n hindsight clearly this man should have been detained somewhere.

The death penalty for *attempted* but not actual murder?And this chap was in the mental health system his whole life. It is not a cunning wheeze his defence lawyers thought of last week.
so the fact this kid has survived and can open a hand now means its not as bad a crime on a moral level but if he suddenly dies the culprit transforms into a more evil character instantly?

I know of people in the mental health system who have threatened suicideA fair proportion of them have done it sadly...so people are not always bluffing.
BTW what exactly is " the mental health system " ? I remember 20 years ago being on anti depressants for a short time, realised they were poison and stopped taking them. If I went out and hacked the postmans head off with a rusty breadknife could I claim immunity from prosecution or mercy because I have apparently " been in the system".

When Mr Bravery is released , and he will be ,He may be looking for Lodgings ,We cannot have this poor chap ending up in a halfway house .. Shirley someone on here will put their name forward to help him out .. I only hope you are not living in a tower block .
Its strange how these liberals all go into hiding when it comes to putting their names forward to help this poor "child" but are all too quick to say he needs help in the comfort of their warm living rooms on twitter etc

I don't think anyone has suggested it has been a bed of roses for the child, his mother or family.However, since the perpetrator had six mental health care workers, it is probably safe to assume a pre-existing condition, unless you think he has been faking it since birth for just this moment.@wolf3011 -- so the fact this kid has survived and can open a hand now means its not as bad a crime on a moral level but if he suddenly dies the culprit transforms into a more evil character instantly?No but it is the difference between murder and not-murder. That is how it works. It is the same with knife crime, where a lot of people now survive who would have died in earlier times because of better medical care and the skill of surgeons.
It is how it works but it seems very strange that someones punishment can hinge on the skill of a surgeon etc rather than their intent to kill

We can't hang him because (1) we do not have capital punishment, and (2) even when we did, it was for murder and this chap has not murdered anyone.The Nazis did kill mentally defective people but I should like to think we are morally superior to Hitler, at least.
All killers or the vast majority are " mentally defective " so to liken anyone wanting capital punishment for them to hitler is the type of hysterical ranting rubbish Id expect to see from someone on twitter with a GO Corbyn logo under their name.

@wolf3011 -- he is not a killer.
Only by luck, he's a killer by intent and effectively this lad is close to being paralysed with no quality of life.

This man may have been the most evil man of all time....but that is not the pointHe was diagnosed with Autism which means he is not quite like the rest of us, he is not quite saneThis man tells people he has an impulse to push people off heights, which is a very dangerous thing to doSo this man was dangerous, so I cannot see how this man was ever allowed out on his own myself????????????????????I think society should have been protected from this man and he needed protecting from himself
what does " he is not quite like the rest of us " mean. We are all different on a sliding scale of aggression levels and this sort of comment trying to pigeon hole people in boxes of sane /insane is ridiculous. Who diagnosed him and so what ? There are millions of autistic people in the world - how many of them behave like this? As you have clearly never heard of the Rosenhan experiment here is a very brief summary of it - it highlights the flaws in these so called experts attempting to traverse the minefield of mental health illustrating why no two "experts " ever agree on anything. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosenhan_experiment
Even if one was to accept your argument of the condition being to blame rather than the person which is nonsense, the end result is he can never be cured or let out in public unsupervised so it's either a life sentence or the death penalty. Maybe he would favour the latter contrary to the former- the reality is he will be out after maybe a decade roaming around again

The concept of insanity in English law dates from 1324, not something that was thought up yesterday
WHy you are quoting laws from the 14th century to vindicate what's sane/insane when in the 14 th century you could be burnt as a witch for having black hair or put to death for stealing a sheep I've absolutely no idea
