we can strive toward that ideal. We must.

—There are two echelons. There is WE. And there is THEY-THEM. WE keep THEM in their limited minds. We bolster those limited minds with our messages. Keep them yammering, “But people are dying, it must be the virus!” It’s pure gold. Keep mining that gold.

Back in his limo, the maestro puts in a call to his contact at the CDC. “Listen up,” he says, “you people over there are starting to wobble. I’m talking about the diagnostic test for the virus. First, your test kits were bad, they didn’t work. Now you don’t have enough of them to satisfy needs. Plus the word is starting to leak out that the tests are inherently unreliable and no one should believe them. This crap must stop now. Shore up your troops. Get them in line. I want healthy people and sick people and old people and young people and all people to be diagnosed with corona, and I don’t want any uncertainties. You and I know the test is a joke, it doesn’t work, but nobody else can find that out. Got it? People over there at the CDC can be replaced. They can find themselves out on the street. What’s in charge of this operation is propaganda, not science. YOU back US up. That’s the hierarchy. I want FEAR raging through the population. If you can’t hold up your end, you’re going to find all the quotes about the epidemic in the press are suddenly coming from the World Health Organization, not the CDC. I’ll make sure you’re shoved into the background. The World Health people are professional. They know how to deliver a unified con job. Those two idiots, the governor of New York and the mayor of New York, are doing more to hype this fake epidemic than all the employees of the CDC put together. Get your house in order. Fast.”

He closes his phone and puts it in his pocket. On the way to the airport, he hums a little tune. He looks out the window. He thinks to himself, if we can stretch this out far enough, we can force a cancelation of the Olympics. Maybe we can even stage a presidential election in America on the Internet. No one votes in a booth. Can’t risk transmission of the virus. He chuckles. His phone vibrates. He takes it out.

“Yes, sir?” he says. He listens. Nods. “Yes, sir, I know you’re going to address the nation on the pandemic in a few minutes. Well, sir, this is a squeeze play. You’re in the middle. I know you understand that. If you go too far in minimizing the risk of the epidemic, you’re going to get hit hard from all sides. Mayors, governors, scientists, doctors, public health officials, members of Congress, big tech, the media—they’re all going to carve you into a grinning pumpkin. To say nothing of what’s been happening to the stock market. If you try minimize the “epidemic,” the whole economic picture is going to go upside down. Even Goldman Sachs won’t be able to protect you. Look around you. That schmuck mayor of New York is making noises about shutting down the whole Subway system. My advice is, let this operation run its course. Read the tea leaves of history. Many presidents have trouble at the end of a term. The coronavirus fakery is your trouble. Ride it out. If you can’t beat Joe Biden in November, you should go back to building golf courses. He’s hanging on by a thread. I don’t think the doctors can pump him up with enough drugs to keep his brain functioning during a debate. You might stagger into office on a low for your second term, but the epidemic op will fade out, the economy will come back, and you’ll—don’t be angry, sir, your enemies have been looking for an Achilles heel since you started campaigning back in 2015. They tried this, they tried that, it didn’t really work. But this medical op works. Are you really going to say the medical experts are all liars and fake news? Are you contemplating that? Take it from me, it won’t fly. You know I’m right. The medical propaganda of the past hundred years is a winner. How can you buck it, especially in the middle of this current **** storm? If I cared about the truth, I’d be in a dither. Fortunately, I’m above the fray. Listen to your wise old uncle. Take the bitter with the sweet. You’re a pro in your field. The art of the deal. In this instance, the deal is live to fight another day. You painted your picture of “the grand economic recovery”, and now they’re spraying all over it with graffiti. That’s what enemies do. I have some interesting material on Biden and Bernie, if you’d like me to—“

The maestro looks at his phone. “He hung up,” he says to his driver.

“He’s a quick study,” the driver says.

They laugh.

“What are you going to say to the Pope?” the driver asks.

“I’m going to tell him to keep his big mouth shut. And if he can’t do that, and he wants to bring God into it, we’ll work on the statement. Change it to Nature. That’s softer. Nature has its ways. It must be respected. God gave us the intelligence to work with Nature, and the means to develop medical science. Doctors are healers. Follow their recommendations. Something like that. On the way over in the plane, I’ll come up with some quotes. Stay by my side. You’re packing heat. They’ll ask for your weapon before they let us in the Vatican. Give it to them. Keep your eyes trained straight ahead. Don’t look past any open doors. Who knows what you’d see? I don’t want anyone to call us as witnesses in a future court case…”

“You’re careful as always,” the driver says.

“Careful in the details, absolutely reckless when it comes to the overall plan. Tell a lie so outrageous, no one can believe it’s a lie.”

