I bought into Bitcoin in late 2018 when it was going ballistic....
First purchases, when I think it was circa £8k, then soaring to over £17k...
I ended up with £2.5k and, purely as an exercise, tried to sell a small amount, but was told "no uk buyers"!!
Well I didn't give a dash where the buyers were, and strange, in any case, there were no UK buyers as I for one, was such!
The value went into freefall, but then the big disaster, being that I had set up "Two Step Verification"....
There is sod all mobile service here, so the verification codes never arrived, before they had lapsed!
Even worse, they had sent authorisation for verification to my e-mail, and they somehow wouldn't' recognise it, even though they mailed me re other topics, so I never got the e-mails!
Blockchain, who were holding the funds couldn't assist, so I was well stuffed, and just gave up on it as a bad all round decision.
Reason I'm talking about it now is that, in addition to the above tale of woe, I had £650.00 of Ethereum with "Coinbase".
Just got an e-mail telling me that my "2 step Verification" details needed to be confirmed so, as I just got another new card issue, I had to go through the motions of registering that card....
Incredibly I got the code (perhaps because I switched networks) and joy of joys, my £650.00 is now worth £116.34!
Why can't I be like Deborah Meaden (well not exactly like her) and all the other minted "celebrats", and be able to set up an account instantly, and be making big bucks in minutes?
As it happens, I was introduced to this by my son, as one of the "techies" in his office was then a £Zillionaire, having been into it for years previously!
Can anyone on here be bold enough, to admit to blowing as much as I have?
Can I divorce my own son, who lost nothing, as he is far too streetwise?
It sounds like you have had a bit of a mare Lady Faye.
After years of thinking about it I took the plunge just over a year ago but rather than get my hands dirty with Bitcoin wallets/exchanges etc. I put a small amount into the XBTE Bitcoin tracker (Euros) ETN (Exchange Traded Note). This can be bought through online brokers such as Hargreaves Lansdown:
There is a 2.5% annual ongoing charge and an indicative price spread of 0.43% so it is relatively costly.
ETN's are similar BUT NOT the same as ETF's.
CAVEAT EMPTOR.
To be honest my small amount is just a bit of insurance in case Bitcoin really does go sky high. When I first heard about Bitcoin they were worth a few dollars each but I didn't have the foresight to buy any. I then watched from the sidelines as the price hit a peak of circa $20k and berated myself that I hadn't got involved.
So when it went on to collapse from that high, I decided to buy a bit for insurance in case the price went stratospheric.

Have never understood them so haven't bought any, but there is an old adage that by the time you hear of something that's going to make you a fortune then the days to invest have already gone.

Lady Faye I got into bitcoin back in November 17 and was trading them 6/7 times a day and ended up with 120 profitable trades in a row. The price started to collapse in the middle of December and I made the classic mistake of buying whilst the price was falling. Needless to say I lost all accumulated profits and more. Rather lost my enthusiasm until at one point last year I started trading again at obviously much lower prices and have now got to the stage where my overall losses are around £1k which is a hell of a lot easier to live with than the £6k when at their lowest value.

Well, have to say that it won't change my life, but it's seriously aggravating to feel like not being in control!
Different on here, as it's just an inevitable event, and "business expense" and, if I get it wrong, easier to come to terms with than my foray into "Crypto Currency"!
Of course (and I'm glad) my son who sowed the seeds, and was surrounded by the euphoria with his workmates, didn't pitch in as had the sense to spend time to understand it!

I never bought into the whole bitcoin thing, nobody could explain to me how you could predict if the price was gonna rise or fall, just seemed like genuine luck to me and a bot of a scam

I am old. Playing poker in a Dublin club we started talking about Bitcoin and such. A young tech savvy guy gave the spiel about the new order of things. When I asked what did Bitcoin represent (backing assets) he countered with what backs the Euro. I tried to suggest it was backed by the assets and economic machine of the Eurozone. I got a withering look as if I had a mental disease. Perhaps I have.

For a "commodity" that has no intrinsic/tangible value ie not backed by any asset bitcoin is extremely expensive even at this level. Nothing but pure speculation "certified" by the betting people in The City otherwise it would have been deemed unlawful a long time ago.
I think its extraordinary success a few years ago is also the reason for its present doldrum. It's too expensive per unit for joe oublic to be interested even at the present price.

You don't have to trade in multiples of bitcoins. Many of my trades were at 0.2 bitcoin and nothing to stop you trading lower if you want. Coinfloor is a good platform to use.

Never traded this but did buy $1k worth of bitcoin and 400 dollars of a handful of others. The other have halved since I bought while bitcoin is up, keeping me profitable. I don't know if its a good investment or not but at 1k of bitcoin I can afford to not really give a fk(Yes there are better investments out there).
The tech behind it is obviously very useful. But bitcoin itself, I don't know. Anyone can come up with their own currency using blockchain, the way I see it. However, I have never heard a bitcoin detractor who actually knew what bitcoin was.

The high price (as an investment), high trading/transaction fees (handful of brokers (?) and at times ill-liquidity prevented me from even having a small position. But, unlike the other cryptocurrencies Bitcoin has the benefit of 1st mover in the sector which is a distinct advantage over the others akin to ASOS the online leader in its sector.

At least I don't have to pay tax on the bitcoin if I ever sell it, unlike stocks. The transaction fees were negligible really, I think in my case they were below 0.25%
