Gary Lineker, one of the BBC's highest paid presenters, has called for the TV licence fee to be voluntary.

In an interview with The Guardian, the former footballer and Match of the Day presenter said the annual charge was the BBC's "fundamental problem".

"You're forced to pay it if you want a TV, and therefore it's a tax," he is quoted as saying. "The public pay our salaries, so everyone is a target."

- An untenable position surely??

He made enough from them already (already took a pay cut this year I believe), and is getting plenty elsewhere. No problem him jumping on the bandwagon now, no matter how right he is. Interesting we haven't consistently heard these views from him.

Refreshingly honest coming from a BBC employee.

Not like John Humphrys who now writes for the Daily Mail.

He towed the BBC line for decades, and waited until he hadn't got a job with them before he started his new career slagging them off.

there must be a ulterior motive him coming out with this, probably going over to BT sport "full time" for even more than the near 2 million salary he picks up from the BBC.

what does he actually do for the big bucks, present a out dated football show for a hour.

perhaps they have threatened him with covering the womens game.

If he is sticking his neck out for a principle before his own interests he'll be the first one.

I think it is obscene that he earns millions for not much.  I nearly always prefer the guest pundits to him, unless they are female Cry

I hope so. He possesses too little talent to warrant his mega salary for doing something another person could do with aplomb.

Would easily make it on to the list of the most overpaid in the history of television.

If the BBC really wants to save money they should start by giving him the boot and take the likes of Graham Norton with him.

when you think about it, it's staggering how the bbc have got into this situation with presenter salaries,

I'd imagine for every Gary Lineker there are a dozen mid ranking executives on £100k + salaries.

Seems the news department has taken a good kicking in the last few days.

Even heard a BBC top exec saying the 450 jobs lost should not make a lot of difference!!!

So they sack  450 full time BBC staff, but  not BT’s Lineker??

Alan Hansen pays penalty of £1/2m BBC pay cut
FOOTBALL pundit Alan Hansen is to have his salary slashed by £500,000 as part of the BBC’s austerity drive.

Match Of The Day regular Alan Hansen is in talks with the BBC over a new contract.

The long-serving regular on Match Of The Day is in talks with the Corporation over a new contract.

The former Liverpool defender, has come under fire for his vast wage of around £1.5million a year – all funded by the licence fee payer.

His contract is up at the end of this season and BBC insiders say he will take a “considerable” reduction under the terms of his new deal.

It is understood other Match Of The Day stalwarts Gary Lineker and Mark Lawrenson will also be asked to take cuts when their deals end.

Hansen, 56, who won 26 Scotland caps and three European Cups with Liverpool, started broadcasting after he retired in 1991.

He has been on Match Of The Day since 1992 but landed himself in controversy in December when calling black players “coloured”.

Alan Hansen has been on Match Of The Day since 1992 but landed himself in controversy in December when calling black players “coloured”.

A BBC spokeswoman said: “We never discuss talent pay or talent negotiation.”

But an insider said: “Alan is no different from other stars. Graham Norton and Bruce Forsyth, who have had to stomach big salary cuts. Alan didn’t complain and we expect him to sign up shortly.”

The BBC has been under pressure to slash the vast sums it pays to “talent” and its top executives.

Director general Mark Thompson is paid £779,000 a year while Norton and Lineker receive about £2million a year. Weakest Link presenter Anne Robinson and Newsnight host Jeremy Paxman each get £1million.

The BBC’s accounts for last year showed it paid £22million to 19 stars earning more than £500,000.

the circulation figures for the guardian will go down - although actually come to think of it  - they probably deliver them in bulk to the bbc

they look in it to find the next lot of news and ideas to broadcast to you