At the White House, the president steps to the podium and looks at the camera. He thinks, I wonder what would happen if I went off script and said, you know, there must be ten thousand people in Washington who know there’s something weird about this coronavirus situation. There’s the whole flu thing. The CDC says thirty thousand people in the US die from ordinary flu every single year, like clockwork, and there are millions of flu cases every year—but nobody’s calling THAT an epidemic. The stock market isn’t crashing because of THAT. Nobody’s getting quarantined because of THAT. They aren’t going to play the whole NCAA March Madness tournament in empty arenas because of THAT. What the hell’s going on?

The president starts to speak to the nation.

The cancellation of mass gatherings makes no sense to me either. The biggest gathering of people at any one time is the work place. Every morning in the UK 10 of millions of workers ( 100 or so in Liverpool ) are mixing together, packing on to trains, buses and sidewalks all breathing everyone else's air, walking around in air conditioned offices with a potential virus circulating through the building. What difference does it make it 40 odd thousand get together at an event Confused If the Gov want to stop the spread of this or any flue type virus, issue every one with free masks and hand sanitiser, this would be a hell of a lot cheaper, more effective and less catastrophic to the country/world than what is now happening. Angry.......................................................................

Report Injera March 12, 2020 3:55 PM GMT
The big gatherings thing confuses me too. When you attend an event you only mix with a few. The bigger problem is the travelling to and from on public transport. Yet that is happening every day anyway.
The first thing to be done is cancelling flights from China, then Iran and Italy. This still hasn’t been done!!

I’ve just had a look at my local airport’s arrivals from Italy.....

Between 6pm and midnight there are 13 (thirteen) flights arriving into Gatwick tonight....that includes Venice and Milan.

Greta, Harry, Sir Dave, BBC et al been telling us millions will die due to carbon emissions. The virus is slowing production, massively reducing trade and travel. Carbon emissions dropping every day.

So lives will be saved? Will it be a net gain?

2014/15 28000 deaths
Last year 1700.

What is going on seriously? what is their goal?

Their 'goal' is social control . Under normal circumstances the population will resist any form of State control and any threat to their right to freedom of movement and freedom to gather peacefully (either to protest or for leisure activities such as sports events etc.) .
But first of all the government need to rule by fear and this is done by stealth . If the people can be convinced that they are in imminent danger (also their families and in particular the elderly) they will be more inclined to accept restrictions imposed by the State . This will be done gradually until such time that the State has gained total control over the people . The only thing that will thwart their attempts is if a sufficient percentage of people start to question government propaganda fed to the masses through the media . If this forum , and in particular threads such as this , are any guide the number of gullible , sheep-like citizens , are in the minority . However it may be a sufficiently large minority to enable the State to achieve its aim !

What is flu?
Influenza is defined by the Gray Laboratory's medical dictionary as "an acute viral infection involving the respiratory tract. It is marked by inflammation of the nasal mucosa, the pharynx and conjunctiva and by headache and severe, often generalised myalgia. Fever, chills and prostration are common." The incubation period is one to three days and the disease ordinarily lasts for three to ten days.

What are the symptoms?

Self-diagnosis of flu is difficult as its classic symptoms, a fever, a sore throat, a headache and aching joints, are often confused with a common cold. You can test whether you have the flu on the NHS Direct website.

Flu differs from a common cold in the way that its viral strains rapidly appear and affect large numbers of people. Flu usually involves these initial symptoms, along with a worsening of the sore throat and muscle pains.

How does it spread?

Flu viruses enter the body through the eyes, nose or mouth. Flu is usually spread from person to person via airborne droplets or respiratory fluids, especially coughing and sneezing.

Is it fatal?

Yes. Every year flu kills thousands, particularly the elderly. Healthy people tend not to die from flu, although they can if complications develop, such as pneumonia or blood poisoning.

What I do?

If you are suffering from flu symptoms, you should stay at home, keep warm (but not over-warm), take basic painkillers such as Paracetamol to relieve your temperature, and drink plenty of water or other fluid to prevent becoming dehydrated.

Antibiotics are not effective against the flu. If your illness lasts longer than the usual three to ten days, you should see your doctor. You should also get medical advice if you are at risk of developing complications. These tend to emerge if you are old, infirm, suffer from a chronic illness or respiratory disease, or have a reduced immunity, from HIV or undergoing chemotherapy for instance.

If you haven't suffered from the virus this year and are at risk from developing severe flu, you can get a vaccination, which provides providing immunity to flu infection. 9m people in Britain have been vaccinated this winter. You need the injection every year: the vaccine is updated annually because of flu's constant mutation into different viral forms.

What is the cure?

Flu can be prevented by vaccination, but there is no cure. Flu is categorised into types A, B and C. Every year or so there are minor "drifts" in the viral strains of flu. These changes are enough to make those who suffered from - and became immune to - the previous strain susceptible to the new one.

