the irony is breath taking, she earns her main crust by presenting a show where even those deemed 99,9% beautiful/perfect arnt allowed on for been to ugly, and then spends 2 m onths engineering ways for them to fall out, crack up and then takes Umbridge if so called ordinary folk say a few things about her on social media a media she probably has a millions of posts on.
if your making a living getting people to post positive/negative comments on social media, its only obvious your considered fair game your self,of course ordinary folk if they didn't like it wouldn't use the medium ,not to difficult for a 40 yr old to work out

I too had never heard of her until she was headline news for the boyfriend incident. I often find that people have become 'household names' without me having a clue who they are. A few years back I read that a referee had been in breach of some PL rule or other because he went to an Ed Sheeran concert. I read it twice to check if there was any explanation as to who the fck Ed Sheeran was, but the author was taking it for granted that everyone on the planet knew this. I had never heard of him til that day.

Report breadnbutter February 16, 2020 11:17 PM GMT
They're not household names, just in their own heads, therein lies the problem.                  As mentioned narcissism, sociapathism ect ect and tbh a lot of red tops promulgate a disgusting version of reality to sell papers but social media and its msm feeds are a danger, not just this sort of thing, just a danger.I also had no eye deer who she was until a ridiculous amount of attention and the spotlight treatment over some load of bollocks, just wonder how much drink and drugs is really to blame? None of this seems stuff seems honest, was reading she was worth around 6 million? Ffs how did she manage that level of income and how the fck can she feel life ain't worth living, summit don't add up, but if the Jeremy Kyle dhow got axed over a death then this claptrap must go too.

bread - do you mind if I ask how old you are?

Just want to check if the "only household names in their own heads" isn't just "I don't watch Love Island, follow this kind of stuff online" because I'm over the age of 25 etc.

Never watched a minute of that show myself but I can appreciate that fame is fame and I know who she is. Fame's not just in their heads. There are probably dozens of TV stars, singers and - eurgh - Youtube celebs that my kids will be aware of who I'd have no clue about. I dare say it'd have been the same 30-40 years ago when I was young and raving about my faves. Not sure narcissism is the thing. It's just the fame machine. It's brutal. And then you multiply it by social media. Years ago, you'd have someone do something stupid and they'd be on the front of the tabloids for a couple of days; now they get that but the amplification on SM and everyone owning a smartphone turning every guy on the street into a potential pap or troll getting in your face trying to get a reaction.

God knows I'd hate for my girls to want to get involved in anything remotely trading on personal fame when they're older. Need to have hides like elephants.

think news broke at 6 when I just turned on my tv, I had no idea who she was either and had to google, but I think that's because she was never a mainstream presenter, like Holly Willoughby or Davina McCall, on wiki there were 3 shows I've heard of, two were on itv2 and the other was strictly come dancing which I've never seen an episode of, I used to watch x factor but stopped about 10 years ago, never interested enough to see the side show she was on the second channel, love island is a made out to be huge but it's on itv2 and can't get more than 3-4 million viewers.

but then there was Kobe Bryant who was HUGE in America the same way David Beckham was here, and very mainstread known all over the world, yet I'd never heard of him when news broke he had died, because I've never seen NBA basketball, just comes down to what your own interests are, as the years have gone on most people have turned away from tv and watched Netflix, youtube and the like.

feel especially sorry for her twin sister, I imagined what it'd be like to have a twin who died and you can only think a part of you has died as well. Sad all round.

I don't get the surprise that people had never heard of Caroline Flack.

Like Darren, I also used to watch X Factor for 2 or 3 years. I used to bet on it, and also found it quite enjoyable to watch. The last one though for me was 2008. I never backed the winner somehow, despite backing people at good odds that traded odds on, but also after 3 series you start to realize you are not gonna see anything new on the show as there are similar acts with similar talent levels in each one. I think the last talent show I watched was the BGT that Susan Boyle was in. That was 2009 and from then on I have mainly only switched on ITV for football, and as they have comparatively little of it I spend very little time there and so don't see much trailers for anything else they have. I know they have racing there now but I have been somewhat out of touch with it for a while so not seen much outside the biggest races.

I stopped buying newspapers over a decade ago and don't use the websites of the Sun/Mirror or Star either.

It's ironic that the internet and other modern communication technology were supposedly going to broaden people's cultural horizons, but in practice it means people now just can go straight to whatever TV or News they are interested in, without ever reading or viewing something that will be kind of 'all inclusive' and make mention of all aspects of culture to some extent.

this may have been true 20 years ago but time has moved on, it's not like it was years ago when most people watched the same tv shows at peak time before the rise of streaming platforms, the internet, smart tv's and thousands more TV Channels. Looking at her filmography on wiki she wasn't on any mainstream tv show on a mainstream channel til Strictly 5 years ago and that's not a show you dip in and out of, you either like that kind of thing and watch it or you don't, it is mostly for the older viewer. The other 2 shows were on ITV2 and I don't even know what the channel number is for that lol. Used to watch the x factor religiously when it first started about 15 years ago but the novelty wore off and it became very repetitive and samey, never watched the side show anyway.

A good example is the soap operas, EastEnders and Coronation Street used to regularly achieve 12-15 million viewers every single episode, they were always the number 1 and 2 shows for years and I would recognise any actor from either show walking down the street, haven't seen either for well over a decade and now both shows get about 5 million viewers, last june 1 EastEnders episode only got 2.5 million! and I wouldn't have a clue who the main star was if they walked past me now. Unless phil Mitchell is still there.

another example are music stars, used to watch all the countdown Chart shows from 40-1, everyone knew what the number 1 single was and who the artist was and there were huge chart battles, the average person doesn't know who is number 1 anymore because anyone can be number 1 selling a few thousand copies.

just a name to me be someone else next month, but if people are serious about tackling mental health especially amongst the young
why do they keep describing this woman as happy, funny, bubbly when clearly listening to people who knew her she,s been deeply floored for 20 yrs or more, why don't they explain to people she was playing a part,an act 5/10 min walk on part in a 60 min show.in a 24 hr day, just as bad as using media to try and convince kids evertyones slim, beautiful, clever, successful, etc, etc