This occurs because each flu strain has different surface antigens - which are molecules of two proteins. A person's immune system produce antibodies to fight the invading virus. These are developed specifically to attack each antigen, so when a new flu strain emerges it can circumvent the existing armoury in the body's immune system.

Large changes in the makeup of flu type A occur every decade or so. These are called "antigenic shifts" and tend to result in large epidemics.

Is this bout of flu an epidemic?

An epidemic is defined by the online medical dictionary as "occurring suddenly in numbers clearly in excess of normal expectancy, said especially of infectious diseases but applied also to any disease, injury or other health related event occurring in such outbreaks."

The government says flu reaches epidemic proportions when 400 people per 100,000 are suffering from the virus.

---- we havent reached that level yet ---

Last week, statistics gathered from doctors across the country showed that 144 people per 100,000 had the flu.

The government's chief medical officer professor Liam Donaldson has called the current outbreak the first "serious epidemic" for 10 years. He says the figures are an underestimate because thousands are bypassing their doctors and going to the pharmacist or using the government's new NHS Direct service.

The medical profession disagree. The British Medical Association chairman Dr Ian Bogle has denied the existence of an epidemic. Dr Douglas Fleming, the director of the Birmingham research unit which calculates the official flu figures, says that flu rates are actually "very similar to the figures from last year which were not epidemic".

This year's outbreak falls well short of previous epidemics. In the last official epidemic during the winter of 1989-90, 600 people per 1,000 fell ill and 26,000 people died  ----- They didnt stop liverpool winning the league back then ----

Report Dr Crippen March 19, 2020 12:40 PM GMT
So let's see what's happened in the 7 days since I started the thread.

From a very casual attitude regarding the virus, the bug has been allowed to spread. Until now very severe measures are being taken which they tell us is an attempt to stop its spreading further.
Needless to say the economy is already staggering from the measures, with food shortages a reality following the panic created by the media.

All the wrong moves to guarantee the virus won't be contained, and now they're busy wrecking the economy, businesses, and kids education, in order to achieve the exact opposite of their original stance, which won't stop the virus anyway.

So why are they doing all this? Incompetence, What!  After the way Johnson brilliantly worked his way into power won the GE and put Brexit to bed.

No way are they incompetent, so what's going on?
Report Dr Crippen March 19, 2020 12:48 PM GMT
It's been 8 days since I started the thread not 7.

In that time the government have gone from one extreme to the other.
Report Whisperingdeath March 19, 2020 12:50 PM GMT
I think they are incompetent.

The other alternative is they are bent.

It would appear they have not done what was required to stop the virus getting here in such numbers in the first place.

Who have they protected? Their friends and their friends, diners and themselves

Airlines, usually big supporters of the Conservatives
Insurance Companies,
Members of Lloyd’s?

Why could you fly to a Rome as recently as Friday?

Why were you “ advised “ not to travel or go to pubs rather than prohibited?
Report Whisperingdeath March 19, 2020 12:53 PM GMT
The other big thing is they have been exposed over the NHS and when people finally realise their may be a reckoning.

Why have they not procured sanitizer or set up wash stations on mass transit sites?

What have they done to help people?

They have lost the plot!
Report Dr Crippen March 19, 2020 1:03 PM GMT
The government has protected no one, businesses are all in trouble.

Their inaction at the beginning has led to those companies especially airlines being on the edge of bankruptcy. How can that be viewed as looking after their friends?
Report Whisperingdeath March 19, 2020 1:18 PM GMT
Because they did not want to upset them by forcing them to cancel flights!

The Government did not understand the seriousness of the situation now they have done for the airlines but don’t worry they will bail them out with our tax payer money!

Let’s see how much BA / IAG and Virgin get

What happened during the last crisis....the Banks were bailed out!

The rich were bailed out by the rest of us!

Report Dr Crippen March 19, 2020 1:53 PM GMT
As individuals the people who run these organisations do not need bailing out in any way, they're all rich to start with.

And they stay rich despite what happens to their businesses. Governments act to preserve jobs for the little people, whose votes they depend to get them elected.
The banks had to be bailed out, The airlines will have to be saved, and any large employer has to be stopped from going out of business.

It's not done for politic reasons, it's done because it has to be.
Report Dr Crippen March 19, 2020 1:55 PM GMT
what is really happening !

Attack on the over 70s JWH?

Would explain a lot.
Report Whisperingdeath March 19, 2020 2:25 PM GMT
Excellent then we can nationalise BA and Virgin and pay them current market rate for their shares or better still let it go to The Receivers and the tax payer will get an even better deal! Isn’t that how Capitalism works?
Report Whisperingdeath March 19, 2020 2:26 PM GMT
If they don’t pay wages to their workers then we should not pay anything to the share holders as the Airlines are currently worthless and capacity will not increase any time soon
